Leaving a stormy Crowsnest Pass behind, an eastbound Canadian Pacific freight curves away from Lundbreck, Alberta, on the morning of September 28, 2010. Pulling the train is Union Pacific EMD SD9043MAC No. 8301 and CP GE ES44AC No. 8778.

Union Pacific’s West Local, powered by three Rio Grande GP40-2s, waits on the grade of Rocky Spur for a westbound UP coal empty to pass on the main line at Rocky, Colorado, on February 9, 2002. After passage of the coal train, the local will head east back to Denver’s North Yard.

A Union Pacific coal train with 107 empties takes a tour of the D&RGW through the Red Narrows of Spanish Fork Canyon on Aug. 9, 1998. Leading the charge is Chicago & North Western AC4400CW No. 8830, followed by Union Pacific SD9043MAC No. 8010, and Southern Pacific AC4400CW No. 122.

Union Pacific EMD SD9043MAC Nos. 8024 and 8241 power the Potash local down UP’s incredibly scenic former Rio Grande Cane Creek Subdivision at milepost 30 in Bootlegger Canyon north (railroad east) of Potash, Utah, on September 29, 2000.

Working through a rock cut and past snow-covered evergreens, a westbound Union Pacific coal train led by three EMD SD9043MACs approaches Crescent on a very wet April 23, 1999.

On Monday August 8, 2022, my friend Don and I spent an afternoon on the Indiana Rail Road attempting to shoot westbound manifest SAHW. In several hours, the weather did everything but snow. It was a challenging chase. Here, the train crosses over Tulip Trestle at Tulip, IN with two SD9043MAC's. Also, it was here that we were found by a starving kitten, which we brought home. Named Tulip for the trestle, she provided us with great company on the trip. She came back to Fredericksburg with me and is now happily bouncing around the house like a ping-pong ball. A wonderful, loving girl.

A pair of EMD flares lead Union Pacific train AHNOA-16 past Princeton siding on the east slope of Tennessee Pass. While the SD45 was working just fine, the trailing SD9043MAC was having issues loading. The crew would stop a bit further up the hill to try and fix the problem.

Fighting with constant overcast conditions all day, the sun finally broke free here just long enough to get my only sunny image of this train

NSM's morning train rounds the corner at milepost 5 as it nears the end of its trip at Silver Bay. The SD9043MACs are scheduled to be replaced by rebuilt ex-CSX SD70ACe models.

Back in February 2011, I made a trip up to Midland, just north of Lawrence on the UP Kansas Sub, and found this UP SD9043MAC on the point of an eastbound manifest. The trailing unit is the NS 9578. Surprisingly, given all of the rebuild programs that these respective fleets have been involved with, neither unit got rebuilt into anything else; the 8084 (later, the 3560) was scrapped, while the 9578 appears to be going strong as of this writing in 2022.

I wished that more of these ended up with the wings on the nose, as the completely bare look of these was rather lacking, but aside from that, I really liked the look of these units.

CPR Silhouette Saturday or CPRSS.

At sunset an CPR grain train heads east on the secondary main line across the middle of Saskatchewan as many geese overhead fly south for the upcoming winter. A neat consist of one each GP38-2, SD9043MAC, and an SD40-2F for power.

After driving the length of the INRD and seeing a whole lot of nothing, they spit two trains out the opposite ends of Jasonville, Indiana late in the afternoon within minutes of each other.

Before I caught the Cummins demonstrator heading north, this train to Indianapolis headed south with a great trio of power. Note 25th Anniversary heritage unit #9025 behind 9012, and Iowa Pacific-painted CEFX SD9043MAC #111 bringing up the rear. I believe the 111 is back from a short stint on the Texas New Mexico railroad, minus its IP markings.

Union Pacific SD9043MAC 8025 led an eastbound coal load away from the setting sun on the Clinton Subdivision along US 30 near Lowden in 1996.

SAHW with a pair of clean mac's rolls across the dried up Shuffle creek with a hefty train for Palestine and Jasonville. Leafs were falling fast while I twiddled my thumbs for an hour waiting on the train to roll across the bridge quickly bringing stick season upon us and possibly the last fall these Mac's will see.

It has been awhile since I have seen one of these SD9043MAC's in action. On May 6, 2023, CP 3747 leads a southbound slot train as it heads for BC for reloading.

The 3747 is an ex-UP unit that, as you can see, hasn't been sent for a proper repaint. Who knows if it ever will.

A brand new EMD SD9043MAC leads a 55-car Roper-Stockton manifest at 2nd South in Salt Lake City, Utah the evening of July 5, 1997. UP's MROST symbol was short lived. It would soon change to a Roper to Roseville train.

A pair of INRD SD9043MAC's have completed loading at Bear Run and turn to exit the loop on their way toward the powerplant at Merom on the afternoon of Oct. 22, 2020. Their trip would not be long through, as the trailing motor would shut down before they reached the top of the hill at Dugger, and would not move to the powerplant until after dark.

