On Monday, October 31st, 2016, 6th grade students in Miss Bittel's social studies class participated in a cultural lesson on the art of Salsa dancing. The presentation was given by one of our 6th grade student's parents, Odalas and Alberto Gaskins. The couple showed the students some video clips of professional salsa dancers before performing a couple's dance for the students. After their demonstration, students were taught 2 main salsa dance steps and then spent the remainder of the time dancing the Salsa in the gym!

On Friday, September 22nd, our high school was visited by a group of athletes who are part of a leadership council at Syracuse University. Mr. Mark Trumbo, Syracuse University's Student-Athlete Engagement Coordinator, was accompanied by Alana O’Neill and Maddie Pack from the women’s soccer team; Hannah Dossett, Alexa Romero, and Samantha Fernandez from the women’s softball team; and Marcus Cunningham, David Lipka, and Stephen Rehfuss from the men’s lacrosse team. Mr. Trumbo and the athletes spent a few hours engaging groups of students in an interactive dialogue regarding the topics of leadership, accountability, responsibility, and various aspects of college life. Their message to our student body was inspiring, and the experience was a great way for our students to begin the new school year!

On Tuesday, February 7th, 2017, a group of staff, parents, and students from the SAS family went to Albany for the NYS Charter School Advocacy Day. The intention of this event was to showcase SAS and other charters in NYS and to help build new relationships with those that create the laws that govern our schools. In addition, We sought to enhance the long-standing partnerships with the many lawmakers that have supported the amazing work done at SAS and other charters. The group was led by our amazing administration team that was represented by Dr. Kocak (School Director), Mr. Cetin (Assistant Director), Mr. Yavuz (Dean of the Middle School) and Mrs. Smith (Dean of the Elementary School). They were joined by nine of our dedicated parent partners with right students ranging from grades 2 through 10 as well as Mr. Carter a teacher from the Middle School.

 

What was our goal? Well, outside of the demonstration of what makes SAS great, we sought to describe what equitable funding could mean to their schools and futures! Many do not realize that charter schools only receive a fraction per pupil of what traditional public schools receive. As the per student amounts of aid have risen for traditional public schools, charter school funding have been frozen for many years. These issues combined with the unsubsidized building costs that charter school face diminish our potential. In addition, the state cap on charter enrollment makes it difficult for us to share our strengths with the community. Even with these circumstances, the accomplishments of SAS are amazing. Our graduation, college readiness, and college acceptance rates are things that any school should be proud of.

 

Our group met directly with Assemblywoman Pamela Hunter and Assemblyman William Magnarelli. The senior staff of Senator John Defrancisco and Senator Valesky met with our group to hear our concerns as these representatives were in chamber. These dedicated public servants listened to our staff, parents, and students talk about what it is to be at SAS and how our student-centered approach has yielded great results! As more and more lawmakers see what we have accomplished, we hope to make funding for SAS equitable with traditional public schools and present even more opportunities for our amazing students to shine bright! On Thursday, June 16th, 2016 sixty students from the SAS Middle School took a year-ending field trip to the Seabreeze Waterpark in Rochester, New York. Students were able to cut loose enjoy the many attractions, food options, and their wonderful friends. A great day of weather allowed students to have a wonderful field trip to cap of their year. Thank you to all staff and parents that chaperoned the event!

On Friday, June 10th, 2016 the SAS Middle School celebrated its very first International Day. Twelve teams of students created presentations of various countries and cultures such as Cuba, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and many Native American tribes. Many of our wonderful parent supported the event by bringing in food such as wontons, plantains, rice and beans, and Irish potato pancakes. The event was capped by the wonderful performances of the Talent Club who used their amazing skills to bring French ballet, Spanish music, and African dancing to the event. One of the many aspects that make SAS an amazing school is the many different cultures that we have in our study body. Our differences are what make us strong! Go ATOMS!

The De La Cruz and Bonilla families were victims of a house fire weeks before that claimed most of their possessions. This team effort created a great event that involved a car wash, barbecue, bounce house, bake sale, and more! SAS families from all three buildings helped out and participated in the festivities. An event such as this represents the best qualities of the Syracuse Academy of Science. Students, parent, teachers, and administrators who are here for one common goal, the success of our students and families!

On Sunday, December 3, 2017, the SAS High School robotics team attended the FIRST® Tech Challenge (FTC) robotics competition qualifier at Sauquoit High School in Sauquoit, NY. FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded in 1989 by inventor Dean Kamen. The nonprofit public charity inspires young people to become innovative science and technology leaders by engaging in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, technology, math and engineering (STEM) skills. In turn, those skills help to build self-confidence and foster communication and leadership skills.

 

Eleven members of the SAS Atoms robotics team attended the competition. The team became the 4th alliance captain and, after semi-finals selections, the 3rd alliance captain. Ultimately, the robotics team received the Rockwell Collins Innovate Award and advanced to the FTC Super Regional Competition, which will be held January 14, 2018, at SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Utica.

