On Saturday, March 10, 2018, Syracuse Academy of Science advances to Class C state semifinals with 62-57 win over Bainbridge-Guilford.

It wasn’t easy. But it did feel inevitable.

It took 32 minutes of steely effort, but Syracuse Academy of Science used timely shooting and 20 points from Lyrik Jackson to defeat Bainbridge-Guilford 62-57 on Saturday at the SRC Arena in the Class C regional finals. The win advanced the #SASAtoms into the state semifinals, where they will take on Allegany-Limestone.

“We dug in. We just dug in,” SAS head coach Reginald Pickard said. “We knew that we had it in us we just had to let it come out.”

The Atoms needed all the grit they could muster in the fourth quarter. Trailing 45-44 to start the final frame, SAS put together an 11-2 run to start the fourth, creating a 55-47 advantage. Alexius Pierce, Freey Pleasants and Xyel Bradford all contributed to a run that Jackson capped with a three from the left side.

“That’s what coach teaches us,” Jackson said. “At times like that you can’t feel the pressure, we had to stay calm and be focused. So that’s what we did.”

Bainbridge-Guilford responded with a 8-0 run to even the score at 55, but Jackson, Pierce and Pleasants again combined for a 7-2 run that clinched the five-point win for #SASCS. All in all, the Atoms finished with five players scoring more than five points and three players in double figures.

“We have a great team, and it makes us hard to defend,” Pickard said. “It gives us a balanced attack, and we can spread it out.”

The late run was a product of that depth and a level of resilience after the Atoms had led by as much as nine in the first quarter, only to eventually trail by as much as six in the second.

“It’s a team effort,” Jackson said. “We were flat for a little, and we knew they were a good team. Coach just told us to run, and it was scrappy but it worked out.”

Jackson led the Atoms with 20 points, just missing a double-double with eight rebounds. Pleasants and Pierce added 12 apiece, and Bradford pitched in eight. Abigail Selfridge led all scorers with 23 for Bainbridge-Guilford.

Having unlocked enough of their potential to break into the state semifinals, Pickard said his girls are just getting started.

“Our motto is ‘let me be great.’ It’s about potential,” Pickard said. “It came from one of our coaches who lost her son, he always said, ‘let me be great.’ That’s what we did tonight and what we want to keep doing.”

The Atoms’ next opportunity comes on Friday when they meet Allegany-Limestone. That game is scheduled for an 11:45 a.m. tip at Hudson Valley Community College.

On Friday, May 11, 2018, the #SASCS High School held its 2nd Annual Language and Culture Festival. Students developed culturally relevant projects, ranging from researching traditional clothing to cooking an authentic dish. When students learn about cultures from around the world, it widens their worldview and provides an opportunity to explore their differences and similarities. Students and families enjoyed learning about other countries while eating delicious food and watching dancing performances from Samba Laranja, The Syracuse University Brazilian Ensemble, and the Wachewa African Drumming and Dancing team. Students participated in three of the team building adventures the store had to offer. The Drago's Castle was navigated with some magical help from a fairy princess. The evil Cabal was defeated in the Espionage Adventure. The 7th graders confronted the evil Pharaoh in the Tomb Adventure. Students even explored the perils of Deep Space! The trip was capped with some lunch in the food court with friends and teachers!

On Friday, September 16th, 2016, Miss Bittel and Miss Orioli's Student Leadership Club hosted their first Teen Center Night at the SAS Middle School from 5:30PM-7:00PM. Teen Center Night is an event for students to be able to come and hangout in a safe environment while doing interactive activities with their peers. Students were able to rotate from a wide variety of activities including, karaoke, basketball, coloring, watching a movie and playing video games. Pizza and drinks were provided! Students leadership uses Teen Center Night as a way to raise money for other events throughout the school year! Friday's event was hosted to raise money for our SAS family who lost their home to a house fire in August! Fun was had by all!