The massive drag line in the background, after sitting dormant and rusting away for years, began being dismantled and scrapped this month.

UP SD9043MACs No. 8114 and 8105 pull the MRONY train east from Main 2 to Main 1 at Rio, Utah the morning of Nov. 21, 2008.

CSX's Monon Subdivision was ripe with cool props in which to use while chasing Big Macs ambling along at 10 miles per hour.

It was fun while it lasted.

INRD SAHW is westbound outside of New Lebanon, Indiana heading west towards Palestine with stacks that will eventually be interchanged to CN at Effingham.

Due to issues with NSM's leased GEs brought over from LS&I they are using the two big MACs this week, as seen here from "Railfan Rock" just north of Beaver Bay/Silver Bay.

Normally NSM runs shorter trains when the air temp is below zero but this 58-car move is shorter than usual, possibly due to ore recovery issues at the mine. The temp as reported by a detector was -10F, cool but not as cold as it will likely get this winter.

The sun has pretty much disappeared behind the trees as SAHW knocks off the last few times to Palestine.

Union Pacific's Herrington, Kansas to Roper, Utah manifest freight glides along a lengthy tangent of D&RGW track near Riverton, Utah the evening of July 7, 1997. All three of these locomotives are likely retired and/or scrapped today: UP SD9043MAC No. 8122, CSX C40-8 No. 7567, and CSX C30-7 No. 7089.

UP train MROAS at Tennessee Pass in May of 1997. UP 8124 is still fairly clean, having been received from EMD the month before.

SD9043MAC leads eastbound manifest down GN Hill. (Yes, winter's coming soon.)

Indiana Railroad SAHW rolls passed Lake Lemon near Bloomington, Indiana on a dreary but colorful fall afternoon with a SD40-2 and a SD9043MAC doing the honors.

CSX Q388 heads east through Whiting on the NS Chicago Line with a CEFX SD9043MAC leading a CSX SD40-3. This train had several problems out of the BRC which enabled me to get to my spot to shoot this train.

With EMD SD9043MAC units on the head and rear of a 100-car train, Union Pacific's CWELX (West Elk, Colorado to Los Angeles Harbor, California) export coal train descends a 2% grade through the lower horseshoe at Gilluly, Utah on Oct. 10, 1999.

Union Pacific MDVRO heads west through Arvada, Colorado, on October 19, 2001. GE C41-8W No. 9465 leads a UP Dash 9, an AC4400CW and an EMD SD9043MAC. Rounding off the 8-locomotive consist are four more AC4400CWs—one Chicago & North Western and three from Southern Pacific. The downtown Denver skyline can be seen in the far background above the train.

Ripping east under an overpass between Sullivan and Dugger with empties for Bear Run.

Finally graduated from KSU on Saturday! My first act as a free man was to head out for a trip on the INRD. On the first night in Southern Indiana, we found northbound HWSA (Hiawatha Yard in Jasonville to Senate Ave Yard in Indy) sporting the typical SD9043MAC pair. After a quick shot at Tulip, this cut south/west of the quiet village of Solsberry proved to be a good spot to round out the first day seeing red and white engines.

INRD power lays over outside the Merom Generating Station near Sullivan, Indiana after bringing in loads from Oaktown the previous day. The power will shuttle empties to Bear Run Mine later that day.

INRD's Hiawatha to Baker turn heads north over an old wooden bridge in Terre Haute, Indiana. Today's train consisted of a good mix of power, an SD9043MAC, an SD40-2, and a GP38-2.

NS 31K stops and waits for a crew in Kankakee Illinois with a CEFX SD9043MAC, NS ES44DC, and a NS GP38-2

One of Canadian Pacific's SD9043MACs - rare in the US - is at the head end of train 198 at Paynesville, Minn., on the CP's Paynesville Subdivision, May 2002. No. 9147 has been rebuilt and is now SD70ACU No. 7017, one of CP's ten heritage units.

This unit came out of Metro East Industries in East St. Louis back in March 2015 re-painted from CEFX maroon and lettered for the Texas & New Mexico Railroad (TNMR), then part of the Iowa Pacific family of shortlines. Upon closer inspection, the shadow of the removed IP diamond can be still seen on the long hood, and a quick online search indicates IP sold this line to Watco in May 2015.

Chicago & North Western C44-9W No. 8694 and UP SD9043MAC No. 8026 pull a 67 car North Platte to Los Angeles auto train west through Lake Point on a beautiful May 10, 1997 evening.

Union Pacific SD9043MAC No. 8138 leads an 84-car CSVLB 05 coal train along the former D&RGW at Kyune in Price Canyon, Utah the afternoon of Sept. 5, 2008. A three-unit manned helper was cut in mid-train.

A pair of new GE AC44CWCTE motors await their first assignment in Union Pacific's Proviso yard in 2002.

An older EMD SD9043MAC and a former Chicago and North Western GE C44-9W stand by on another track looking on.

After being in the area the day before to shoot the hydrogen unit, I found myself back at Brant again chasing another unique unit on CP.