 

Congratulations to the entire SAS Atoms team. Led by Mr. Zengin and Mr. Altindis, the team includes the following students: Lalita Dahal, Umesh Dahal, Karl Russo, Jade Regner, Brenden Reilly, Joseph Capra, Huda Ali, Zakaria Ali, Natalia Amado, Abdullah Cetin, Ali Barbour, Tahirah Abdul-Qadir, Michael Scheer and Benjamin Cameron.

On Friday, October 21st, 2016, the SAS Middle School hosted a Girl's Empowerment Night. Fifth, sixth, and seventh grade girls came out to learn how to be strong, confident young women, to empower themselves, and each other, and to enjoy a night of fun activities. Among the activities included, dinner, pillow case decorating, nail painting, make-up, games, dancing, singing, and a movie with popcorn. Additionally, two guest speakers came to inspire our female students, Ms. Diamond from the Boys and Girls Club, and Ms. Pearl from McMahon/ Ryan Child Advocacy Center. Thank you to all that volunteered to make this amazing event happen!

On Wednesday, October 24, 2018, #SASAtoms toured Fort Rickey Children's Discover Zoo, in Rome, NY. The zoo provided an ice cream cone full of animal food, and #SASAtoms took bits at a time in their hand to feed the deer and sheep through the fence and then fed them the ice cream cone. After stepping into the enclosure, #SASAtoms were able to pet the deer and hug the sheep. Our #SASAtoms were then taken to the dock and were able to feed the fish and ducks, and they loved it!

 

We then took a wagon ride that drove us around the zoo, where we were able to see all of the animals in their enclosures. After lunch, we were let into the “maternity pen” where the students were able to pet and hold baby goats and their mothers. Following the maternity pen, we went and played in the ball pit. We aren't sure who had more fun, the students or the chaperones! These visits to local zoo's help expose our #SASAtoms to diverse wildlife and are just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

On Wednesday, March 8th, 2017, the Middle School held its 2016-2017 Winter Convert & Art Show. Under the direction of Mrs. Christina Cleason, our students came together to put on an amazing musical performance! Our beginner band made their musical debut, sharing two short songs with our audience members, "A Mozart Melody" and "Aura Lee". Our advanced band shared one musical selection titled "More Cowbell". Our theme for this winter's chorus concert was focused on the idea of "Diversity and Acceptance". Our student body came together to celebrate the beauty in our differences and sings songs about overcoming the odds to fulfill your dreams. Our song selections included "Brave" by Sara Bareilles, "You'll Be Okay" by A Great Big World, "The Great Unknown" by Jukebox the Ghost, "Change Your Life" by Little Mix, and "Am I Wrong" by Nico & Vinz. This concert also featured a performance by two of our 6th grade classes, celebrating the culture, music, and customs from Spain. This performance was a part of our year long cultural project designed to help our classrooms become more culturally responsive, assist our students in becoming more accepting of others, and encourage parent and family presence in our school. Overall, our concert was a HUGE success! Our Art students displayed their prowess thanks to the great talents of our Art teacher, Ms. Brett. Students put on a wonderful art exhibition full of lively colors and artistic talent. The students showcased their knowledge of the 7 Elements of Art and the 7 Principles of Design using several techniques such as drawing, painting, print making, paper art, mixed media, and even raw nature. A school wide collaboration drawing that represents both diversity and unity was also on display. We are extremely proud of our student's accomplishments in art and music that are led by these amazing educators! Keep shining bright Atoms!

On Thursday, September 8th, 2016, the students at the Syracuse Academy of Science Middle School participated in our Olweus Anti-Bullying Kickoff. This research based program is intended to bring bullying out of the shadows and make it part of a central conversation to improve awareness. Classrooms circulated between three areas, classroom, the cafeteria for a guest speaker, and the gym. First, students participated in a classroom meeting with a team building activity that they roleplayed various situations that were designed to get students to move from being a bullying bystander to helping address and prevent it. In addition, students participated in a t-shirt design contest as they drew logos with anti-bullying messages. Lastly, Students participated in team building activities around the gym designed to build skills in communication, problem solving, and listening. Secondly, we had guest speakers, Jami Ryan and Maureen Foran-Mocete, and their team from the Child Advocacy Center, who presented to each grade level at Syracuse Academy Middle School. Their presentation focused on bullying prevention and how to turn bystanders into upstanders. The scholars were engaged and participated in answering and asking questions. Lastly, grade levels enjoyed different activities in the gym. The first activity focused on communication. Students worked in pairs to give verbal directions to a partner as they draw a simple image. The entire group shared their image to see which pair was able to communicate and recreate the image closest to the actual picture. The following three activities focused on trust, communication, and listening skills. Students work in pairs to guide their partner through a "mine field" while they are blind folded. Students had to get to the other side without hitting any of the items. A variation of this game required students to walk to a location blind folded and retrieve as many items as they could as their partner guided them verbally. Additionally, students worked in teams to get from one end of the gym to the other through a "sea of hot chocolate" as they stepped on "marshmallows". The last station was a photo booth where students formed many group poses with props to help send a "No Bullying" message. Students were good sports and enjoyed working in a variety of groups and pairs

