On Wednesday, June 15th, 2016, SAS 7th grade students attended 5 W!ts as a field trip to Destiny Mall. The students took part in live action adventures where they had to work together as a team in order to be successful. The students participated in a total of 3 adventures, Espionage, Drago's Castle, and Deep Space. The students were immersed in a realistic hands-on experience. The computer controlled special effects and physical interactions put the students in the center of the action and it made them feel as if they were in a movie or video game. After going to 5 Wits the students enjoyed food in the food court. They chose from a variety of foods to eat and they sat together with each other. They enjoyed each other's company while discussing the results from their adventures. They had some pretty interesting conversations revolving around what they could have done different in the adventures, what types of food they were eating, and various mall experiences. It was a very fun adventure for everyone, even the teachers and chaperons. The students were well behaved and really used their minds and worked together to reach a common goal, which is what this experience was all about. This was definitely a trip to remember!

On Saturday, March 10, 2018, Syracuse Academy of Science advances to Class C state semifinals with 62-57 win over Bainbridge-Guilford.

It wasn’t easy. But it did feel inevitable.

It took 32 minutes of steely effort, but Syracuse Academy of Science used timely shooting and 20 points from Lyrik Jackson to defeat Bainbridge-Guilford 62-57 on Saturday at the SRC Arena in the Class C regional finals. The win advanced the #SASAtoms into the state semifinals, where they will take on Allegany-Limestone.

“We dug in. We just dug in,” SAS head coach Reginald Pickard said. “We knew that we had it in us we just had to let it come out.”

The Atoms needed all the grit they could muster in the fourth quarter. Trailing 45-44 to start the final frame, SAS put together an 11-2 run to start the fourth, creating a 55-47 advantage. Alexius Pierce, Freey Pleasants and Xyel Bradford all contributed to a run that Jackson capped with a three from the left side.

“That’s what coach teaches us,” Jackson said. “At times like that you can’t feel the pressure, we had to stay calm and be focused. So that’s what we did.”

Bainbridge-Guilford responded with a 8-0 run to even the score at 55, but Jackson, Pierce and Pleasants again combined for a 7-2 run that clinched the five-point win for #SASCS. All in all, the Atoms finished with five players scoring more than five points and three players in double figures.

“We have a great team, and it makes us hard to defend,” Pickard said. “It gives us a balanced attack, and we can spread it out.”

The late run was a product of that depth and a level of resilience after the Atoms had led by as much as nine in the first quarter, only to eventually trail by as much as six in the second.

“It’s a team effort,” Jackson said. “We were flat for a little, and we knew they were a good team. Coach just told us to run, and it was scrappy but it worked out.”

Jackson led the Atoms with 20 points, just missing a double-double with eight rebounds. Pleasants and Pierce added 12 apiece, and Bradford pitched in eight. Abigail Selfridge led all scorers with 23 for Bainbridge-Guilford.

Having unlocked enough of their potential to break into the state semifinals, Pickard said his girls are just getting started.

“Our motto is ‘let me be great.’ It’s about potential,” Pickard said. “It came from one of our coaches who lost her son, he always said, ‘let me be great.’ That’s what we did tonight and what we want to keep doing.”

The Atoms’ next opportunity comes on Friday when they meet Allegany-Limestone. That game is scheduled for an 11:45 a.m. tip at Hudson Valley Community College.

The De La Cruz and Bonilla families were victims of a house fire weeks before that claimed most of their possessions. This team effort created a great event that involved a car wash, barbecue, bounce house, bake sale, and more! SAS families from all three buildings helped out and participated in the festivities. An event such as this represents the best qualities of the Syracuse Academy of Science. Students, parent, teachers, and administrators who are here for one common goal, the success of our students and families!

We would like to thank those who donated items, money, and gift cards. We also would like to thank those who volunteered and helped before, during, and after the event. We would not be able to make this day happen without your help.

On Thursday, September 8th, 2016, the students at the Syracuse Academy of Science Middle School participated in our Olweus Anti-Bullying Kickoff. This research based program is intended to bring bullying out of the shadows and make it part of a central conversation to improve awareness. Classrooms circulated between three areas, classroom, the cafeteria for a guest speaker, and the gym. First, students participated in a classroom meeting with a team building activity that they roleplayed various situations that were designed to get students to move from being a bullying bystander to helping address and prevent it. In addition, students participated in a t-shirt design contest as they drew logos with anti-bullying messages. Lastly, Students participated in team building activities around the gym designed to build skills in communication, problem solving, and listening. Secondly, we had guest speakers, Jami Ryan and Maureen Foran-Mocete, and their team from the Child Advocacy Center, who presented to each grade level at Syracuse Academy Middle School. Their presentation focused on bullying prevention and how to turn bystanders into upstanders. The scholars were engaged and participated in answering and asking questions. Lastly, grade levels enjoyed different activities in the gym. The first activity focused on communication. Students worked in pairs to give verbal directions to a partner as they draw a simple image. The entire group shared their image to see which pair was able to communicate and recreate the image closest to the actual picture. The following three activities focused on trust, communication, and listening skills. Students work in pairs to guide their partner through a "mine field" while they are blind folded. Students had to get to the other side without hitting any of the items. A variation of this game required students to walk to a location blind folded and retrieve as many items as they could as their partner guided them verbally. Additionally, students worked in teams to get from one end of the gym to the other through a "sea of hot chocolate" as they stepped on "marshmallows". The last station was a photo booth where students formed many group poses with props to help send a "No Bullying" message. Students were good sports and enjoyed working in a variety of groups and pairs