On Thursday, September 8th, 2016, the students at the Syracuse Academy of Science Middle School participated in our Olweus Anti-Bullying Kickoff. This research based program is intended to bring bullying out of the shadows and make it part of a central conversation to improve awareness. Classrooms circulated between three areas, classroom, the cafeteria for a guest speaker, and the gym. First, students participated in a classroom meeting with a team building activity that they roleplayed various situations that were designed to get students to move from being a bullying bystander to helping address and prevent it. In addition, students participated in a t-shirt design contest as they drew logos with anti-bullying messages. Lastly, Students participated in team building activities around the gym designed to build skills in communication, problem solving, and listening. Secondly, we had guest speakers, Jami Ryan and Maureen Foran-Mocete, and their team from the Child Advocacy Center, who presented to each grade level at Syracuse Academy Middle School. Their presentation focused on bullying prevention and how to turn bystanders into upstanders. The scholars were engaged and participated in answering and asking questions. Lastly, grade levels enjoyed different activities in the gym. The first activity focused on communication. Students worked in pairs to give verbal directions to a partner as they draw a simple image. The entire group shared their image to see which pair was able to communicate and recreate the image closest to the actual picture. The following three activities focused on trust, communication, and listening skills. Students work in pairs to guide their partner through a "mine field" while they are blind folded. Students had to get to the other side without hitting any of the items. A variation of this game required students to walk to a location blind folded and retrieve as many items as they could as their partner guided them verbally. Additionally, students worked in teams to get from one end of the gym to the other through a "sea of hot chocolate" as they stepped on "marshmallows". The last station was a photo booth where students formed many group poses with props to help send a "No Bullying" message. Students were good sports and enjoyed working in a variety of groups and pairs

The keynote speaker was Jennifer Sanders, award-winning news anchor for News Channel 9. Sanders touched on the importance of surrounding yourself with those who will elevate you and help you find a way to achieve your dreams. On Wednesday, October 31, 2018, our #SASAtoms celebrated Fall in style. Our #SASCS classrooms were filled with laughter and treats, followed by a costume parade to spooky music around the school for their parents. If students didn't want to participate in the parade, they enjoyed an afternoon of fun in the gym with Mr. Albert! Some classes got a special visit and guest reading from Ms. Georgiadis who dressed as Camilla Cream from the book A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon.

On Friday, March 16, 2018 the SAS Middle School welcomed an Irish Dance School to our building. The students were treated to a performance from the Rince Na Sonas School of Irish Dance. This is the third year that the school has visited us with their amazing dancers, many of which are headed to national and world competitions. Students and Staff were in awe of the talents demonstrated. Thank you Mrs. Hickey and Mrs. Greenwood and the parents who brought your students! This was a all-around amazing day! #SASAtoms #SASCS

On campus, students took an exploratory tour of several buildings, including, but not limited to, science, business, design, technology and engineering. Students ate lunch and participated in a hands-on group activity in which they built a tower out of paper, index cards and tape. The towers were to be designed with three things in mind: beauty, height and strength. First-place winners received RIT t-shirts and bragging rights. On Friday, December 23rd, 2016 the SAS Middle School held its 3rd Annual Staff vs. Students Basketball Game. Students from the 6th and 7th grade pitted their youth and speed against the size and experience of the staff members. Although the staff members would prove victorious, the game was fun for all participants and spectators. Student Co-MVP's were named as Alexius Pierce and Zachary Allen. Staff Co-MVP's were named as Mr. Frisina and Mr. McGriff. This annual event is a crowd favorite and is a great way to kick off the holiday vacation! Have a safe holiday season Atoms! On Wednesday, June 15th, 2016, SAS 7th grade students attended 5 W!ts as a field trip to Destiny Mall. The students took part in live action adventures where they had to work together as a team in order to be successful. The students participated in a total of 3 adventures, Espionage, Drago's Castle, and Deep Space. The students were immersed in a realistic hands-on experience. The computer controlled special effects and physical interactions put the students in the center of the action and it made them feel as if they were in a movie or video game. After going to 5 Wits the students enjoyed food in the food court. They chose from a variety of foods to eat and they sat together with each other. They enjoyed each other's company while discussing the results from their adventures. They had some pretty interesting conversations revolving around what they could have done different in the adventures, what types of food they were eating, and various mall experiences. It was a very fun adventure for everyone, even the teachers and chaperons. The students were well behaved and really used their minds and worked together to reach a common goal, which is what this experience was all about. This was definitely a trip to remember!