On Friday, March 16, 2018 the SAS Middle School welcomed an Irish Dance School to our building. The students were treated to a performance from the Rince Na Sonas School of Irish Dance. This is the third year that the school has visited us with their amazing dancers, many of which are headed to national and world competitions. Students and Staff were in awe of the talents demonstrated. Thank you Mrs. Hickey and Mrs. Greenwood and the parents who brought your students! This was a all-around amazing day! #SASAtoms #SASCS

On Tuesday, March 27, 2018, to conclude our speaker series of the female leadership panel, we welcomed Jessica Graham from Infinity Northeast, Inc., Natalie Stetson from the Erie Canal Museum and Maggie Foster of the Mundy branch library. All three speakers provided our 8th and 9th grade girls with personal insight about education, jobs and struggles that led them down their own career paths. The 8th and 9th grade boys met with Vincent Love from 100 Black Men to help them navigate career direction, make goals and work through struggles. On Thursday, November 16th, 2017, SAS high school students got a chance to meet representatives from many diverse professions at Career Day. Ever wondered what it takes to be an Air Traffic Controller? How about an Architect or a Music Producer? About a dozen volunteers held presentations in different classrooms so students could learn about each profession’s day-to-day tasks and the requirements needed to pursue each career. Students had the opportunity to ask questions of the presenters to learn more about what they do and the rewards and challenges of pursuing specific career paths. We are grateful to have had so many volunteers visit to talk to our students, including the following:

On Thursday, May 31, 2018, seniors at #SASCS took part in our rich tradition of the "Senior Walk." Our graduating seniors don their cap and gown and walk the halls with our elementary students. Seniors have the opportunity to reflect on their time at #SASCS, while also inspiring the little ones who still have a ways to go before they are ready to graduate.

Once the walk was over, our #SASCS seniors celebrated the end of their time at #SASCS at Green Lakes State Park to wrap up the year in style. Go Atoms, and we will see you at graduation! #SASCS #SASAtoms

On Friday, February 16th, 2018, SAS Middle School held activity stations in honor of Black History Month! Students wrote out "I have a dream" clouds, listened to informational videos, did a gallery walk, filled out scavenger hunts, took pictures at the photo booth, did matching games and collages and played "Spike Ball." Students were able to gain factual information on some of the most influential African Americans who fought for the rights, freedoms and respect of African American people. Students really seemed to enjoy all of the activities provided!

Monday, March 19, 2018 was a special day at Syracuse Academy of Science for Lady Atoms Basketball Team. Whole school came together in the morning to celebrate these special student-athletes. The team accomplish a lot this year by winning the girls basketball program`s first Section III, Regional, and State Finalist Titles.

 

Athletic Department and the Lady Atoms thank a lot for the support we received from administration, staff, and students. Special thanks go to Coach Reginald Pickard and Donniesha Terry for their hard work and dedication.

Students participated in a variety of events and activities including basketball, dodge ball, and soccer. Picnic lunch was provided to all students with ice cream and cookie treats to cap of the meal. This was a wonderful event to finish off the school year. The entire group shared their image to see which pair was able to communicate and recreate the image closest to the actual picture. The following three activities focused on trust, communication, and listening skills. Students work in pairs to guide their partner through a "mine field" while they are blind folded. Students had to get to the other side without hitting any of the items. A variation of this game required students to walk to a location blind folded and retrieve as many items as they could as their partner guided them verbally. Additionally, students worked in teams to get from one end of the gym to the other through a "sea of hot chocolate" as they stepped on "marshmallows". The last station was a photo booth where students formed many group poses with props to help send a "No Bullying" message. On Friday, February 17th, 2017 the SAS Middle School held its Black History Month and January Student of the Month Assembly. The event was kicked off by the wonderful projects of our students. Volunteer presenters included 7th graders who dressed up as many of the iconic individuals who have furthered the cause of African Americans in this country. Students represented and presented on Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, Jackie Robinson, and more! Our wonderful 5th graders also presented their research. Amazing individuals such as Former President Barack Obama, Syracuse Chief of Police Frank Fowler, Pele, Maya Angelou, and others were highlighted in the 5th grade. Following these students, the various Student of the Month awards were presented. These awards are given to students for their all-around excellence in academics and/or citizenship. We are proud of the work that our ATOMS are accomplishing in the second half of the school year. Keep up the great work!

