UP AC44CW and UP SD9043MAC lead this empty coal train on the former Chicago Northwestern. This train is headed back to the Powder river basin to be reloaded. The old coaling tower makes for a historical look back at how things used to be!

CP's 2nd 484 had the pleasure of a rare CP SD9043MAC leader, rounding the bend at Des Plaines. A "one of each" lash includes GE power from BNSF, [CSX] and NS. I believe this leader is actually "NS Pool Power" as this MAC has spent a lot of time paying back horsepower hours to Norfolk Southern the last 6 months or so, but was a welcome sight this morning nonetheless.
Empty CSX grain train V101 has a pair of Canadian Pacific SD70ACU's on the point as it makes its run from the Port of Albany to Bensenville, passing through the vineyard on the shores of Lake Erie in Portland, New York on the evening of July 31st. Lead unit CP 7021 is one of the armed forces tribute units, wearing the arid region scheme, while the trailing CP 7017 is one of five units to wear the block letter heritage scheme.

At sunset an eastbound CPR grain train heads east on the secondary main line across the middle of Saskatchewan as many geese overhead fly south for the upcoming winter. GP38-2, SD9043MAC, and an SD40-2F.
UP 3763 is in charge of CP 685, as it rolls across the Black River on a hot spring day in 2018. This was the grand finale for these UP SD9043MAC's, and getting a 2X1 set of them powering a CP train was pretty awe inspiring. These are obviously miles deep in to the deadlines at this point..
Utah Railway's Valmy, Nevada to Wildcat, Utah coal empty loads its ninth hopper at the Andalex Resources, Inc. loading facility on March 13, 1999. This now idled terminal opened for coal loading in April 1985.

A pair of SD90s lead a manifest along the Indiana Rail Road over one of several impressive trestles along the route. This shot was certainly worth the wade through knee deep mud to capture as the SD90s are being phased out on the INRD and this will likely be the only shot I ever get of them here.
A cold weather shortened morning loads snakes through the pond area of Toimi (milepost 28) on its way to Silver Bay behind NSM's leased SD9043MAC pair (130/133). This train had around 118 cars versus the standard 156.
If you spent some time along Union Pacific mainlines in 1997, you likely witnessed new EMD SD9043MACs pulling trains. UP 8096 and UP 8140 lead a 47 car AHNOA through Riverton, Utah the afternoon of June 20, 1997. In less than two months, Uncle Pete would pull the plug on the Tennesee Pass Subdivision, and this particular move would disappear from former D&RGW lines.
Canadian Pacific locomotives line the yard tracks at Field, British Columbia, on September 16, 2002. CP GE AC4400CW Nos. 8541 and 9530 flank EMD SD9043MAC No. 9141 across the main line from the station.
After chasing the train out of Indianapolis earlier in the day, we set up for the final shot of the day as Indiana Railroad’s token train SAHW heads west for interchange with Canadian National at Newton, IL. The train is seen here with a fresh crew out of Indiana Railroad’s Jasonville Yard as they cut through the Southern Indiana countryside in New Lebanon, IN with a pair of veteran Indiana Railroad SD9043MACs (9010/9001). The double stacks make for a very aesthetically pleasing background coming down and around the hill. Taken: 4-2-21
Within the last year or so, INRD has purchased handful of SD70Ms to replace the aging fleet of the 90MACs. I’m not sure how many are still active but to knowledge, a lot of the road freights run with their SD40-2s and the new SD70Ms. Which is still cool, but the time of having 90MACs at your disposal is slowly coming to end.
These two SD9043MAC locomotives were working pretty hard as they pulled train 221 out of Sudbury. I'd been able to hear this train coming for some time before it appeared around the bend.
My only encounter with Indiana Railroad's SD9043MACs was early one morning in southern Indiana. INRD 9013 and 9012 were standing silent, awaiting a train of empties to be ready for pulling at Hoosier Energy. These big EMDs have since been replaced by former Norfolk Southern SD70Ms.
A reactivated SD9043MAC scoots past Kansas City's Union Station on Main Track 4 of the KCT East-West Corridor at Penn Ave. Interlocking as it leads UP train AASNP-09.
For most of 2018, traffic levels had warranted the need for additional power, and UP reactivated SD60/SD60M's, Dash 8's Dash 9's and what was left of SD9043MAC's on their roster. This is right before the dawn of PSR, and this was most likely the last really "fun" year before things took a nosedive in terms of unique and eclectic power.
This was also the last time SD9043MAC's were in service on the UP. Many had already left the roster after UP sold 100 of them to NS in September 2014 to be rebuilt into SD70ACU's. Since 2018, CP had purchased 42 of them for their own SD70ACU rebuilds as well. Many of what were left have met the torch. 6/9/18.
Four Macs rolls into Linton and into some Killer sun as the train makes good time heading for home. With no traffic for Palestine SAHW will head right to Jasonville to tie up for the day, killing any more shots of this train after here.
With the 90's day's slowly coming to an end one photo I wanted to try knowing it may completely fail with speed lights was INRD's Tulip Trestle, which is now the largest scene I have deployed the portable sun at and will probably stay that way for a long time. Arriving about 30 minutes ahead of the train I found myself in a sea of absolute darkness, by far the darkest spot I have ever tried to light up which also made placing the train in the correct spot very hard. With roughly 7 flashes of the 9 going off for this photo at ISO 3200, I wont complain what so ever with my results. It is a photo I want to now retry at a later date but If I never shoot the 90's again, I can say I'm Pretty happy with my coverage over the last few months.

