In 1980, South Korea had 38 million people. More than 8 million lived in Seoul proper, and the metropolitan area housed more than 11 million.
[Today, the country has more than 50 million, the Seoul metropolitan area nearly 26 million, and Seoul proper nearly 10.5 million.]
In view of the population statistics above, this scene appears remarkably serene, almost provincial.
The station, now known as "Old Seoul Station" (구서울역사; 舊서울驛舍) was built under Japanese rule during 1922-1925. It was replaced by a new station upon opening of the KTX high-speed railway in 2004. The old station, designated as a historic site during 1981, was remodeled as a venue for cultural events during 2009-2011. It was designated "Culture Station Seoul 284" (문화역서울 284, 文化驛서울 284, munhwayeok seoul 284) during 2012.
"Seoul Station" in Korean is "Seoul yeok." However . . . everyone I heard referred to this structure as "Seoul Eks," or something that sounded like "Eks." This sounded distinctly Japanese (驛, today in Japan simplified as 駅, is pronounced "eki" in Japanese). Interesting.
(The main railway station in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietiam, is and has always been named Ga Sài Gòn; "Ga" is borrowed from French, "Gare.")
1980 July 24.
