Hello darkness my old friend - I've come to talk with you again.

Sleepless nights. Restless days. Love, support and caring. Decisions. Waiting.

Our Daily Challenge - Fear

---fear of aging----

OLD FRIENDS - by Simon & Garfunkel (who will both be 70 this year)

Old friends,

Old friends,

Sat on their park bench

Like bookends.

A newspaper blown through the grass

Falls on the 'round toes

On the high shoes

Of the old friends.

Old friends.

Winter companions,

The old men

Lost in their overcoats,

Waiting for the sunset.

The sounds of the city,

Sifting through trees,

Settle like dust

On the shoulders

Of the old friends

Can you imagine us

Years from today,

Sharing a park bench quietly?

How terribly strange

To be seventy.

Old friends,

Memory brushes the same years,

Silently sharing the same fear.

Time it was and what a

time it was it was

A time of innocence

A time of confidences

Long ago it must be

I have a photograph

Preserve your memories

They're all that's left you

This weeks theme is about the changing season, the trees are glorious for a moment, and I love those dazzling colors! The front tree is a Black Walnut, I believe, and I liked the way it looked with the background of bright leaves.

Here is a song about the changing of the seasons, something I remember from my past...it has such a beautiful and nostalgic feeling....

Leaves that are Green: by Simon and Garfunkel

I was twenty-one years when I wrote this song.

Im twenty-two now but I wont be for long

Time hurries on.

And the leaves that are green turn to brown,

And they wither with the wind,

And they crumble in your hand.

Once my heart was filled with the love of a girl.

I held her close, but she faded in the night

Like a poem I meant to write.

And the leaves that are green turn to brown,

Theme: Seasons

During the Ayutthaya period, fighters began using unrefined hemp wrappings to protect their fingers and wrists in the same way that fighters today use tape. There are legends that some ancient warriors even dipped their hand wrappings in glue and then ground glass before competing

In the clearing stands a boxer and a fighter by his trade,

And he carries the reminders of every glove that laid him down,

Or cut him ’til he cried out in his anger and his shame,

I am leaving, I am leaving.

But the fighter still remains....................

"The Sound of Silence"

" Bridge over Troubled Water " was the fifth and final studio album by American folk rock duo Simon & Garfunkel, released in January 1970 on Columbia Records. The album includes two of the duo's most critically and commercially acclaimed songs, "Bridge over Troubled Water" and "The Boxer", which were listed on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Other particular favourites of mine on the album are " Cecilia " and " El Condor Pasa " .

Old friends, old friends sat on their parkbench like bookends

A newspaper blowin' through the grass

Falls on the round toes of the high shoes of the old friends

Old friends, winter companions, the old men

Lost in their overcoats, waiting for the sun

The sounds of the city sifting through trees

Settles like dust on the shoulders of the old friends

Can you imagine us years from today, sharing a parkbench quietly

How terribly strange to be seventy

Old friends, memory brushes the same years, silently sharing the same fears

-Simon and Garfunkel

Went to the local Kings Theatre for another amateur dramatics production last night, this time the Phoenix Players in "The Graduate".

And yes, there was nudity!

The crown in the above diptych is over the stage of this little gem of a theatre tucked away in a back street of Gloucester.

An ode to Simon and Garfunkel. This is the now demolished Kronk Community Center where some famous boxers used to train.

This is what I love.

the folks of this town and the farms around. Once the shelves were well stocked with their needs. Storekeepers looked out the big glass to see all the comings and goings. Neighbors lingered on the sidewalk under the deep awning to share a bit of news or gossip. There was a day when this street was full of life and a hopeful future . . . but that image is fading fast. They couldn't have imagined this - and we can't figure out a way to stop it.

In the middle of this silent, empty street, songs come to mind. This time it was that simple poignant bit from Simon and Garfunkel. Remember Bookends?

Time it was, and what a time it was. It was . . .

A time of innocence,

A time of confidences.

Long ago, it must be,

I have a photograph.

Preserve your memories,

They're all that's left you.

For I know with the first light of dawn

I'll be leaving,

And tonight will be

All I have left to recall.

Leafy......

