Eastbound CSX K447-29 passes under the C&O cantilever signal at RB Cabin near Louisa, KY with a CP SD70ACU rebuild leading.

The winter shadows are growing long under a brilliant blue sky, as Canadian Pacific's eastbound train 288, ducks under the classic Bobolink Road bridge just outside of Reeseville.

Ever since the days of the IC&E, I have always wanted a shot here at Fredonia, IL crossing over the Cedar River.

Heritage painted SD70ACU 7017 leads the daily CP 475 up from Ottumwa with a massive train for Nahant and points North.

And for now I can check this box.

With nothing better to do, I followed the train into the twin cities. CP 240 heads over the Mississippi River at Camden. They would make some back and forth moves into Humboldt for an hour-ish to set out bad orders.

CP 7022 leads train 401 as it approaches Keith on the western edge of Calgary.

Nice to get the Navy Veterans unit leading over the "twin bridges".

CSX I166-12 has the usual CP power and on this day the leader was a fresh looking SD70ACU. Here they're rolling by "F Tower" in Fostoria on their way east across CSX in northern Ohio. 2/12/2023

Capping off another incredible chase along CP's River Subdivision, CP 7021 works through the S curve and over the causeway at Maple Springs with a westbound potash train.

Canadian Pacific train 240 eases across the ex Soo Line bridge over the Mississippi River with a heritage-painted SD70ACu on point. This train met a westbound at Humbolt Yard, and is now crossing the bridge to get headroom to work the yard before continuing east to Pigs Eye Yard.

On their first revenue run, CP 7010 and 7015 lead CP train 197 through the Foley Wye into the Shoreham yard to make a pick up.

Going back about a year while the CMQ takeover was still recent, 251 is seen coming around the curve at Long Pond behind freshly rebuilt SD70ACU 7055. Those old CMQ boxcars that are headpin seem to have disappeared, it's been months since I've seen any.

I've been in Ohio for almost 6 years, but soon the Air Force will be sending me to the Arctic. In between moving my stuff and taking care of paperwork, I've been squeezing in some railfanning here and there. May 1 was my last full day of railfanning here in Ohio, and CSX, once again, delivered with one hell of a consist.

Sprinting east towards Crestline on the Mount Victory Subdivision, CP 7023, CP 9832, and CSX 8482 (YN2) lead Q560-01 through the namesake town on a gorgeous Saturday morning. Obviously, railroads don't make up consists to please railfans. But still, sometimes I'd like to think so, and I couldn't ask for a better consist to photograph one last time.

CP 260 rolls through the riverside town of Brownsville, Minnesota.

CP maroon and grey "script lettering" heritage SD70ACu 7013 leads CSX K684 south across Popolopen Creek at Fort Montgomery, NY, on a hot July 4th afternoon.

CP 260 crosses the Mississippi River into Hastings on a lift bridge built in 1981 with a retro SD70ACU leading. The bridge replaced an earlier swing bridge that was built in 1871. The signals were most likely installed in the early 1980s.

We heard. We drove. We chased. We conquered. Car broke after. All worth it.

Canadian Pacific's SD70ACU heritage fleet has finally hit the rails with No. 7015 pinch hitting for an ailing F unit on the railroads business train. The colors are really popping along the Mississippi as the train hugs the river near Maple Springs, Minnesota.

CP's Navy Tribute unit leads train 118 east between Indus and Dalemead on a reasonably mild day.

CP 7022 is still looking sharp after being touched up ahead of Remembrance Day. Aside from being washed, the entire Oxide Red underframe was repainted to ensure the unit looked it's best.

Canadian Pacific train 686-411 shatters the calm in downtown Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, on April 10, 2020. Lead by CP heritage painted SD70ACU No. 7014 and another locomotive buried in the middle of its 185 empties, the train is passing the Milwaukee Road depot on the former eastward main of the double track mainline between Chicago and the Twin Cities.

Pan Am Southern 16R is seen heading east through Zoar, MA along the Deerfield River with 2 of Canadian Pacific's newly rebuilt SD70ACu's providing power.

CP 7020, one of five military units, leads CPKC train 243 over the Crow River in Rockford, with an NS dash 9 along for the ride as well. Down below, some local fisherman try their luck. Fitting for a Memorial Day weekend post.

A glorious early November afternoon finds one of Canadian Pacific's heritage locomotives leading eastbound train 288 through Watertown, as a few vestiges of autumn's color still cling to the trees.

