Greymouth, our lunch brake. Day one of our four day trip away over Arthur's Pass and back through the Lewis Pass. February 8, 2012. South Island, New Zealand.

Greymouth is the largest town in the West Coast region in the South Island of New Zealand.

The town is located at the mouth of the Grey River, on a narrow coastal plain close to the foot of the Southern Alps. In clear weather, Aoraki/Mount Cook can be clearly seen to the south from near the town.

Māori had lived in Greymouth for considerable time before European settlement, and called the area Mawhera (for 'wide spread river mouth', still an alternative name for the Grey River). The first European to visit the site of what is now Greymouth was Thomas Brunner in 1846. Brunner discovered coal in the Grey valley, and several places in the region (notably the town of Brunner and Lake Brunner) bear his name. Brunner himself named the Grey River after prominent 19th century New Zealand politician Sir George Grey. Together with gold, coal mining was a major impetus in the town's early European history.

On 19 November 2010, there was an explosion at the Pike River Mine, trapping 29 miners. Attempts to rescue the trapped miners were repeatedly delayed due to high levels of methane gas until a second explosion on the 24th November was believed to dash all hope of survival for the miners.

Since the dismantling work of old track was still under way, I had to take this photo through a fence. That is the slanted defocused object.

Since a fair number of my contacts have and like cats, I thought it was time to take a few pics of mine. Jake was a friend's cat who I agreed to look after for 6 months last year, but who ended up staying with me permanently.

since I have a bigger boy (11) I needed to make something wearable for an older child that didn't look homemade at all.

I made the jeans from scratch with my own pattern, I over-dyed them a grey color so that the fraying wouldn't be stark white. I put a few bleach spots and some grey paint spots on the legs too to increase the grunge factor. when everything was finished, I took a dremmel tool with a sanding rum, and sanded back the edges a little, so they would look more like store bought jeans. As per my son's request, these jeans are fully lined in charcoal flannel so they are warmer for winter.

The vest is made from a wool plaid, and is also my own pattern.

The shirt is made from a rayon jersey, with an appliqued tie, also my own pattern.

Matching was one of the earliest churches I visited for Flickr in 2006 and since then I've had a lot more practice. Matching was long overdue for a revisit and I managed it during wildly variable weather - cold rain and hail alternating with bright warm sunshine.

The church of St Mary The Virgin, Matching, stands on a green in the centre of the parish, close to Matching Hall. It comprises a chancel with north organ chamber and vestry, south chapel, nave with north and south aisles, south porch, and west tower. The walls are of flint rubble with stone dressings; the porch is of brick and timber.

www.flickr.com/photos/barryslemmings/sets/72157629437584408/ to see the full set.

A church probably existed around 1150, when Hugh, dean of Matching, is recorded. Vicars are recorded from 1274, but the list is far from complete until 1368. Before the 17th century incumbencies were short. Between 1433 and 1553 there were at least 15 vicars, of whom 12 or more left by resignation. In the neighbouring parish of Hatfield Broad Oak, where the vicar's income was similar, there were only five vicars between 1423 and 1548, all of whom died in office. That suggests that it was not merely the poverty of the living that made Matching unattractive. Possibly the isolation of the parish was a more important factor. In the 15th and 16th centuries several vicars were pluralists. Robert Horne, vicar 1546–53, held Matching with a London rectory and the deanery of Durham. He was later bishop of Winchester.

A 12th century chancel remained until 1873, but the nave was rebuilt, with three-bay aisles, early in the 13th century. The south aisle was widened in the later 14th century, and the central window and south doorway, partly restored, survive from that period. In the 15th century a plain square tower of three stages and the south porch, of which an original tiebeam remains, were added. The church was renovated in 1730 and again in 1770, when the roof was repaired and ceiled.

The church was restored and enlarged in 1875 to designs by Sir Arthur Blomfield, at the cost of Sir Henry Selwin-Ibbetson. The nave was extended one bay eastwards, the north aisle, chancel, and south porch were rebuilt, and the north organ chamber and vestry and the south chapel were added. The roof timbers were renewed, but three 14th century corbels remain in the south aisle.

The church has six bells, the oldest of which date from 1615 and 1640; two others, of circa 1500, were recast in 1875. The font, which dates from the 15th century, has an octagonal bowl with shields of arms. The octagonal carved and pannelled pulpit was given in 1624 by Richard Glascock of Down Hall. The canopy was removed in 1875. Few monuments survived the 1875 restoration.

