While visiting SCRM (formerly OERM) in Perris CA this past Saturday, we went off site for lunch and coming back in were pleasantly surprised to see McKeen Motor Car Co. Southern Pacific trailer 16 sitting there. I knew what it was right away as I had been following its progress on Madison Kirkman's McKeen Motor Car Company Historical Society page on Facebook. He just salvaged it from its home of many decades (not sure where exactly) and it's come to So Cal for eventual restoration. www.facebook.com/McKeenMotorCar One other McKeen trailer is in captivity at Illinois Railway Museum (I've also posted a photo of that one).
Narrow gauge steam locomotive "Chloe" just getting underway at a 2001 steam-up at Ward and Betty Kimball's Grizzly Flats Railroad. The 500-foot long 3-foot gauge railroad was located in the Kimball's backyard in suburban Los Angeles and was operational for more than fifty years. In the cab are Ward's son John and grandson Nathan. The equipment is preserved today at the Orange Empire Railway Museum (SCRM)

Orange Empire Railway Museum provided a steam locomotive and train for the movie "The Changeling". Here's the trainset at the San Bernardino depot. October, 2007.
While the Freedom Train visited Charleston in November 1976, the Charleston Chapter ran excursions around the old Army base in North Charleston, using Porter 44-ton diesel No 76 (which had been given that new number and a Bicentennial paint scheme for the occasion), SR hvywt coach 1052, and SR lightwt coach 810 (the Bristol). Here are some crew members comparing time prior to a run, l-r, me, flagman (those sideburns!); head brakeman Milton Nelson; and engineer Rick Baker. (Conductor Burrell W. Varner, being a true retired SR passenger conductor, refused to pose, but I'm wearing one of his old uniform vests, which I still have.)
I took the throttle for the infamous return trip, during which it was alleged by all involved that I attained a speed of 35 mph, which was theoretically impossible, according to chapter member Phillip Woodall. The Chapter's Chief Mechanical Officer, Alex Ericson, said he saw us streaking across the base and thought the Silver Meteor had been detoured. Engine 76 had bad injectors (ain't it always?) and was pouring out black smoke like a coal-burner (but not quite as much as an Alco). I looked across the cab at Fireman Jack LeCato, he was sprawled back on his seat, frozen, his mouth was moving but he couldn't get any sound to come out. Maybe I just couldn't hear him over the engine noise. I assumed he was encouraging me to go faster. A co-worker, SCL "SY" Tower operator J. D. "Dusty" Broad, had brought his wife and kids over, and I invited him to ride the engine. At one point, he shouted that he was going to jump. I told him to just sit down and shut up. (He later said he wasn't afraid of derailing, but he had thought the engine was going to blow up.) I leaned out of the window and looked back at the train, all three vestibules had a crew member hanging out and signing me down. I just grinned and shook my head. Nobody thought to pull the air, I guess. Later, it was generally agreed that I had been trying to recreate the Wreck of Old 97.
After we stopped, head brakie Nelson promptly detrained and kissed the ground, professing his thanks for being alive. During the ensuing debate over how fast we had been going, Milton said in his thick Charleston brogue, "Awl oy know is we was rowlin' moytee fast, moytee fast!" Conductor Varner stomped off in a silent rage, his only complaint was that he didn't have time to sell as many chapter trinkets to riders as he usually did. Well, he had to gripe about something, he was after all the conductor. The passengers, on the other hand, were delighted. They thought it was a great ride.
The coaches have gone on to hopefully greener pastures, the engine is now part of the SCRM collection. Photo by our fireman, that great railfan and rail historian Captain John M. LeCato. I sure wish he and Burrell had gotten in the picture with us. I think I am now the only surviving member of that crew.

It is only open on Sundays and I was there on Monday. It is one of 4 museums I was able to see while in SC. My wife was at a conference and I was free to take pix! The Lancaster and Chester Railroad has in recent years fascinated me. Racing at Carolina Motorsports Park and staying at motels in Kershaw or Camden south Carolina only whetted my quest for knowledge of the operations. As part of my trip to Columbia, I visited the L & C. On the way there, I found this L&C boxcar at the SCRM.

More information
Social Media has been around for some time, and lots of businesses are using it both for internal and external collaboration with employees, customers, and partners. They are realizing, little by little, that without a strategy the usefulness of the channels and tools is limited, and the calculated ROI are slowly disappearing as the cracks begin to show around the foundation of the business intent. The use of Enterprise 2.0 for internal social strategies and Social CRM for external social work has shown promise – but stops short of being a complete business solution. c
Top executives from Bay Area will tackle this subject at the upcoming event.

SC Railroad Museum in Winnsboro SC. I was able to snag a round-trip to the nearby granite quarry. (Of course, my job was to offer some interesting botany tidbits along the way.) Here, Roger Stroup explains some of the details of the history of the railroad, and the mining operation.
At this point, we are traveling through the Greenbrier Cut. You can see on the rocks where they drilled in to set explosive charges.