CP 7016 leads a short CP 236 towards Hamilton at Newman Road.

A pair of SD70ACU’s shove Eastbound 12G up the West Slope of the Alleghenies.

A flashback for Friday. Four SD40E rebuilds shove eastbound freight 10G up the long, grueling grade from Johnstown to Gallitzin, passing the infamous sweeping curve at the Cassandra overlook on Oct. 12, 2013.

I remember thinking how boring these things were on this trip... Just another one of those super common things of the past with SD70ACU rebuilds comprising virtually all helper moves on the mountain today. The 20 boring pairs of SD40E's that were always floating between Johnstown and Altoona have since been spread out across the NS system in local service. DPU's on most trains across the PRR have now even further cut back the necessity for helpers to the point that the Cresson engine service shop was closed on account of the smaller fleet of helper power.

I spotted the 7021 leading a westbound out of St. Paul Yard, so I made my way to the Withrow Sub to try a chase. First stop was here at Stinson, where they head straight through with clears. A nice surprise was this unit had been freshly washed and looked really sharp.

Today's 250 with the military tribute unit leading passed by us at 17 around 08:30, just late enough for the sun to settle in and burn off the clouds. There have been only a handful of these rebuilds over the Moosehead thus far, and this is the first of the specially painted units. In tow were the usual pair of GE's and also a set of ballast train power (the good stuff), with 101 cars, the last of which being a CP plow. I was able to transform a well placed tree into a telephone pole to get the tree stand up for some more elevation. Luckily there is still some nice color hanging on in the area.

Getting in some more morning post-post-graduate walks, I had a fun chance encounter on this morning with something a little more interesting than usual. The only thing moving was an eastbound off the Pioneer Extension. As a surprise, a 1 x 1 coal empty came into view with the Canadian Navy unit in the lead after I posted up at St. Anthony for a few minutes. Always a fun walk by St. Anthony

The warm summer sun is about done for the day in downtown Reeseville, as Canadian Pacific's westbound train 287 hustles towards Portage with a fine looking CP heritage locomotive leading the way.

Summer 2020

This colorful consist found its way on a UP grain train to the Port of Houston this past week, consisting of CP heritage SD70ACU #7014, NS C40-9W #9456, and BNSF Executive MAC #9653. After coming in on GSNVHO-22, the consist was assigned to outbound GSHOWA-30 for Wakeeney, KS, making for a nice treat on Halloween afternoon.

After departing PTRA's North Yard, the train is seen here running south on the West Belt north of downtown Houston. It was routed out of town on the ex-SP Eureka Sub, necessitating an "around the world" trip through the terminal.

This consist was split up shortly afterward, with BNSF 9653 being set out in north Texas, and NS 9456 being set out in Salina, KS.

Tomorrow marks the first day of CP and KCS merging to form the CPKC. Today I caught word of CP 7012N coming in the afternoon. Work ended at 15:00 and I headed for the Hamilton Subdivision to track down the Northbound train.

Prior to the purchase of the Providence and Worcester by the G&W, a loaded limestone train for Bow, New Hampshire, is seen hustling it’s way though Millbury with a couple of interesting visitors up front.

Laying over in Worcester from a previous nights ethanol train, a CN C40-8 and an NS SD70ACU were used to rescue the heavy limestone train. The train stalled in Northbridge due to being underpowered. Shocker.

After seeing some of CN’s dash 8’s hauling limestone on the Iron Range in Minnesota, I thought it was interesting having this one on the east coast moving a different type of limestone train. Back then, it was a dream of mine to see them out in their element on Canadian National property. Glad I can say I was finally able to!

Almost to its destination at St. Paul Yard, CP 240 heads through crackheadville, dodging between tree shadows. It was pretty quiet in the cities on this afternoon, so this ended up being the only train I shot in the area on Saturday, can't complain too much with this train though.

The CP WWII commemorative SD70ACU making a surprise visit on the former Santa Fe Transcon with Q-NSABAR. Was super neat to see this locomotive for the first time and it be leading on the Chilli.

A 3 x 1 CP eastbound heads over the Mississippi River after meeting one westbound just around the corner at Humboldt. Fortunately, I can remember this spot this time of year as it really works well, regardless of the humdrum consist. The proper SD70ACU leader was the rear DPU.

CP 2-246 sweeps around the western banks of the Mississippi River near Maple Springs, Minnesota as it rolls down the scenic Milwaukee Road mainline along the river towards La Crosse.
