Christmas is just around the corner, but global climate change might be putting one the holiday’s most famous mascots in jeopardy. Reindeer, the giant, husky beasts that are fabled pull St. Nicholas’ flying […]

I got the Barbie Careers Scientist doll and was pleasantly surprised to see that her coat was a separate piece and the pattern on her top goes all the way around. Oh and this one didn't have glue in her head! See, Mattel you can do it!

My son has made a hole into the garden and filmed it for youtube :-)) Check it out:

From our trip to A Frican Lion Safari.

I wanted to look all smart n stuff and have why they were on 1 foot here in the description but it would appear that the scientists can't all agree on why that may be.

Some suggest that it's to prevent body heat loss.

Others said, it appears that flamingos share a primitive feature also seen in whales and dolphins: the ability to shut down half the brain while sleeping. That keeps the underwater animals from drowning while asleep. As flamingos go into this half-awake state, the natural reflex may be for one leg to be lifted towards the body as if it were gently lowering the body onto the ground. They further reported that the posture is likely an automatic response to getting drowsy. And, standing on one leg would keep them from falling over and drowning, because flamingos—unlike ducks, for instance—have a build that lets them easily stand on one leg without losing their balance or having to harshly angle their knee or ankle joints.

One other group simply suggested that it might be more comfortable. Way to put some effort in.

These particular flamingos looked more orange than pink. I always thought that they were all pink. Apparently our genius scientists agree that the colour is largely a result of the diet so there will be some variation.

Half Life Scientists. Pretty much all there is to say! ;D

Felixstowe Ferry, Suffolk

About to embark on the final year of her degree in ecology and conservation at Sussex University, Martha pauses to identify a mass of green and yellow just above the tide line. We were on the path between Felixstowe Ferry and Old Felixstowe. Felixstowe became Burnstowe in the M R James ghost story Oh whistle, and I'll come to you, my lad, which was set on the golf course behind her. Hard to imagine ghosts on such a sunny day.

Photography could motivate social scientists and philosophers to analyze ... my top ten impressions of a TIME / LIFE online gallery (in chronological order)

My latest illustration and also sized to be used as a desktop background (view all sizes up top). This was drawn in Illustrator while some of the lighting effects were done in Photoshop.

Pondering chemicals and their reactions while seated at the edge of darkness.

Ambient light provided by very large frosted windows, camera left. Softboxes there for the using, if you will.

Double page spread for New Scientist magazine for an article entitled "Think or Swim". Quite a diagrammatical approach, illustrating ways to reverse the Seas' relentless rise.

Steve Collins, a hippie NASA space scientist, loosely inspired by this photo:

hippynasaguy.tumblr.com/post/28840138764/forget-his-own-p...

Obviously, I took a few liberties. I gave him some excellent flared bell-bottoms, Birkenstock sandals, a somewhat stoned expression, and a celebratory doobie. Note the time on his watch is the time the Mars Curiosity Rover landed on Mars in 2012.

Made for the Plush Team space challenge.

Steve is made from 100% wool felt with a flannel button-down shirt, cotton bell bottoms, and wool Birkenstocks and watch. His hair and eyebrows are made from wool roving that I needle-felted in place. His doobie is also needle-felted wool. I cheated on his glasses--those are store bought. Steve stands approximately 16" tall and is stuffed with polyfil. His arms are jointed with safety joints for posability.

this is what you get when you browse the tag "scientist". pretty ironic, although it makes sense if you're a computer.

My wife defended her PhD thesis today - I had an occasion to shoot some commemorative photos.

On the right, the thesis supervisor; on the left, one of the reviewers. The newly-made Physical Doctor in the middle :)

This was lit with a single SB-24, camera right, 1/4th power, through brolly. The ambient was underexposed by about 2 steps. I sharpened a bit using high pass filter, and retouched a reflection of the brolly in the glass door on the right.
