DOUX – Clover Hairstyle

For today's theme, a Sulphur Crested Cockatoo showman. These photos are from my archive, I posted something similar ten years ago and very few people viewed them. I thought they were good at the time, so here they are for a second outing.

Sulphur Crested Cockatoos are wonderful, intelligent birds who should never be condemned to live in a cage. This bird knew it had an audience and obliged with a delightful performance in a public park. There were other shots, here I am sharing just four shots.

I should have waited for this show at the position of the previous photo, with the light reflected by the snow illuminating the ground, but I was a bit cold and went down and during the descent I had this show (that I had considered), therefore trying to stay in an area of the zone with a still fairly wide view.

It is difficult to best render similar contrasts and natural colors so powerful and saturated as to require a slight reduction in saturation during file processing, a difficult choice.

The strong contrast of both light and colors was not perfectly managed by the camera, while I should have used the tripod and decreased the shutter speed to better diffuse the light, therefore a better exposure that would have helped to contain noise and burned details.

I can say that it is a photo captured in the moment, without the appropriate equipment, but believe me that the show was truly unique.

Black-shouldered Kite

I was once with a non-birder who remarked about the Kite's ability ot fold its wings over its front.

I explained that they could rotate the head through 180º

Someone should be able to find the living God in Scripture—and this is His word—and then lead others to find him there, and all theology properly ends in contemplation and love and union with God—not ideas about Him and a set of rules about how to wear your hat. The Mass is the center of everything and in so far as it is Calvary it is the center of Scripture and the key to everything—history, everything. All the trouble going on now. (11.27.49 RJ 172)

Well, then I came across frogs, you could hear them from far away :-)

The forecast called for snow last night, so it was no surprise to see it arrive, falling gently and reaching the 3 inches (7 cm) or so predicted as I went to bed. "Amazing," said I, the cat nodding in agreement. Little did we expect that it would continue throughout the night depositing another 10 in. (25 cm). Perhaps they changed the forecast, but I had no way of knowing since the satellite dish is apparently horribly frightened by the slightest mention of weather, typically going into dysfunction mode at even the first drop of rain.

In any event, just when much of the snow had finally and rapidly begun to dissipate, a fresh layer now coats the landscape, heavy and wet with temps right at the freezing mark, providing what may be a final look at a winter wonderland which has admittedly worn a bit heavy this year. However, with temps heading into the 50s (10C) by the end of the week, it should quickly vanish, allowing appreciation of what is always a dramatic and beautiful scene.

Anyone who follows me here should know by now about 'The Tree at 83' and how special a spot it is to me. Alas when I drove up to the spot yesterday it was no more...just a stump remained with nary a branch left on the ground. I knew that day would eventually come as the old white birch had been dead for a while and was in danger of falling over either on a car in the parking lot or on to CSXT's mainline. So while I understand why it had to go, it still was a bit of a shock and I'm sure gonna miss it. But at least I did it right over the years as my favorite foreground "prop" for trains in all seasons.

But the stalwart granite milepost remains as it has for some 180 years and the scene is still picture perfect for morning eastbounds. So it is time to put the nearby, and very much alive, red maple to use and christen a new 'Tree at 83.' To that end I cleaned out all the low sprouts and branches and opened up the scene a little bit to use it as a frame. While I will miss the 'V' shaped trunk and natural framing of the birch I will learn to work with the successor.

Alright enough about trees, as for the train it is good old Springfield based local B740 rolling in behind a pair of GP40-2s with a large cut of interchange for the New England Central and Mass Central Railroads. This is MP 83 on modern day CSXT's Boston Subdivision, the one time Boston and Albany mainline.

Tranquility should be listed in dictionaries as a synonym for 'brook'. Never once have I felt distraught in the presence of a brook, even my life at times insisted on distraction and distress. A brook is nature's whisperer of wisdom—one simply listens. | Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, USA.

Perhaps I should call this "Moose in the Marsh"! It was an early morning occasion, along Moose-Wilson Road, near the village of Moose, Wy. Needless to say, this area is famous for its mooses, and a they tend to congregate near this marshy area in the early morning hours. Not that there are huge numbers of moose, but there are enough to attract loads of tourists, who line the roadside and come by in slowly moving vans to take photos.

... who else should caress the rough fur of the old fellow, than a tender, fluffy cloud and if not, then a sea of fog lies at his feet. When I see something like this, I kneel in awe. He has the elements, fiery sunsets, the air, the earth he stands on, crystal clear mountain lakes and roaring waterfalls. The eagle that circles him with its wings spread and claws rolled into a fist, and sometimes sits next to him on pastel dawn. Anyone who thinks mountains are alone should raise their hands now.

Thanks for take your time and look at my photo, much appreciated!

I should perhaps explain "Peedie" Peedie is a traditional Orkney word meaning small and in this particular setting it obviously means "Small Sea" so it would be fair to ask how this come to be?

The reason is the sea in Kirkwall originally went all the way up to the steps of St.Magnus Cathedral and over the centuries the sea was reclaimed by the people of Kirkwall leaving only a very small Sea which would have been created by the Geological feature of an 'AYRE' which is a bar of shingle or stones forming on a narrow spit of land from the shore.

Recent Archaeological excavations very nearby to the Cathedral unearthed old piers possibly used in the building of the Cathedral.

Kirkwall's name comes from the Norse 'Kirkjuvagr', meaning 'Church on the bay'

Their ability to locate mice in the paddock is more than luck.

They seem to know where the nests are and just wait in the air for movement below.

This is a young female bird that has recently paired up with another young male.

She was sitting on a branch preening, and suddenly spied movement on the grass in front of me and dropped to take the spoil.

Black-shouldered Kite

This young Kite is raising and lowering its tail to indicate, to another Kite in the area, that the territory is taken.

I'm not sure that Kites can glare, but if they could, it would look like this.

This is the pic I saw as I walked along the bund. I was sure curious Willie would photo-bomb, but the little Kite was in no hurry to move in the cold air.

There seems to be a fad on Flickr at the mo of capturing autumnal woodland paths so i thought i would have a crack.