A pair of battle-weary UP SD9043MACs rumble into River Forest with an eastbound mixed freight. UP was taking delivery of ES44ACs at the time, and several MACs were renumbered into the 3000s, including the trailer, #3519 (formerly #8064).
UP still had around 300 90MACs in service back then and they were not an uncommon sight on the old Northwestern routes. A few months later, several MACs were discovered with cracked frames, and the fleet was sidelined. Both MACs were ultimately sold to Norfolk Southern and rebuilt at Juniata.
Our last shot of day eight is from the IN Rt. 54 overpass just east of Bloomfield. Time to head for Marion, OH for Summerail.
The SD9043MAC we saw loading at Caballo Mine earlier in the day is now heading south (RR E/B) at Reno Jct on the Orin Line.
Texas Pacifico Railroad Freight Train passes through Coleman, TX. on their way back to San Angelo, TX. after doing some work in Coleman, TX. with Ferro Mex SD70ACe 4096 leading 3 CEFX SD9043MAC’s. I stayed an extra day to get the Ferro Mex SD70ACe 4096 leading back to San Angelo, TX. I had seen it trailing the day before & figured I could get the Ferro Mex SD70ACe 4096 leading & it worked out the next day.
NS 7316 (ex UP 8187 SD9043MAC) doubles out of Parsec, LLC/Simpson Yard Intermodal Facility. Even though this was a public street, the rent-a-cop security guard was firm in letting me know ‘I was putting the facility’s safety at risk by taking photos.’ This shot is no longer possible after NS and The City of Jacksonville closed North Edgewood Drive in 2023.

A smoky Union Pacific SD9043MAC leads a westbound stack train on the former SP Tucumcari Line at Vaughn, NM as the sun sets. The BNSF Transcon can be seen crossing over the train in the distance. This was once part of Southern Pacific's famed Golden State Route which connected with the Rock Island's mainline to Chicago at Santa Rosa, NM 45 miles east of here.

An uncommon leader for the Transcon, a Canadian Pacific SD70ACU leads BNSF H KCKGAL1 16A east on Main Track 2 of the BNSF Marceline Sub. coming into Sibley past stored bulkheads in the old KCPL Loop Track.
This photo won't win any awards with the lighting conditions, but I went out to shoot this since I ran this consist all night from Newton to Argentine on the H NEWKCK1 16A, and it made a quick yard turn to get right back out.

MPRCB-11 with all EMD ------>>> 8065,3929,8106,5149,8331. This train is running into the sunset along the Geneva sub, ex CNW and splitting ex CNW searchlights. These SD9043MAC's served the UP well, IMO. They hauled coal for most of their tenure at UP and may have lasted longer if it wasn't for the cracking of the frame.