On Friday, September 16th, 2016, Miss Bittel and Miss Orioli's Student Leadership Club hosted their first Teen Center Night at the SAS Middle School from 5:30PM-7:00PM. Teen Center Night is an event for students to be able to come and hangout in a safe environment while doing interactive activities with their peers. Students were able to rotate from a wide variety of activities including, karaoke, basketball, coloring, watching a movie and playing video games. Pizza and drinks were provided! Students leadership uses Teen Center Night as a way to raise money for other events throughout the school year! Friday's event was hosted to raise money for our SAS family who lost their home to a house fire in August! Fun was had by all!

On Saturday, September 24th, 2016, all three SAS buildings came together in the high school parking lot for a benefit to help two of our amazing families. The De La Cruz and Bonilla families were victims of a house fire weeks before that claimed most of their possessions. This team effort created a great event that involved a car wash, barbecue, bounce house, bake sale, and more! SAS families from all three buildings helped out and participated in the festivities. An event such as this represents the best qualities of the Syracuse Academy of Science. Students, parent, teachers, and administrators who are here for one common goal, the success of our students and families!

 

We would like to thank those who donated items, money, and gift cards. We also would like to thank those who volunteered and helped before, during, and after the event. We would not be able to make this day happen without your help.

On Tuesday, June 14th, 2016 our middle school students, under the direction of Ms. Christina Farruggio, came together to share a wonderful evening of music with their family members. Our theme for our spring concert centered around looking toward a brighter tomorrow, emphasizing the idea that our students have bright futures, with all the world has to offer right at their fingertips. Our ATOMS showcased their talent through a spirited performance and all who attended thoroughly enjoyed the evening!

On Friday, May 11, 2018, the #SASCS High School held its 2nd Annual Language and Culture Festival. Students developed culturally relevant projects, ranging from researching traditional clothing to cooking an authentic dish. When students learn about cultures from around the world, it widens their worldview and provides an opportunity to explore their differences and similarities. Students and families enjoyed learning about other countries while eating delicious food and watching dancing performances from Samba Laranja, The Syracuse University Brazilian Ensemble, and the Wachewa African Drumming and Dancing team. On Tuesday, February 7th, 2017, a group of staff, parents, and students from the SAS family went to Albany for the NYS Charter School Advocacy Day. The intention of this event was to showcase SAS and other charters in NYS and to help build new relationships with those that create the laws that govern our schools. In addition, We sought to enhance the long-standing partnerships with the many lawmakers that have supported the amazing work done at SAS and other charters. The group was led by our amazing administration team that was represented by Dr. Kocak (School Director), Mr. Cetin (Assistant Director), Mr. Yavuz (Dean of the Middle School) and Mrs. Smith (Dean of the Elementary School). They were joined by nine of our dedicated parent partners with right students ranging from grades 2 through 10 as well as Mr. Carter a teacher from the Middle School.

 

What was our goal? Well, outside of the demonstration of what makes SAS great, we sought to describe what equitable funding could mean to their schools and futures! Many do not realize that charter schools only receive a fraction per pupil of what traditional public schools receive. As the per student amounts of aid have risen for traditional public schools, charter school funding have been frozen for many years. These issues combined with the unsubsidized building costs that charter school face diminish our potential. In addition, the state cap on charter enrollment makes it difficult for us to share our strengths with the community. Even with these circumstances, the accomplishments of SAS are amazing. Our graduation, college readiness, and college acceptance rates are things that any school should be proud of.

 

Our group met directly with Assemblywoman Pamela Hunter and Assemblyman William Magnarelli. The senior staff of Senator John Defrancisco and Senator Valesky met with our group to hear our concerns as these representatives were in chamber. These dedicated public servants listened to our staff, parents, and students talk about what it is to be at SAS and how our student-centered approach has yielded great results! As more and more lawmakers see what we have accomplished, we hope to make funding for SAS equitable with traditional public schools and present even more opportunities for our amazing students to shine bright! Go ATOMS!

On Friday, April 20, 2018, #SAS high school students kicked off spring break with a talent show and student olympics.

On Monday, 22 and Tuesday, October 23, 2018, #SASCS elementary first graders trekked to Dutch Hill Maple Farms in Tully, NY where #SASAtoms learned about the process of making maple syrup. Students began their morning with a hike up to the sugar maple trees. From there, they learned about tapping trees for sap and were able to explore the machines that help with the syrup making process. The field trip ended with maple syrup and maple cream taste testing, and #SASAtoms were then given a jug of syrup to take home. (Thank you, Dutch Hill!)

 

Some of the takeaways students had from the field trip were that 6,000 maple trees are used to make syrup per season, and it takes 40 gallons of sap to make only 1 gallon of maple syrup! Teaching our #SASAtoms about the food system is just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.
