SLBI herbarium specimen: Eyrngium maritimum

Eyrngium maritimum (Family: Apiaceae)

From the SLBI herbarium.

Eryngium maritimum is often found on European coasts, including Britain, from Scandanavia to the Mediterranean and Baltic, and Black Sea. However, it can grow as a garden plant. It produces a basal rosette, from which grow flowering spikes with stiffly spiny foliage and stems. The flowers are hermaphrodite and are pollinated by bees, flies and beetles. The plant is self-fertile.
