Intro of Second Half

Saps at Sea Tent, Proudly Present:

LAUREL AND HARDY – JUST ONE MORE TEENSY-WEENSY NIGHT!

Welcome back All Saps! To our second, 39th Anniversary Year Gathering of Marvelous Movie Delights and Humorous Hijinks!

Here your Grandest of Sheiks has assembled a night you will not soon forget. We have a "Special" Guest author in attendance, Mr. Craig Calman. Author of "100 Years of Brodies with Hal Roach: The Jaunty Journeys of a Hollywood Motion Picture and Television Pioneer". A loving look at the man responsible for being the boss of Stan and Ollie, and bringing to us those wonderful Comedy Classics we enjoy each and every meeting. I will interview Craig and he will share great stories and anecdotes. You can also purchase his fine book and have it autographed for a measly $30!

Our special program is JUST ONE MORE TEENSY-WEENSY.... Stan & Ollie and Alcohol, rarely mix. In this case hilariously so! You will see a glass lifting CartOOn, then what happens when you mix two vagrants, a mad Judge that wants them out of town, a drunken benefactor (The always inebriated Arthur Housman) and a tipsy Woman.... everything, in SCRAM! (1932) Then our guest comedian, Red Skelton, provides a demonstration of the wonders of Guzzler's Gin. After a tasty (Alcohol free) intermission, we will watch the recently restored BLOTTO (1930). Stan and Babe decide a night on the town is in order. Off to a Nightclub they go with some Prohibition Booze...they think. What happens when Stan's wife (Anita Garvin) gets a little suspicious? Come see in this evening of .... (Hick) sobriety. Oh yes, there will also be a few surprisses, I mean, surprises .... ah heck, just come and see. March 25th at Williams Hall next to the Trinity Church.

Your Grandest of Sheiks

I don't know what it was the bleeding or the exhaustion. Whatever it was, it made me lose consciousness. When I woke up, I was still being dragged around by two ninjas. The wound on my arm was at least wrapped up. Still, some of my ribs are no doubt broken, something in my leg is out of place, there's some swelling around the left side of my face. To be honest, I'm a bit surprised this was all. Hell, I'm lucky to be alive. But I don't care. All I care about right now is Steph. I need to be there for her right now, no matter how busted up I am. And these Mortal Kombat rejects aren't gonna stop me.

"Let me go...now. I'm not asking again..."

"Be quiet, child!"

"So that's how it is..."

Can't say I didn't warn them. I was a struggle, and I hurt all over doing it, but I was able to weasel my arms out of their grip and slam the back of my fists in their noses as hard as I could. I hit hard enough that something in their faces at least came loose, so their pain was enough to distract them. They weren't very well trained, I guess. Now that I was out of their grip, I grab the backs of their heads and slam their skulls together. I let the go and they fall to the floor out cold. Then I let out a pained grunt and fall to my knees as something in my chest switch places. It wasn't jut a sharp pain either. It was the kind that lingers and makes you feel horrible for a good 20-30 seconds before it gives out. Injuries...just a setback. Not gonna stop me from getting to Steph. Neither was Talia, who was blocking my path when I recovered from the pain.

"Timothy, you must be reasonable. Let us help you, you're injured!"

"You think that-*ah!*-that's gonna stop me? Get out of my way unless you wanna end up like these guys."

"Why are you doing this to yourself? You've passed the first trial, you've already proven your strength. There's no reason to go on."

"Yeah, there is. I gotta be there for her..."

'What are you thinking? This is her challenge, not yours. You can't help her."

"I never said help. I just don-*ugh*- just don't want her alone. Now scram."

"Stubborn like a mule. Just as he is..."

She starts walking towards me. Well, I warned her. I take a swing at her, aiming for a nerve cluster in the side of her neck. She grabs my hand before I make the hit, though. Instead of kicking my ass, though, she puts my arm around the back of her neck and starts walking me to were I was gonna go.

"The hell are you doing?"

"Stephanie's Trial is a long walk from here. You'll collapse before you get off this floor."

"You're helping me?"

"You have to be there. You said it yourself."

"Thank you..."

Dope Folks (2018)

Every Wednesday, in honor of Ed Lover Dance Day from Yo! MTV Raps, I take a break from rock and roll to write a little bit about hip hop. In the late 80s and early 90s hip hop ruled my musical life. During this often called 'Golden Era' I discovered so much incredible music. As I am slowly replacing the CDs I've had for twenty-five plus years with vinyl copies, I'm going to talk about some albums that had a really important impact on me during some very formative years.

