On Saturday, September 24th, 2016, all three SAS buildings came together in the high school parking lot for a benefit to help two of our amazing families. The De La Cruz and Bonilla families were victims of a house fire weeks before that claimed most of their possessions. This team effort created a great event that involved a car wash, barbecue, bounce house, bake sale, and more! SAS families from all three buildings helped out and participated in the festivities. An event such as this represents the best qualities of the Syracuse Academy of Science. Students, parent, teachers, and administrators who are here for one common goal, the success of our students and families!

On Friday, April 20, 2018, #SAS high school students kicked off spring break with a talent show and student olympics.

On Friday, May 11, 2018, the #SASCS High School held its 2nd Annual Language and Culture Festival. Students developed culturally relevant projects, ranging from researching traditional clothing to cooking an authentic dish. When students learn about cultures from around the world, it widens their worldview and provides an opportunity to explore their differences and similarities. Students and families enjoyed learning about other countries while eating delicious food and watching dancing performances from Samba Laranja, The Syracuse University Brazilian Ensemble, and the Wachewa African Drumming and Dancing team. On Thursday, May 31, 2018, seniors at #SASCS took part in our rich tradition of the "Senior Walk." Our graduating seniors don their cap and gown and walk the halls with our elementary students. Seniors have the opportunity to reflect on their time at #SASCS, while also inspiring the little ones who still have a ways to go before they are ready to graduate.

Once the walk was over, our #SASCS seniors celebrated the end of their time at #SASCS at Green Lakes State Park to wrap up the year in style. Go Atoms, and we will see you at graduation! #SASCS #SASAtoms

On Friday, December 23rd, 2016 the SAS Middle School held its 3rd Annual Staff vs. Students Basketball Game. Students from the 6th and 7th grade pitted their youth and speed against the size and experience of the staff members. Although the staff members would prove victorious, the game was fun for all participants and spectators. Student Co-MVP's were named as Alexius Pierce and Zachary Allen. Staff Co-MVP's were named as Mr. Frisina and Mr. McGriff. This annual event is a crowd favorite and is a great way to kick off the holiday vacation! Have a safe holiday season Atoms! This research based program is intended to bring bullying out of the shadows and make it part of a central conversation to improve awareness. Classrooms circulated between three areas, classroom, the cafeteria for a guest speaker, and the gym. First, students participated in a classroom meeting with a team building activity that they roleplayed various situations that were designed to get students to move from being a bullying bystander to helping address and prevent it. In addition, students participated in a t-shirt design contest as they drew logos with anti-bullying messages. Lastly, Students participated in team building activities around the gym designed to build skills in communication, problem solving, and listening. Secondly, we had guest speakers, Jami Ryan and Maureen Foran-Mocete, and their team from the Child Advocacy Center, who presented to each grade level at Syracuse Academy Middle School. Their presentation focused on bullying prevention and how to turn bystanders into upstanders. The scholars were engaged and participated in answering and asking questions. Lastly, grade levels enjoyed different activities in the gym. The first activity focused on communication. Students worked in pairs to give verbal directions to a partner as they draw a simple image. The entire group shared their image to see which pair was able to communicate and recreate the image closest to the actual picture. The following three activities focused on trust, communication, and listening skills. Students work in pairs to guide their partner through a "mine field" while they are blind folded. Students had to get to the other side without hitting any of the items. A variation of this game required students to walk to a location blind folded and retrieve as many items as they could as their partner guided them verbally. Additionally, students worked in teams to get from one end of the gym to the other through a "sea of hot chocolate" as they stepped on "marshmallows". The last station was a photo booth where students formed many group poses with props to help send a "No Bullying" message. Students were good sports and enjoyed working in a variety of groups and pairs

On Tuesday, October 30, The #SASCS Elementary October Student of the Month Ceremony awarded students for their trustworthiness. The students who received this award are honest and lead by example every day in their classrooms.

Our ceremony included dress down passes for students who received the most DOJO's and a fun PBIS game where a student from each kindergarten class dug through a spooky bucket of spaghetti to try and extract as many plastic eyeballs out as they could in 10 seconds. All three kindergarten classes were winners in this game, and earned a dress down pass for their whole class!

Terra Science and Education also joined us for our ceremony and handed out scholarships to our now 4th-grade students who performed at a level 3 or 4 on their New York State assessment. Great job, #SASAtoms!

On Friday, September 22nd, our high school was visited by a group of athletes who are part of a leadership council at Syracuse University. Mr. Mark Trumbo, Syracuse University's Student-Athlete Engagement Coordinator, was accompanied by Alana O’Neill and Maddie Pack from the women’s soccer team; Hannah Dossett, Alexa Romero, and Samantha Fernandez from the women’s softball team; and Marcus Cunningham, David Lipka, and Stephen Rehfuss from the men’s lacrosse team. Mr. Trumbo and the athletes spent a few hours engaging groups of students in an interactive dialogue regarding the topics of leadership, accountability, responsibility, and various aspects of college life. Their message to our student body was inspiring, and the experience was a great way for our students to begin the new school year!

