November 2016

the final frontier.

The last few days have been spent dealing with the polar vortex. Besides the frigid subzero temperatures, Sheboygan, Wisconsin has also had an amazing shelf ice buildup along its Lake Michigan shoreline. The result has created an otherworldly landscape that have drawn photographers to capture this temporary condition. Some have practiced extreme photography, scaling these ice configurations for that perfect shot, but also putting themselves and first responders in potential life-threatening danger. I have to admit that years in the past I did so myself.

The middle of the three posts today is a drawing that illustrates why shelf ice exploration is dangerous. A friend originally posted it and asked others to share it as a preventative measure. I am doing this and hope that it is helpful.

This used to be a CD shelf - but who owns too many CDs anymore? Well, my sister does, so that's why I've kept some of them there! :D

Finally, 8 minutes after: www.flickr.com/photos/79387036@N07/48223856006/in/photost..., the sun broke through to provide this dramatic contrast. Events would turn even wilder in just a few minutes as another severe thunderstorm formed just 3 miles to my north. This was captured in the following time lapse: www.flickr.com/photos/79387036@N07/48218505232/in/photost....

I couldn't help but take a pic of my new boy on the shelf with his big bros! He is so cute!

I will take a proper comparison pic soon of them stand side by side.

The Copernicus Sentinel-3A satellite takes us over the Antarctic Peninsula and the adjacent Larsen Ice Shelf, from which a massive iceberg broke off in July.

The image has been manipulated, so clouds appear pink while snow and ice are blue to help us differentiate between them. The only land clearly visible is the tip of the Peninsula in the upper left, while sea ice covers the Weddell Sea to the right.

Captured on 25 September, the image shows the iceberg near the centre. The A68 berg had been jostling back and forth against the ice shelf, but more recent satellite imagery revealed that the gap between the berg and the shelf is widening – possibly drifting out to sea.

An iceberg’s progress is difficult to predict. It may remain in the area for decades, but if it breaks up, parts may drift north into warmer waters. Since the ice shelf is already floating, this giant iceberg does not influence sea level.

A68 is about twice the size of Luxembourg and with its calving has changed the outline of the Antarctic Peninsula forever – about 10% of the area of the Larsen C Ice Shelf has been removed.

The loss of such a large piece is of interest because ice shelves along the peninsula play an important role in ‘buttressing’ glaciers that feed ice seawards, effectively slowing their flow.

Previous events further north on the Larsen A and B shelves, captured by ESA’s ERS and Envisat satellites, indicate the flow of glaciers behind can accelerate when a large portion of an ice shelf is lost, contributing to sea-level rise.

In May/June 2024 I went storm chasing for the third time. If you'd like, you can read about my trip in the blog post on my website.

You can see all my storm chasing images from my 2017, 2018 and 2024 chases in this album.

A beautiful winter sunset on The Shelf at Kimmeridge Bay. I love how the sunlight reflects along the sea, leading towards me on the super slippery rocks! I am having coast withdrawal symptoms at the minute. I think a trip to Dorset is on the cards very soon.

I decided that my tiny Picco Neemo girls needed another shelf, so I put together this mid-century modern inspired shelf It's basically 1/12 scale like my girls.. It's still a WIP, I have to figure out how to smooth out the brick walls, add some wall art & assorted decorative items, & most important, figure out what to do about couch cushions. I don't really sew, so actually making tiny cushions is beyond me. I'm thinking that maybe I'll try covering the wood pieces that are the "cushions" it comes with, with fabric. That may be enough.

When I took this shot with my drone, it felt like the sky had decided to put on a little spectacle for us - no ticket required! The storm cell on the horizon looked like it wanted to swallow up the landscape, while the sun was still desperately casting a last light on the fields. A real eye-catcher, showing that Mother Nature loves a bit of drama. I'm dry, and the drone stayed intact - at least long enough to capture the moment!

My final image for this group this year!

Thunderstorm rolling through the Inn Valley

A shelf cloud passes over a farm and wheat fields east of the town of Wheatley in Chatham-Kent. This was the 3rd storm in a line of severe storms that passed through the region this day and caused some downburst damage in the area.

When I was a bit younger, I remember watching Pantene commercials where models would grow their hair long enough to become make-shift scarves and I thought that was really cool! Clearly I still have a long way to go, but there's still a lot of time til winter so .. :D

Anyways I've edited this maybe 200000000 times and I can't please myself with the tones so I think I'm just going to leave it at this state.

Hope you're all having a nice summer !! :)

Storm system headed my way

Top shelf: Argus C3 rangefinder (made in MI, USA), Kodak Jiffy 620 (my Dad's HS graduation gift), Bell & Howell Filmo Sportster 8mm motion picture camera.

(I got tired of seeing all the vintage folding bellows cameras, so they're closed up and stacked behind the few that show. Flanking items on top shelf are electrical power line insulators.)

Bottom shelf (L to R): Nikon Action 10x50 binoculars, 24mm 1.8ED G, 180mm 2.8EDIF, cast iron decoration (middle), 20mm 2.8, 28mmPC, FM2n/MD12 w/ 35mm 1.4.

Only item missing is the photo tool to make this image, my D750 w/35mm f1.8ED G lens. Plus 70-300mm not in the photo.

I took this of the shelf I have in my new craft room.

I have my scrapbook magazines, idea books and my acrylic stamps on this shelf. In the baskets on the bottom I have all my fabric stored.

Tried to display everyone on a shelf but failed. I did think it looked good enough to warrant a picture though.

This winter shelf will make a great addition to any home.

Due to some special circumstances we were faced with a shelf cloud yesterday evening. Especially in the center of the Netherlands we were able to see such an impressive cloud with thunder, wind and heavy rain. It's a rather rare weather phenomenon in the Netherlands.
