Hydnoid species
These species have a very characteristic fertile surface covered in small spines, but they do not form a homogeneous group. Among these fungi are species closely attached to the woody host on which they are decomposing, while others form lateral brackets and otheres are even terrestrial species with a cap and stipe living symbiotically with higher plants.

Polyporoid species
Unlike the boletes, which also have a tubular-poroid fertile surface, polypores in the broad sense usually have a leathery or even woody consistency. Confusion only occurs with those polypores that have a cap and stipe, but the vast majority of species in this group have a more simple body shape; sometimes they remain totally attached to the substrate but may perhaps form small lateral brackets or grow into a hoof shape in a position perpendicular to the woody host.