On Thursday, June 14, 2018, the #SASCS Middle School was proud to host NASA Astronaut Dr. Don Thomas with the help of WonderWorks. Dr. Thomas was one of our nation's astronauts and has made several trips to space. He spoke to our students about his experiences in both traveling and working in space. Additionally, he highlighted the dedication and commitment that is required to reach our goals. We were very happy to have him speak to our students to keep their "eyes on the stars"! #SASAtoms #SASCS

On Wednesday, May 30, 2018, #SASAtoms and their families enjoyed a Luau themed Reading Night. Activities included: writing sight words in sand, Palm Tree letter sounds, reading by the pool, a board game, crafts, and a fun photo booth. Students enjoyed completing a scavenger hunt. Parents were able to learn about the importance of reading over the summer as well. Did you know your child can lose 22% (approx. 2 levels) of their reading level if they don't read over the summer?! Monday, March 19, 2018 was a special day at Syracuse Academy of Science for Lady Atoms Basketball Team. Whole school came together in the morning to celebrate these special student-athletes. The team accomplish a lot this year by winning the girls basketball program`s first Section III, Regional, and State Finalist Titles.

Athletic Department and the Lady Atoms thank a lot for the support we received from administration, staff, and students. Special thanks go to Coach Reginald Pickard and Donniesha Terry for their hard work and dedication.

On Wednesday, October 31, 2018, our #SASAtoms celebrated Fall in style. Our #SASCS classrooms were filled with laughter and treats, followed by a costume parade to spooky music around the school for their parents. If students didn't want to participate in the parade, they enjoyed an afternoon of fun in the gym with Mr. Albert! Some classes got a special visit and guest reading from Ms. Georgiadis who dressed as Camilla Cream from the book A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon.

On Thursday, December 7, 2016, the fourth graders went on an exciting and fun field trip to Ultimate Goal in Marcellus. The purpose of the field trip was to promote teamwork and positive interactions between students. The bonus was that it was just plain fun! Students played team sports like soccer and dodge ball. They also got to enjoy lunch all together with their teachers before heading back to school. Other patrons at Ultimate Goal were impressed with how well our students played together. They also loved our uniforms. The entire fourth grade enjoyed this field trip very much and came to school refreshed and ready to continue their hard work.

On Tuesday October 10th, 2017, SAS Kindergarteners in Room K-A, with their teachers Mrs. Garza and Mr. Skemaker, talk about the importance of kindness with Mr. Alamin Muhammad, founder of We Rise Above the Streets Recovery Outreach, Inc., a nonprofit organization serving the homeless in Syracuse. Putting concern for others into action, the children made bagged lunches for the homeless that included turkey sandwiches and paper hearts made by hand. Lunches are distributed each Saturday, and this batch is made with extra special care and attention.

On Thursday, November 15, 2018 our Kindergartners enjoyed a visit from Syracuse Common Councilor Susan Boyle. Ms. Boyle spoke with our students about the importance of voting, and letting your voice be heard. She followed up their conversation with the wonderful story, "Duck For President." #SASAtoms asked her questions about how she got into politics, and how voting works. Thank you Ms. Boyle for your visit and insight! We loved having you!

Students from the 6th and 7th grade pitted their youth and speed against the size and experience of the staff members. Although the staff members would prove victorious, the game was fun for all participants and spectators. Student Co-MVP's were named as Alexius Pierce and Zachary Allen. Staff Co-MVP's were named as Mr. Frisina and Mr. McGriff. This annual event is a crowd favorite and is a great way to kick off the holiday vacation! Have a safe holiday season Atoms! On Wednesday, October 24, 2018, the #SASCS high school community came together against bullying. Our #SASAtoms wore orange to represent their desire to be UNITED for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion in honor of anti-bullying day.