Simon And Garfunkel › Bridge Over Troubled Water

When youre weary, feeling small,

When tears are in your eyes, I will dry them all;

Im on your side. when times get rough

And friends just cant be found,

Like a bridge over troubled water

I will lay me down.

Like a bridge over troubled water

I will lay me down.

When youre down and out,

When youre on the street,

When evening falls so hard

I will comfort you.

Ill take your part.

When darkness comes

And pains is all around,

Like a bridge over troubled water

I will lay me down.

Like a bridge over troubled water

I will lay me down.

Sail on silvergirl,

Sail on by.

Your time has come to shine.

All your dreams are on their way.

See how they shine.

If you need a friend

Im sailing right behind.

Like a bridge over troubled water

I will ease your mind.

Like a bridge over troubled water

I will ease your mind.

Tested out an old favorite film in the Petri. This multi-iso film is a dream and I'm sorry it's no longer made.

Mixed a splatter painting with a record player at a party. Sadly, it was bumping Simon and Garfunkel. Look how that red pops!

let us be lovers we'll marry our fortunes together

i've got some real estate here in my bag

so we bought a pack of cigarettes and mrs. wagner pies

and we walked off to look for america

"kathy," i said as we boarded a greyhound in pittsburgh

"michigan seems like a dream to me now"

it took me four days to hitchhike from saginaw

i've gone to look for america

laughing on the bus

playing games with the faces

she said the man in the gabardine suit was a spy

i said "be careful his bowtie is really a camera"

toss me a cigarette, i think there's one in my raincoat

we smoked the last one an hour ago

so i looked at the scenery, she read her magazine

and the moon rose over an open field

"kathy, i'm lost," i said, though i knew she was sleeping

i'm empty and aching and i don't know why

Humming Simon and Garfunkel's Scarborough Fair

The Series 1 Spider is known by the nickname of "Osso di Seppia" - Italian for "cuttlefish bone".

This particular car was the model featured in the 1967 movie The Graduate, driven by Ben, the character played by Dustin Hoffman.

The Alfa Romeo Spider (105/115 series) is a roadster produced in four series (‘Duetto’, ‘Fastback’, ‘Aerodinamica’ and ‘Nuovo’ over 120’000 units in total) from 1966 to 1993.

Widely regarded as a design classic, it remained in production for almost three decades with only minor aesthetic and mechanical changes.

The three first series were assembled by Pininfarina in Grugliasco and the fourth series in San Giorgio Canavese. The last Spider was produced in April 1993, it was also the last rear wheel drive Alfa Romeo produced before Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione was introduced.

The first presentation of the ‘Serie 1’-Spider, as a prototype, was at the Turin Motor Show in 1961 (mass-production 1966 to 1969). However, the continuing success of existing models and the economic challenges facing Italy at the time meant that the first pre-launch production Spiders began to emerge from the Pininfarina production line only at the end of 1965.

Based on the Giulia 105 series chassis, the Spider was launched in the 36th Geneva Motor Show in March 1966. Unnamed at launch, the name "Duetto" was chosen in a write-in competition in Italy. Pininfarina was responsible for the design of the body; in fact, the Duetto was the last project with which founder Battista "Pinin" Farina was personally associated. Pininfarina were also responsible for the manufacture of the vehicle's monocoque construction (designed with the relatively new principles of crumple zones incorporated into the front and rear). The engine was a 1570 cc variant of the Alfa Romeo twin cam four cylinder engine, and produced 109 hp (81 kW). Sparsely fitted inside but including five speed manual transmission, disc brakes and independent front suspension, the price on launch in Italy was 2,195,000 lire.

The original "Duetto" was in production from 1966–1967; replaced in late 1967 by the 1750 Spider Veloce, powered by a 118 hp (88 kW) 1779 cc engine. In Europe this was fitted with two twin carburettors, whereas models for the North American market (from MY 1969) had SPICA (Società Pompe Iniezione Cassani & Affini) mechanical fuel injection. Modifications were also made to the suspension, brakes, electrics and wheels and tires though the car looked effectively the same. Visible differences were limited to the rear-view mirror repositioned to the door, and different badging on the tail. During the production run, the front repeater lights were moved ahead of the wheelarches. The car's official title was 1750 Spider Veloce, the name "Duetto" being dropped from this point on.