Kaotic Style seemed to have mostly been active in the 1990-1996 era and only really had a few underground singles to their name. They aren't a group I ever heard about back then as my only exposure to hip hop where I lived was Yo! MTV Raps and The Source. I'm not going to say it was out of the question that they may have gotten one of their EPs written up in The Source at some point, but I certainly do not remember it.

Dope Folks is one of those great labels that are digging deep to find the forgotten gems of early 90s hip hop. They've put out some really interesting releases, though I have to say that this Kaotic Style record may be my favorite of the bunch. The production is really strong with interesting samples, some familiar, some not, but all used in a really cool way.

Lyrically, the two main MCs (Big Grand and Scram) can hang with all but the elite of golden era lyricists. They're not out of this world wordsmiths, but they are both steady, creative and more than hold their own over the excellent beats they are working with.

The only thing about this LP that I think is odd is that the song "Intro" is at the beginning of the second side instead of starting off the album. I assume that's to maintain the integrity of the track order of the EP version of this that originally came out in '94, but it strikes me as being kind of weird from a flow standpoint. That minor critique aside, this is definitely a record worth checking out if you're looking for new-to-you golden era tunes.

Kaotic Style - A Diamond in the Ruff (This is just the 5 songs from the EP that came out in 94, this LP has 10 songs in total):

Immature Black-crowned Night Heron looking a bit defiant. This is a very big crop and I'm surprised it doesn't look more grainy than this. The herons (these and greens) are starting to show up here and about now. I'm hoping to get some better shots before they scram :)

Monday ... what can I say? It's over!! Ha, just kidding, it wasn't really half bad for a Monday.

To view the photo, see the original version of this real photo postcard.

This rotated version makes it easier to read the handwritten message:

"We tended the Iowa Picnic here last Saturday. Saw lots of folks from Iowa that I knew. 10,000 people there. I can't tell when we will leave here. Too many places to go & too much to see to get away very soon. We expect to visit an old friend of mine that lives at Santa Ana, 30 miles south. We may move out here some time. Love to all. Goodbye, Leni & Mame"

Info taken from whats written on the back of the photo.

"I see some woman trying to take our pictures ... we better scram"

We've got some GREAT pet items right now! Get 'em while they're hot! The first 2 pictures show a Sofa Scram scat mat. We have 2 of them! If your cat or dog stands on it, it makes a noise to make them "scat". Great for teaching them to stay off of the furniture, counters, stove... And the Orange Emergency Vet Fund has a great exercise pen available for sale! And we currently have a couple of small pens and even a car ramp to make it easier for your seniors to get in and out of the car. It's lightweight, and holds up to 400 lbs! And a couple of "critter" cages -- for your rabbit, or guinea pig, or other small critter. And for humans, look at the selection of scrubs that has come in this week!!! And a very nice surround for your electric fireplace. Perfect, now that the freezing temperatures are here!

Bergen Arches (down in "The Cut")—train approaching. It was about this point that we decided we had reached the end of the inactive ruin. Time to scram—and so we did up the embankment to Tonnele Avenue.

Photos taken by at least two of my Cub Scouts, whilst at SCRAM 2013 using my spare camera. They both took quiet a few pictures of the birds of prey display!

SCRAM is a Surrey County Activity for Cub Scouts, held on the 15th June 2013.

Surrey is a county in the south of England.

Hey you! Yeah, you! Who you lookin' at? Get outa heeah! Beat it! I said Scram!!

: : Sgt. Raven's Log : :

My men seem to be dropping like flies, now. First I lose Mark under the poor leadership of my second, Ears, and now he goes and gets himself killed, too.

*Sigh.*

Ears was happy, too. He had finally gotten to hack something - he turned a Separatist AA gun against them. He'd been waiting to scratch that itch since Zero Hour. But of course, knowing my luck, the very same day his specialization finally turns out to be useful is the day he goes and gets himself killed.

And I'm not jumping the gun, here. This isn't like Ears' report on Raxus. I'm not declaring him dead while he's still breathing.

He's gone. A dozen laser cannon blasts through his chest completely fried his organs and he died instantly. His vital were there in my HUD one second, the next he's out of ammo and the B3 riddles him with holes and his vitals wink out.

Let me backtrack a bit.

We received our orders, and Ears hacked the AA gun, like I said. 51 was itching to blow up that B3, and Rook was itching to get his hands on its carcass. Me? I just wasnted to do my job.

The next part of our orders were simple. Scram. Make like mad down the side of the building and head for the speeder bay to make a a last-ditch effort to defend the place against a horde of clankers.

Now I'm not the type of man to question orders. Heck, that's against my code. But they expected us, with only a few rockets to our name, to defend a crappy little outpost from several battalions of B1s, squads of B2s and three B3s, all topped off by three gunships?

Bull.

