Two year ago, I did my first attempt to capture the famous Perseid Meteor Shower events during August. Unfortunately, at that time the entire Washington State was covered with smoke from wild fires and the viewing conditions for meteor shower wasn't great. Last year the Perseid Meteor shower happened to be in the same time as full moon, which wasn't ideal either. This year, chances finally come for me to try again.
The meteor shower peaked on last Tuesday night, but cloud coverage was too high so I had to wait until Wednesday night which had very clear sky. I went to Mt.Rainer National Park after work and came to this famous Reflection Lake. As night fell, I could start to see meteors every now and then, and several of them were really bright and lasted almost an entire second. WOW, what an amazing night to see Mt.Rainier with perseid meteors on the sky!

Someone mentioned that I could see up to 200 meteors per hour. I certainly saw many of them last night.
While I was waiting for them I thought that this might be a fun exercise to play around with in Photoshop. It felt appropriate. I copied 25 images and zoomed in on each one of them. Then I used the Multiply Filter and added the sky back to a signal original image. Enjoy!
Shower Cave Falls in the Meander Valley. A sometimes difficult, three hour return hike but well worth the effort!
The metadata is slightly off due to the fact that I blended two photographs...... there was also a longer exposure image used for the water.
Keep an eye (and lens) out for the Perseid meteor shower this weekend. This is one of the most reliable displays of shooting stars - with 70 meteors per hour visible under dark skies far from the city light pollution.

This shot is from the same evening as the rainbow I posted a few days ago. This is the true color of the sky from that sunset. I did not process this photo in any other way except to sharpen it. It was pouring rain, the sun was shining brightly and there was a massive rainbow behind me.
Jane started doing this thing where she gets into the sink and instead of just drinking the water she lets it roll off her back. She then drinks the water from her side. I do not know what advantage this has for her but it leads to her taking a lot of baths and thus a softer coat. We call this her "shower time" as she really likes to get a drink this way when one of us is in the shower.

Perseid Meteor Shower at Trillium Lake Friday morning, August 13, 2010.
I took 360, 30 second exposures to get this one shot. This is an aggregate of the meteors that fell in three hours last night.
Exposure - 30 seconds x 360 exposures
Aperture - f/2.8
Focal Length - 11 mm
ISO Speed - 2000
Basically - This shot was created by taking 360 exposures and then taking the shots that had meteor's in them out and layering them over each other and masking and merging them into the lower layer. I did each layer one at a time.
This shot did not take into consideration the rotation of Earth during the three hours that I was shooting, thus the lack of a common point of origin. I have since compensated using a time/rotation adjustment and recompiled the layers into this image HERE.
This work was published in the Flickr Blog. Thank you.
Because I drank until the middle of the night on that day, the last train disappeared. I took the taxi of the large van for the first time, but do not remember ride comfort because I slept to my home.

I popped out last night to catch more Aurora shots but I missed the best of it. I still took a shot just to get the distant glow of lights in Aberdare and the last of the Auroral glow. When I hit the trigger, a shooting star from the Quadrantid Meteor Shower photobombed the image.
I won't complain.

Shoofly Plant (Nicandra physalodes) seed pod cages at sunset. This is the most fascinating plant - in the Solanaceae (Nightshade) family with beautiful purple flowers and fabulous seeds that seem to be suspended in intricately veined "cages."
My brother wrote a story to accompany this picture...it's just perfect! check it out here!
It's not too long and well worth the few minutes.

I just had a dream about a large apartment building. On some of the floors there were typical apartments with bathrooms included. On other floors there were only half-baths in the apartments and the showers were shared almost dorm-style. So here I'm trying to remember the room as close to the dream as possible. The feeling in the dream was one of community and every day life.