A new Spider 1300 Junior, with a 1290 cc engine producing 89 hp (66 kW), was introduced in 1968. This lacked various features of the 1750, including the plastic headlight fairings, the brake servo, hubcaps and opening quarterlight.

The mama pajama rolled out of bed

And she ran to the police station

When the papa found out he began to shout

And he started the investigation

It's against the law

It was against the law

What the mama saw

It was against the law

The mama looked down and spit on the ground

Every time my name gets mentioned

The papa said oy if I get that boy

I'm gonna stick him in the house of detention

Well I'm on my way

I don't know where I'm going

I'm on my way I'm taking my time

But I don't know where

Goodbye to Rosie the queen of Corona

Seeing me and Julio

Down by the schoolyard

See you, me and Julio

Down by the schoolyard

In a couple of days they come and

Take me away

But the press let the story leak

And when the radical priest

Come to get me released

We was all on the cover of Newsweek

And I'm on my way

I don't know where I'm going

I'm on my way I'm taking my time

But I don't know where

Goodbye to Rosie the queen of Corona

See you, me and Julio

Down by the schoolyard

See you, me and Julio

Cloudy

The sky is gray and white and cloudy,

Sometimes I think its hanging down on me.

And its a hitchhike a hundred miles.

Im a rag-a-muffin child.

Pointed finger-painted smile.

I left my shadow waiting down the road for me a while.

Cloudy

My thoughts are scattered and theyre cloudy,

They have no borders, no boundaries.

They echo and they swell

From tolstoy to tinker bell.

Down from berkeley to carmel.

Got some pictures in my pocket and a lot of time to kill.

Hey sunshine

I havent seen you in a long time.

Why dont you show your face and bend my mind?

These clouds stick to the sky

Like floating questions, why?

And they linger there to die.

They dont know where they are going, and, my friend, neither do I.

This weeks theme is any song that mentions the weather, so I've chosen "Cloudy" by Simon and Garfunkel, I've always loved that song, and it seems to fit this image, that I have been planning to post.

I saw this "hole punch" cloud (also called a fallstreak hole) on Dec 3, and have never seen anything like it in my life. I ran to get my camera, and I had to change the lens (I had the zoom on it) so this cloud formation actually had deteriorated a bit before I could shoot this...although I was able to get a few images before it faded away. I will post the wikipedia link, that gives a scientific description of the cloud.

Sound Of Silence - Simon and Garfunkel

Hello darkness, my old friend

I've come to talk with you again

Because a vision softly creeping

Left its seeds while I was sleeping

And the vision that was planted in my brain

Still remains

Within the sound of silence

In restless dreams I walked alone

Narrow streets of cobblestone

'Neath the halo of a street lamp

I turned my collar to the cold and damp

When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light

That split the night

And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw

Ten thousand people, maybe more

People talking without speaking

People hearing without listening

People writing songs that voices never share

And no one dared

Disturb the sound of silence

"Fools", said I, "You do not know

Silence like a cancer grows

Hear my words that I might teach you

Take my arms that I might reach you"

But my words, like silent raindrops fell

And echoed In the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed

To the neon god they made

And the sign flashed out its warning

In the words that it was forming

And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written

on the subway walls And tenement halls"

And whispered in the sounds of silence

I dont know about anybody else but im pretty fed up of the snow and cold conditions now, i want spring to show it self. For those in the UK who have forgotten what spring looks like, it looks like the photo above, taken last April somewhere in Yorkshire, hopefully a scene we will all see very soon.

I got the title for this photo from an old Simon and Garfunkel song www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITXBjDTXS90 its well worth a listen, not one of there more well known songs but a little gem in my opinion.

One of my faraway friends has gotten into some trouble lately. This is for you. Stay strong. Things will be better one day.

And this is just a song about friendship and support, well, any of my friends will appreciate this too!

The biggest success was still yet to come.

My favs are 59th Street Bridge Song (Feeling Groovy) and - of course - Homeward Bound.