On Tuesday, November 8th 2016, 6th grade students from the SAS Middle School visited Howe Caverns. This amazing landmark, first discovered by Farmer Lester Howe, has regularly been the second most visited landmark in New York State. Students traveled over 150 feet undergroud to see the amazing limestone formations that have developed over the last two centuries. They were amazed by the many sights as they were directed by the great guides who accompanied all of the student groups. The trip was capped off by a stop to the Cavern Museum and Gift Shop! This great trip was enjoyed by all!

Throughout the week of February 26, 2018, SASCS Elementary School celebrated Read Across America and Dr. Seuss' birthday. Students were very creative with their silly socks, wacky-hair day and funny-hat day. Older students performed a reader's theater for first-grade classes. Many classrooms celebrated reading Dr. Seuss books, and students competed in a reading challenge by logging all the pages they read over Winter Break. What a great way to promote reading and creativity at school!

On Friday, April 20, 2018, #SAS high school students kicked off spring break with a talent show and student olympics.

Starting on Wednesday, November 8th, 2017, the 5th and 6th grade students of the Syracuse Academy of Science had the opportunity of traveling to the Everson Museum of Art, located in downtown Syracuse. The Everson is home to approximately 11,000 works of art such as paintings, sculptures, drawings, videos, graphics, and one of the largest holdings of international ceramics in the nation. The students were broken up into small groups and each group had a docent that took them on a tour of the museum, explaining the artwork and history of each piece Our SAS atoms made us very proud with their knowledge of art, their kindness, and ambition to learn.

On Thursday, May 31, 2018, seniors at #SASCS took part in our rich tradition of the "Senior Walk." Our graduating seniors don their cap and gown and walk the halls with our elementary students. Seniors have the opportunity to reflect on their time at #SASCS, while also inspiring the little ones who still have a ways to go before they are ready to graduate.

Once the walk was over, our #SASCS seniors celebrated the end of their time at #SASCS at Green Lakes State Park to wrap up the year in style. Go Atoms, and we will see you at graduation! #SASCS #SASAtoms

The #SASCS mentoring program recruits, trains, and matches high school students to mentor elementary students located at the Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School.

#SASAtom mentors spend at least one hour every two weeks with their student. This relationship helps youth build basic life skills, enhance their self-esteem and gives the youth ongoing encouragement to accomplish long-term goals for both the high school and elementary student.

This program is just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

On Wednesday, October 24, 2018, #SASAtoms toured Fort Rickey Children's Discover Zoo, in Rome, NY. The zoo provided an ice cream cone full of animal food, and #SASAtoms took bits at a time in their hand to feed the deer and sheep through the fence and then fed them the ice cream cone. After stepping into the enclosure, #SASAtoms were able to pet the deer and hug the sheep. Our #SASAtoms were then taken to the dock and were able to feed the fish and ducks, and they loved it!

We then took a wagon ride that drove us around the zoo, where we were able to see all of the animals in their enclosures. After lunch, we were let into the “maternity pen” where the students were able to pet and hold baby goats and their mothers. Following the maternity pen, we went and played in the ball pit. We aren't sure who had more fun, the students or the chaperones! These visits to local zoo's help expose our #SASAtoms to diverse wildlife and are just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

Additionally, students worked in teams to get from one end of the gym to the other through a "sea of hot chocolate" as they stepped on "marshmallows". The last station was a photo booth where students formed many group poses with props to help send a "No Bullying" message. Students were good sports and enjoyed working in a variety of groups and pairs

The #SASCS mentoring program recruits, trains, and matches high school students to mentor elementary students located at the Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School.

#SASAtom mentors spend at least one hour every two weeks with their student. This relationship helps youth build basic life skills, enhance their self-esteem and gives the youth ongoing encouragement to accomplish long-term goals for both the high school and elementary student.

This program is just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

On Tuesday, November 29th, 2016 the students of the SAS Middle school hosted a special guest speaker from the SAS staff. Jontae Brown works not only as our amazing custodian at the middle school, but also proudly serves as a sergeant in the United States Marines. Sergeant Brown has served in the Marines since 2010 and has been stationed in places such as Camp Lejeune in North Carolina and Marine Corps Base Camp Smedley D. Butler in Okinawa, Japan. He spoke to our students about the history and the role of the Marine Corps in the defense of America and other nations. Students enjoyed the videos that Sergeant Brown brought to detail the boot camp experience that molds this elite force. We thank Sergeant Brown and your fellow Marines for their effort and sacrifice in preserving our freedom!