Volunteer presenters included 7th graders who dressed up as many of the iconic individuals who have furthered the cause of African Americans in this country. Students represented and presented on Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, Jackie Robinson, and more! Our wonderful 5th graders also presented their research. Amazing individuals such as Former President Barack Obama, Syracuse Chief of Police Frank Fowler, Pele, Maya Angelou, and others were highlighted in the 5th grade. Following these students, the various Student of the Month awards were presented. These awards are given to students for their all-around excellence in academics and/or citizenship. We are proud of the work that our ATOMS are accomplishing in the second half of the school year. Keep up the great work!

During our field trip to Tim’s Pumpkin Patch, the students were able to explore many things. Although cold and rainy, the students were able to enjoy several activities the

park had to offer. We saw farm animals, including chickens, pigs, and sheep. The students saw several varieties of pumpkins, such as gourds and white pumpkins; they were

amazed that there could be so many different types of pumpkins. Next, the students took turns going through the small hay maze, followed by the whole group going through the

farm’s larger corn maze. This was quite the experience, as we seemed to have been lost for a while, but the students were encouraging not only each other, but the adults as well, that we can find the way out! After finally finding the end to the corn maze, the students were able to pick out their own pumpkin which they were able to bring home. Due to the weather, we had to cut the trip short, but the farm sent us back with cider and donuts, which the students enjoyed while we again discussed the life cycle of a

pumpkin!

On Thursday, November 16th, 2017, SAS high school students got a chance to meet representatives from many diverse professions at Career Day. Ever wondered what it takes to be an Air Traffic Controller? How about an Architect or a Music Producer? About a dozen volunteers held presentations in different classrooms so students could learn about each profession’s day-to-day tasks and the requirements needed to pursue each career. Students had the opportunity to ask questions of the presenters to learn more about what they do and the rewards and challenges of pursuing specific career paths. On Tuesday, February 7th, 2017, a group of staff, parents, and students from the SAS family went to Albany for the NYS Charter School Advocacy Day. The intention of this event was to showcase SAS and other charters in NYS and to help build new relationships with those that create the laws that govern our schools. In addition, We sought to enhance the long-standing partnerships with the many lawmakers that have supported the amazing work done at SAS and other charters. The group was led by our amazing administration team that was represented by Dr. Kocak (School Director), Mr. Cetin (Assistant Director), Mr. Yavuz (Dean of the Middle School) and Mrs. Smith (Dean of the Elementary School). They were joined by nine of our dedicated parent partners with right students ranging from grades 2 through 10 as well as Mr. Carter a teacher from the Middle School.

What was our goal? Well, outside of the demonstration of what makes SAS great, we sought to describe what equitable funding could mean to their schools and futures! Many do not realize that charter schools only receive a fraction per pupil of what traditional public schools receive. As the per student amounts of aid have risen for traditional public schools, charter school funding have been frozen for many years. These issues combined with the unsubsidized building costs that charter school face diminish our potential. In addition, the state cap on charter enrollment makes it difficult for us to share our strengths with the community. Even with these circumstances, the accomplishments of SAS are amazing. Our graduation, college readiness, and college acceptance rates are things that any school should be proud of.

Our group met directly with Assemblywoman Pamela Hunter and Assemblyman William Magnarelli. The senior staff of Senator John Defrancisco and Senator Valesky met with our group to hear our concerns as these representatives were in chamber. These dedicated public servants listened to our staff, parents, and students talk about what it is to be at SAS and how our student-centered approach has yielded great results! As more and more lawmakers see what we have accomplished, we hope to make funding for SAS equitable with traditional public schools and present even more opportunities for our amazing students to shine bright! On Thursday, September 8th, 2016, the students at the Syracuse Academy of Science Middle School participated in our Olweus Anti-Bullying Kickoff. This research based program is intended to bring bullying out of the shadows and make it part of a central conversation to improve awareness. Classrooms circulated between three areas, classroom, the cafeteria for a guest speaker, and the gym. First, students participated in a classroom meeting with a team building activity that they roleplayed various situations that were designed to get students to move from being a bullying bystander to helping address and prevent it. In addition, students participated in a t-shirt design contest as they drew logos with anti-bullying messages. Lastly, Students participated in team building activities around the gym designed to build skills in communication, problem solving, and listening. Secondly, we had guest speakers, Jami Ryan and Maureen Foran-Mocete, and their team from the Child Advocacy Center, who presented to each grade level at Syracuse Academy Middle School. Their presentation focused on bullying prevention and how to turn bystanders into upstanders. The scholars were engaged and participated in answering and asking questions. Lastly, grade levels enjoyed different activities in the gym. The first activity focused on communication. Students worked in pairs to give verbal directions to a partner as they draw a simple image. The entire group shared their image to see which pair was able to communicate and recreate the image closest to the actual picture. The following three activities focused on trust, communication, and listening skills. Students work in pairs to guide their partner through a "mine field" while they are blind folded. Students had to get to the other side without hitting any of the items. A variation of this game required students to walk to a location blind folded and retrieve as many items as they could as their partner guided them verbally. Additionally, students worked in teams to get from one end of the gym to the other through a "sea of hot chocolate" as they stepped on "marshmallows". The last station was a photo booth where students formed many group poses with props to help send a "No Bullying" message. Students were good sports and enjoyed working in a variety of groups and pairs

