[French] Carpenter Ant / (Camponotus aethiops)

Carpenter Ant drinking from a dew drop from a handrail. This is a 7-image focus stack and whilst I tried to get more of this magnificent beast in focus with more shots, they don't hang around long enough. As long as you focus on the head end first!

This was a first for me, a Chalkhill Blue butterfly on a sunny hillside close to the Needles at the tip of the Isle of Wight, taken last summer. There were thousands of them !!

Common during a hot afternoon. This species has rapidly become established across the lower part of Michigan. Nests may be found in almost any protected situation, even wheel wells of vehicles. There is some indication that this species has outcompeted our native Polistes in suburban habitats.

The dormant season is fast approaching here but some of the summer flowers are still blooming. Fortunately we do have flowers throughout the winter season so the hummingbirds are year-round residents. Their backup for food are my 3 feeders around the patio.

A hummingbird at my feeder today.

There is quite a bit of activity at the backyard butterfly bushes lately, as many species of bees, butterflies, and other insects stop by to drink the sweet nectar. This is a Snowberry Clearwing moth sipping nectar from a butterfly bush flower. The black legs indicate that this is a Snowberry Clearwing rather than the very similar Hummingbird Clearwing.