On Thursday, June 21, 2018, the Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School celebrated it's twelfth annual commencement at the Crouse Hinds Theatre Civic Center in Syracuse, New York. The keynote speaker was Jennifer Sanders, award-winning news anchor for News Channel 9. Sanders touched on the importance of surrounding yourself with those who will elevate you and help you find a way to achieve your dreams. Climbing high and sliding fast are easier than ever for students at SASCS Elementary School on South Salina Street, with the addition of a new playground. The colorful equipment echoes the school’s uniform colors and offers more space for free-time adventures than the previous playground, which is still available for students to use. Tall poles capped with palm fronds add a tropical feel to the site, which features plenty of wood chips for safe landings, daring rescues and darting about.

On Wednesday, October 5th, 2016 during first period, SAS Middle School participated in a class meeting revolving around the word "empathy". Students discussed with teachers and classmates what the definition of empathy is and what it means to them. They also reflected on times where they had someone treat them with empathy and when they have been empathetic to another individual. Lastly there was a discussion on when and who it is more difficult to show empathy for and why. This was the beginning of monthly meetings on anti-bullying topics.

On Friday, December 23rd, 2016 the SAS Middle School held its 3rd Annual Staff vs. Students Basketball Game. Students from the 6th and 7th grade pitted their youth and speed against the size and experience of the staff members. Although the staff members would prove victorious, the game was fun for all participants and spectators. Student Co-MVP's were named as Alexius Pierce and Zachary Allen. Staff Co-MVP's were named as Mr. Frisina and Mr. McGriff. This annual event is a crowd favorite and is a great way to kick off the holiday vacation! Have a safe holiday season Atoms! At the onset of the recent 2nd Annual Jazz Festival, SAS students put on a show of their own. They eagerly displayed some of the mechanical-engineering skills acquired through school courses and clubs centered on STEM and robotics education. Guests at the event had the opportunity to meet students who built their own robots and enthusiastically explained how they function. The fundraiser was a special evening of great food and great music, with dinner by Carrabbas Italian Grill and jazz by world-renowned bass guitarist Gerald Veasley, accompanied by several local musical artists, including vocalist Danielle Evans, saxophonist Malik Clanton, keyboard player Daniel Pugh and drummer Jose Varona. The SAS high school band led the musical portion of the event, with Believer by Imagine Dragons, arranged by Kelly and Carlson, under the direction of music teacher Ms. Lexi Carlson. We thank everyone who made this special event possible—sponsors, parents, students and staff—and we look forward to next year’s event!

On Wednesday September 6th, Smiling students and eager parents meet enthusiastic teachers for the first time as the beginning of innovative education gets underway at Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship Charter School (SASCCS). The K-2 school is dedicated to helping all students reach their potential by laying a strong academic and civic foundation for success in college, career and citizenship in years to come. Monday, March 19, 2018 was a special day at Syracuse Academy of Science for Lady Atoms Basketball Team. Whole school came together in the morning to celebrate these special student-athletes. The team accomplish a lot this year by winning the girls basketball program`s first Section III, Regional, and State Finalist Titles.

Athletic Department and the Lady Atoms thank a lot for the support we received from administration, staff, and students. Special thanks go to Coach Reginald Pickard and Donniesha Terry for their hard work and dedication.

On Wednesday, June 15th, 2016, SAS 7th grade students attended 5 W!ts as a field trip to Destiny Mall. The students took part in live action adventures where they had to work together as a team in order to be successful. The students participated in a total of 3 adventures, Espionage, Drago's Castle, and Deep Space. The students were immersed in a realistic hands-on experience. The computer controlled special effects and physical interactions put the students in the center of the action and it made them feel as if they were in a movie or video game. After going to 5 Wits the students enjoyed food in the food court. They chose from a variety of foods to eat and they sat together with each other. They enjoyed each other's company while discussing the results from their adventures. They had some pretty interesting conversations revolving around what they could have done different in the adventures, what types of food they were eating, and various mall experiences. It was a very fun adventure for everyone, even the teachers and chaperons. The students were well behaved and really used their minds and worked together to reach a common goal, which is what this experience was all about. This was definitely a trip to remember!