If you or someone you know is being bullied, reach out to your Dean of Students or a staff member at the school. #SASCS believes that no student should ever experience bullying, and creating a safe learning environment is one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

Students received awards marking their academic achievements during the first marking period this year. Students were called up by grade level to receive thier certificates of achievement. On Tuesday, March 27, 2018, SAS Middle School 7th graders visited the Rochester Institute of Technology RIT). On campus, students took an exploratory tour of several buildings, including, but not limited to, science, business, design, technology and engineering. Students ate lunch and participated in a hands-on group activity in which they built a tower out of paper, index cards and tape. The towers were to be designed with three things in mind: beauty, height and strength. First-place winners received RIT t-shirts and bragging rights. This visit is one among many that are part of our continual commitment to prepare our students for college education. Go ATOMS! #SASAtoms #SASCS

On Tuesday, October 30, The #SASCS Elementary October Student of the Month Ceremony awarded students for their trustworthiness. The students who received this award are honest and lead by example every day in their classrooms.

Our ceremony included dress down passes for students who received the most DOJO's and a fun PBIS game where a student from each kindergarten class dug through a spooky bucket of spaghetti to try and extract as many plastic eyeballs out as they could in 10 seconds. All three kindergarten classes were winners in this game, and earned a dress down pass for their whole class!

Terra Science and Education also joined us for our ceremony and handed out scholarships to our now 4th-grade students who performed at a level 3 or 4 on their New York State assessment. Great job, #SASAtoms!

It was a magic season for the Syracuse Academy of Science girls basketball team.

The #SASAtoms accomplished a lot - winning the program's first Section III title and advancing to the state final four.

SAS missed out on only one goal, as Section IX champion Millbrook bested the Atoms, 67-64, in overtime in the Class C state championship game at Hudson Valley Community College.

"We came up short, but we accomplished a whole lot," #SASCS coach Reggie Pickard said after his team came out on the short end of the 4-minute extra session, during which the Atoms led three times before surrendering the final four points. "Overtime game, we lost to a great team, a well-coached team."

SAS, who finish 19-5, lost despite a determined effort from senior Lyrik Jackson, who led the Atoms with 24 points and 15 rebounds, and junior Diamonne Harris, who added 23 points.

"She made a big difference," Pickard said.

Millbrook led the whole way, until there was just one minute left in regulation. A basket by Jackson tied the game at 54-54.

The Blazers pushed the lead back to four points with 34 seconds left, but SAS got a pair of free throws from Jackson to pull within two and 6-0 sophomore Erykah Pasha sent the game into overtime by converting two free throws with no time left on the clock after she was fouled on a put back attempt at the buzzer.

The Atoms led three times in the extra session - 60-59, 62-61 and 64-63 - before the Blazers got their final points from reserve junior forward Claire Martell, who hit a basket and two free throws in the final 45 seconds.

Pickard said he told his players to keep their heads high.

"I just told them they had no reason to hang their heads," said Pickard, who started the varsity program at SAS in 2010. "We set a goal at the beginning of the season. We reached our goal, but we just came up short."

Pickard said his all-state senior, Jackson, was all heart.

"She played hurt. She twisted her ankle early on. Her shoulder was still sore from the fall yesterday. She was banged up. But she gave it her all. She gave it her heart," he said.

The coach said he hoped the Atoms would be back, albeit probably in a higher classification. Nearly everyone associated with Section III basketball expects that SAS will be moved up in class by the competition committee.

This team effort created a great event that involved a car wash, barbecue, bounce house, bake sale, and more! SAS families from all three buildings helped out and participated in the festivities. An event such as this represents the best qualities of the Syracuse Academy of Science. Students, parent, teachers, and administrators who are here for one common goal, the success of our students and families!

On Wednesday, October 24, 2018, the #SASCS high school community came together against bullying. Our #SASAtoms wore orange to represent their desire to be UNITED for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion in honor of anti-bullying day.

If you or someone you know is being bullied, reach out to your Dean of Students or a staff member at the school. #SASCS believes that no student should ever experience bullying, and creating a safe learning environment is one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

On Thursday, November 9th, 2017, SAS high school is proud of all its students and the hard work they apply. Students received awards marking their academic achievements during the first marking period this year. Students were called up by grade level to receive thier certificates of achievement. Students were awarded for honor roll & high honor roll.

On Friday, September 22nd, our high school was visited by a group of athletes who are part of a leadership council at Syracuse University. Mr. Mark Trumbo, Syracuse University's Student-Athlete Engagement Coordinator, was accompanied by Alana O’Neill and Maddie Pack from the women’s soccer team; Hannah Dossett, Alexa Romero, and Samantha Fernandez from the women’s softball team; and Marcus Cunningham, David Lipka, and Stephen Rehfuss from the men’s lacrosse team. Mr. Trumbo and the athletes spent a few hours engaging groups of students in an interactive dialogue regarding the topics of leadership, accountability, responsibility, and various aspects of college life. Their message to our student body was inspiring, and the experience was a great way for our students to begin the new school year!