The Marriage Feast room, immediately west of the church, was built, probably in the later 15th century, for the entertainment of poor people on their wedding day. It was used as an almshouse in the 18th century, and as a school in the early 19th century. The building was restored in 1897 and was later used as a church hall. It is of two storeys, timber-framed and plastered. The main room, which occupies the whole of the upper floor, has a crown post roof of four bays. It is approached from the outside by an integral staircase in the north-west corner. The ground floor originally had one dividing wall but was later made into several smaller rooms.

Since we've been living at Mum and Dad's, Innocent have been giving out alphabet magnets in their kids smoothie packets. We get through the packs at a ridiculous rate - mainly because they are one of the few forms of fruit that allergic Abi can tolerate. Frustratingly we seemed to be accumulating dozens of some letters, whilst the last couple remained elusive. Yesterday Abi took some swapsies into school to barter with the dinner ladies, and came back with the 'm' and 'x' we needed to complete our set.

I had to re-take this photo as I'd initially thought the fox 'jumped' and only realised as I was putting the letters back that we hadn't got an 's' in the sentence. Doh.

Since there is no boardwalk, I was worried there would be nothing to do. I could not have been more wrong. There were so many shops, eateries, parks, flowers, and things to see. I became fascinated with the architecture and photographed every house in a 5 mile radius. On the beach, there was a roaming gang of giant seagulls that loot from people's bags. Also visited other parts of the Cape, which will be in separate albums as this one will already be insanely large.

My 2013 Classic Jasmine 12'' Doll has been completely deboxed. She is standing, supported by a Kaiser doll stand (not included with the doll), and is photographed from various angles. Here the low sun is casting a long shadow of Jasmine, ending in her silhouette.

The 2013 Classic Jasmine doll has many differences from the 2012 model, and yet looks very similar. She is now more movie accurate and overall a more attractive doll. The only major change is to her legs, from fully articulated hard plastic legs to rubber legs with internal knee joints and fixed angled feet. But since her outfit covers her legs almost entirely, these changes are not immediately noticeable. There are minor changes to her outfit and accessories, the biggest changes being the return of her triangular earrings, the removal of her overskirt, and the introduction of a pattern in the glitter of her outfit. The features that haven't changed are her head, face, hair, skin color, shoes, torso and arms.

Following is a detailed comparative review of the 2013 Classic Jasmine Doll versus the 2012 Classic Jasmine doll. The review is divided in various physical categories.

Head and Face: The 2012 and 2013 Classic Jasmine dolls have identical heads and almost identical faces. She is large almond shaped brown eyes that are glancing to her upper right. She has silver and pink eyeshadow, and thick black eyeliner with two short thick black eyelashes over the corner of each eye. There are thick black eyebrows that are arched at the ends. She has a small straight nose. She has a closed mouth smile with full pink lips. Her cheeks are lightly blushed with pink rouge. She has pronounced cheekbones, and a large protruding forehead. Overall, she is very movie accurate, except for her high forehead.

There are three small differences in their faces, that may be due to factory variances. One is that the new Jasmine's face is a little less shiny, although that may be due to my washing with alcohol to clean off some blemishes. Another difference that the new Jasmine has slightly darker and fainter pink upper eyeshadow. Finally she has slightly darker pink lips.

Hair: The 2013 Classic Jasmine doll has the same hair as the previous model. It is jet black, long and mostly straight. It is formed into a long ponytail that hangs almost to her knees, and tied at two points with black rubberbands. It is parted in the middle, and pulled away from her forehead without the use of any hair product, so it is soft and smooth throughout. The ends of the ponytail is curled and a little messy. I tried to make it neater by combing it, but wasn't very successful. The hairdo is fairly movie accurate, but should come down over her forehead a lot more, and should be tied with blue bands rather than black ones.