Even the rockets didn't help everyone. The squad we set up shop next to - "The Pub Scrubs" - weren't exactly having an easy time of it. Their demolitions expert, a one Private Throws, missed every single shot he had in the chamber. Three rockets to take down a slow, lumbering hulk of metal with, and he couldn't pull it off. They were lucky we came along. 51 blew it out of the water.

But it wasn't slow, like we thought. It was fast. Faster than a B2. The perfect war machine. Big, fast, powerful. Yet not perfect. Cause we tore it a new one. But not before it made Ears a pile of swiss cheese.

I guess that's two replacements I need to sign the paperwork for, now.

Command'll love this.

Fifteenth of May. Cherry blossom. The swifts

Materialize at the tip of a long scream

Of needle. ‘Look! They’re back! Look!’ And they’re gone

On a steep

Controlled scream of skid

Round the house-end and away under the cherries. Gone.

Suddenly flickering in sky summit, three or four together,

Gnat-whisp frail, and hover-searching, and listening

For air-chills – are they too early? With a bowing

Power-thrust to left, then to right, then a flicker they

Tilt into a slide, a tremble for balance,

Then a lashing down disappearance

Behind elms.

They’ve made it again,

Which means the globe’s still working, the Creation’s

Still waking refreshed, our summer’s

Still all to come —

And here they are, here they are again

Erupting across yard stones

Shrapnel-scatter terror. Frog-gapers,

Speedway goggles, international mobsters —

A bolas of three or four wire screams

Jockeying across each other

On their switchback wheel of death.

They swat past, hard-fletched

Veer on the hard air, toss up over the roof,

And are gone again. Their mole-dark labouring,

Their lunatic limber scramming frenzy

And their whirling blades

Sparkle out into blue —

Not ours any more.

Rats ransacked their nests so now they shun us.

Round luckier houses now

They crowd their evening dirt-track meetings,

Racing their discords, screaming as if speed-burned,

Head-height, clipping the doorway

With their leaden velocity and their butterfly lightness,

Their too much power, their arrow-thwack into the eaves.

Every year a first-fling, nearly flying

Misfit flopped in our yard,

Groggily somersaulting to get airborne.

He bat-crawled on his tiny useless feet, tangling his flails

Like a broken toy, and shrieking thinly

Till I tossed him up — then suddenly he flowed away under

His bowed shoulders of enormous swimming power,

Slid away along levels wobbling

On the fine wire they have reduced life to,

And crashed among the raspberries.

Then followed fiery hospital hours

In a kitchen. The moustached goblin savage

Nested in a scarf. The bright blank

Blind, like an angel, to my meat-crumbs and flies.

Then eyelids resting. Wasted clingers curled.

The inevitable balsa death.

Finally burial

For the husk

Of my little Apollo —

The charred scream

Folded in its huge power.

Ted Hughes

I love this poem. Richard Mabey quotes it in 'Nature Cure' - which makes me love it even more. Obviously you can't quite see the swifts in this photo but they are there - all wearing speedway goggles.

Lot of tall tales and myths regarding the water moccasin. I'm 66 now and I used to catch cottonmouths as a kid in Coosa County, Alabama. As an adult? No way. But I've photographed hundreds of them. Never felt threatened by any. Never been chased. Florida is cottonmouth heaven. They're everywhere. Sometimes I lay on the ground to photograph them. They either pose...or scram.

I wish Flickr would let us put notes on our pictures again. I'd like to mark the single Pintail duck taking flight. I think he wants to scram out of the way, because he hears the flapping thunder and knows what is coming. He is on the left 1/3rd of the photo and headed to the viewer's left.

(DSCN0483-swansbeginningstagesoftakingflightinit)

This isn't the best photograph, technically or artistically, but I was still happy to capture it. The moon burst out of the clouds as the seats lifting people to the top of the tower was ascending. This was the instant when they were at the top and about to be dropped for their brief trill ride.

Jill and I had a week in Scotland, staying at Seton Sands caravan site..

Lovely spot and whilst there saw our daughter and son in Law. Plus I had a day to myself and so hired a Royal Enfield Scram from Bikerbnb Adventures bike shop/dealer in Edinburgh.

Enjoyed 180(s)miles on that bike which is similar but different to my Himmy..!

That modest dance school on the edge of Siem Reap town produced top dancers through the years. Doing their stretching exercise combined with the form of Cambodian Classical Ballet, the novice was trying to imitate the senior pupil here. This was 2010.

My last visit, most of the best dancers had been poached from this troupe by the better funded outfits like Smile of Angkor or big hotel show with promise of better pay. Capitalism at its best of course, so the school has scramed for more trainees in 2012. It's a sign of producing good products I supposed.