The #SASCS mentoring program recruits, trains, and matches high school students to mentor elementary students located at the Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School.

#SASAtom mentors spend at least one hour every two weeks with their student. This relationship helps youth build basic life skills, enhance their self-esteem and gives the youth ongoing encouragement to accomplish long-term goals for both the high school and elementary student.

This program is just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

On Friday, May 11, 2018, the #SASCS High School held its 2nd Annual Language and Culture Festival. Students developed culturally relevant projects, ranging from researching traditional clothing to cooking an authentic dish. When students learn about cultures from around the world, it widens their worldview and provides an opportunity to explore their differences and similarities. Students and families enjoyed learning about other countries while eating delicious food and watching dancing performances from Samba Laranja, The Syracuse University Brazilian Ensemble, and the Wachewa African Drumming and Dancing team. On Wednesday, October 5th, 2016 during first period, SAS Middle School participated in a class meeting revolving around the word "empathy". Students discussed with teachers and classmates what the definition of empathy is and what it means to them. They also reflected on times where they had someone treat them with empathy and when they have been empathetic to another individual. Lastly there was a discussion on when and who it is more difficult to show empathy for and why. This was the beginning of monthly meetings on anti-bullying topics.

On Tuesday, January 17th, 2017 the 7th grade students of the SAS Middle School went on a field trip to 5 Wits in Destiny USA. Students participated in three of the team building adventures the store had to offer. The Drago's Castle was navigated with some magical help from a fairy princess. The evil Cabal was defeated in the Espionage Adventure. The 7th graders confronted the evil Pharaoh in the Tomb Adventure. Students even explored the perils of Deep Space! The trip was capped with some lunch in the food court with friends and teachers!

Starting on Wednesday, November 8th, 2017, the 5th and 6th grade students of the Syracuse Academy of Science had the opportunity of traveling to the Everson Museum of Art, located in downtown Syracuse. The Everson is home to approximately 11,000 works of art such as paintings, sculptures, drawings, videos, graphics, and one of the largest holdings of international ceramics in the nation. The students were broken up into small groups and each group had a docent that took them on a tour of the museum, explaining the artwork and history of each piece Our SAS atoms made us very proud with their knowledge of art, their kindness, and ambition to learn.

On Saturday, November 10, 2018 the #SASCS Robotics Team attended the CNY Bridges Build 'Em & Bust 'Em competition at the MOST museum. #SASCS entered the tournament with three middle school and nine high school teams. According to their website The Central New York Bridges: Build ’Em and Bust ’Em bridge building competition gives students an opportunity to test their ability in engineering, teamwork, and design. Each team builds a balsa wood bridge to test the strength and durability of their design.

#SASAtoms received the First, Third and Fourth Place in Category 3 and First Place in Category 2 at the CNY Bridges Build 'Em & Bust 'Em competition. We also received the best name award in category 3.

SAS Elementary Winter Concert and Art Show

On January 12th, 2017, students in Kindergarten through fourth grade held their winter concert and art show. Each grade performed a number of songs they had been working on in music class. Most of the songs had a winter theme, while others taught about positive behaviors and relationships. Students also had their artwork displayed for everyone to admire. Everyone did a wonderful job! Thanks for the strong community support.

On Tuesday, November 13, 2018, the #SASCS Middle School assembled as a community to celebrate student achievement. #SASAtoms were honored for the following; Demonstrating Citizenship, Most Improved, Honor Roll, High Honor Roll, Student of the Month, Best Academic and our Golden Atom.

On Tuesday, March 27, 2018, SAS Middle School 7th graders visited the Rochester Institute of Technology RIT). On campus, students took an exploratory tour of several buildings, including, but not limited to, science, business, design, technology and engineering. Students ate lunch and participated in a hands-on group activity in which they built a tower out of paper, index cards and tape. The towers were to be designed with three things in mind: beauty, height and strength. First-place winners received RIT t-shirts and bragging rights. This visit is one among many that are part of our continual commitment to prepare our students for college education. Go ATOMS! #SASAtoms #SASCS

On Tuesday, October 30, The #SASCS Elementary October Student of the Month Ceremony awarded students for their trustworthiness. The students who received this award are honest and lead by example every day in their classrooms.

Our ceremony included dress down passes for students who received the most DOJO's and a fun PBIS game where a student from each kindergarten class dug through a spooky bucket of spaghetti to try and extract as many plastic eyeballs out as they could in 10 seconds. All three kindergarten classes were winners in this game, and earned a dress down pass for their whole class!

Terra Science and Education also joined us for our ceremony and handed out scholarships to our now 4th-grade students who performed at a level 3 or 4 on their New York State assessment. Great job, #SASAtoms!
