Adirondack Scenic's excursion train to Big Moose heads north on the Mohawk Adirondack & Northern at Barneveld. A six-car train wouldn't ordinarily rate three units, but with leaves falling over the tracks in many places, the railroad added extra horsepower as insurance.
Playa de Cofete is what I humbly consider to be the most beautiful place around Fuerteventura Island and I'm both glad and surprise no one is here to agree with me.

The Scenic Eclipse 2 sailing from Kirkwall bound for Portree, Skye this evening. Some great light this evening as you can see with the sun lighting up the starboard side.
The predominant daisy is orange but this year yellow Senecio predominated in this field.
I have been away for a while,firstly in A Nature conservancy in Zimbabwe where I was asked to make images for a brochure. I then decided to have a short sabbatical from flickr while being busy on my Zimbabwe images. I have just returned from my annual week in Namaqualand and will be posting some images I have made there over the next while.

Protea is both the botanical name and the English common name of a genus of South African flowering plants, sometimes also called sugarbushes or fynbos. In local tradition, the protea flower represents change and hope. The extraordinary richness and diversity of species characteristic of the Cape flora are thought to be caused in part by the diverse landscape, where populations can become isolated from each other and in time develop into separate species. The main vectors responsible for the transfer of pollen in protea cultivation are birds, insects, and wind. Some Protea species exhibit both self-pollination and cross-pollination as a method of reproduction. Cross-pollination is preferred, though, as a method of reproduction because it provides genetic diversity in the population. When cultivating proteas, breeders use hand pollination as a controlled method to transfer pollen from one flower to another. Proteas usually flower during spring. The general structure of their flower heads consists of a mass of flowers on a woody receptacle. The ovary is protected by the receptacle, thus is not seen when looking at the flower, but the anthers are present at the top of the flower, which can then easily transfer the pollen to the vectors. 17529

It shows all the way to the souvenir shops at night.

Update: I'm sad to say this old barn was torn down by the owner in autumn of 2009 and a very plain looking new barn was built on the foundation. I was hoping to get a photo of the old barn in the snow, but alas, time waits for no man.