Outfit: The 2013 Classic Jasmine doll's outfit is very similar to the old one, with some significant differences. Her teal satin top is now slightly bluer, is scalloped at the top and bottom, has a design covered in silver glitter, and has a purple gem at the top. It still has off the shoulder straps. The pants bottom is made of the same material, with the same silver glittery pattern. The waistline is still V-shaped, but is now more modest. It is only about 1/4 inch higher than before, but no longer shows her belly button. The waist can be pulled down a bit, but will still just barely show her belly button. Ariel's costume also had a similar change this year, in that her bellybutton now barely shows above the waist of her tail, and can be covered up by pulling up the tail a bit. A fairly big change was the removal of the sheer organza overskirt and the large teal gem at the waist. I don't miss those so much, since they are not in the costume of the movie character.

Shoes: They have identical light blue green flat shoes with a curved toes. It is very movie accurate, but looks a lot better on the flat feet of the 2012 doll, rather on the angled feet of the 2013 doll.

Accessories: The 2013 Classic Jasmine doll has large solid triangular earrings of shiny gold, and a hoop necklace of the same material. They are great looking and very movie accurate, and a significant improvement over the older doll's jewelry. The 2012 doll had hoop earrings with three small spheres inside, and a hoop necklace, all of which were a flat gold color. They have the same light teal satin headbands, but the 2013 doll is now missing the large blue green gem, so is less movie accurate in that regard.

Body: Her body is fully articulated in the arms, but now has the rubber legs of 2011 and earlier dolls, which has internal knee joints and fixed angled feet. Her hip joints allow her to sit down with her legs together and her back straight up, unlike the 2012 doll with the fully articulated but defective legs. But her knees can only bend about 40 degrees, so her legs stick out when she is sitting. The leg joints are also much stiffer, so she is in a much more natural position when placed standing in a Kaiser doll stand. Her angled rubber feet also make her about 1/4 inch taller than the 2012 doll, who had flat feet.

Packaging: The packaging for the dolls is much improved. The box art has been completely redesigned, with beautiful decorations unique to each Princess (actually for each movie), and a cameo of the animated movie character. The boxes are the same height and width (13'' H x 6'' W), but are 1/2'' flatter, making them smaller and lighter. Jasmine's new box has images of Aladdin's Lamp and the Royal Palace in a purple background.

Since we get the Absynthia and Ave ready with finished stylizations, we forgot a little bit about the Etiude... At the weekend we decided to change it and we sewn her a dress set, which we planned for her since a long time. Sadly last sunday was rainy and windy, so we were not able to took her outside for some pictures. Today when we opened our eyes, we saw a miraculous view - first early spring sun! We've done everything to go out from work earlier and catch up the light! So here it is...

Taco Sal has been on the corner of Eubank and Menaul for as long as I can remember. Their New Mexican food is homemade right down to the fresh pinto beans made daily to their hot New Mexico green chile and they have the most delicious sopapillas. Yum-0.

Since launching in 2012, the Medical Radiography program at Camosun College has graduated about 135 students from nine cohorts, with two more in the wings.

Since 1981, I have seen this Perkins location through at least six remodels, I believe.

When I was a college boy, the lights over the tables were cylindrical affairs, about 24-30 inches tall, imbedded with all sorts of wonderful red, orange, and gold glass bits. Ha!

If you had told me then that Santa Fe Ave would one day be less the center of commerce than at that time, I'd have scoffed. But newer centers of commerce, a reduction in cruising by young people, (economy, maybe? Play Station2 maybe?) have made changes. This Perkins is not open 24-7 anymore, just weekends.

Since I haven't been able to scrap in the past 2 days (celebrations galore), I've decided to kill 2 birds and post this layout for both day 7 (doodling around the green title letters) and day 9 (list journaling). Hoping I have a chance to scrap later this week (or at least next weekend). The good news is I have a weekend getaway to scrap on the 22nd, so at least I hope to catch up!

Since 2008, when rapid increases in the prices for major grains helped to trigger outbreaks of civil unrest in more than 40 countries, scholars and policymakers have paid increased attention to the potential influence of global food prices on social and political instability. Compelling and provocative headlines have suggested that there is a direct relationship between food insecurity and conflict. However, we know from a conflict perspective that the story is always more complicated than those claims often imply. How does conflict affect food insecurity? How does food insecurity contribute to conflict? And how can development organizations effectively address both? Harvesting Peace: Food Security, Conflict, and Cooperation – the latest edition of ECSP Report – explores these complex linkages, drawing insights from scholarly work to help inform more effective programming for practitioners. Report author Emmy Simmons presents with commentary by Susan Bradley, Henk-Jan Brinkman, and Edward Carr.