On Tuesday, November 13, 2018, the #SASCS Middle School assembled as a community to celebrate student achievement. #SASAtoms were honored for the following; Demonstrating Citizenship, Most Improved, Honor Roll, High Honor Roll, Student of the Month, Best Academic and our Golden Atom.

We are proud of each of our #SASAtoms and love celebrating their achievements. Together, we are building success one ATOM at a time.

On Friday, December 23rd, 2016 the SAS Middle School held its 3rd Annual Staff vs. Students Basketball Game. Students from the 6th and 7th grade pitted their youth and speed against the size and experience of the staff members. Although the staff members would prove victorious, the game was fun for all participants and spectators. Student Co-MVP's were named as Alexius Pierce and Zachary Allen. Staff Co-MVP's were named as Mr. Frisina and Mr. McGriff. This annual event is a crowd favorite and is a great way to kick off the holiday vacation! Have a safe holiday season Atoms! On Friday, February 17th, 2017 the SAS Middle School held its Black History Month and January Student of the Month Assembly. The event was kicked off by the wonderful projects of our students. Volunteer presenters included 7th graders who dressed up as many of the iconic individuals who have furthered the cause of African Americans in this country. Students represented and presented on Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, Jackie Robinson, and more! Our wonderful 5th graders also presented their research. Amazing individuals such as Former President Barack Obama, Syracuse Chief of Police Frank Fowler, Pele, Maya Angelou, and others were highlighted in the 5th grade. Following these students, the various Student of the Month awards were presented. These awards are given to students for their all-around excellence in academics and/or citizenship. We are proud of the work that our ATOMS are accomplishing in the second half of the school year. Keep up the great work!

The De La Cruz and Bonilla families were victims of a house fire weeks before that claimed most of their possessions. This team effort created a great event that involved a car wash, barbecue, bounce house, bake sale, and more! SAS families from all three buildings helped out and participated in the festivities. An event such as this represents the best qualities of the Syracuse Academy of Science. Students, parent, teachers, and administrators who are here for one common goal, the success of our students and families!

On December 8th, 2016 the Kindergarteners went to see the ballet, “Dasher’s Magical Gift.” The students were able to experience a live performance up close and personal. This

interactive play taught the students about the true meaning of Christmas: that family and friends are our true gifts that we should cherish. This is a message that we are

constantly trying to convey with our students in the classroom. During the play, the students saw comical penguins, friendly reindeer, hardworking elves, and Santa Clause

himself. In each of the Kindergarten classrooms, we are learning about holidays around the world. Not only was this ballet about Christmas, which is widely celebrated in the

United States, but during the play, one of the main characters said, “Merry Christmas! And Happy Hanukkah! And Happy Kwanza! And Happy Diwali!” We will be learning about, or have already learned about each of these celebrations from around the world. The children had so much fun, and were so happy and excited that they got to see Santa!

Syracuse Academy of Science senior Lyrik Jackson insists that the #SASAtoms are a balanced team, with no superstars.

But the all-state guard looked an awful lot like one midway through the fourth quarter of tonight's girls Class C basketball sectional final at Syracuse University's Carrier Dome.

Little Falls had whittled what once was a 19-point #SASCS lead down to eight points at the end of the third quarter.

Midway through the final quarter, the Mounties were still hanging around - down only 10 and threatening to inch closer.

Jackson went to work. She canned back-to-back 3-pointers on consecutive possessions then, after a basket by fellow senior Diamonne Harris, Jackson scored a breakaway layup to put her team back in control with a 16-point lead and just over a minute left to play.

The fifth-seeded Atoms went on to a 63-42 victory over Little Falls to earn the first girls sectional championship in school history.

"I just said I don't want to go home," said Jackson, who scored a game-high 25 points. "Coach said to just keep playing, keep pushing."

SAS is now 18-4 and advances to state regional play. The Atoms will face the Section IV champion on March 10 at a site in the Syracuse area.

Little Falls, the No. 2 seed, finishes its season at 19-5.

It was a milestone win on a journey for SAS, and its coach, Reggie Pickard, that began in 2010-11 after the school put its first varsity girls team together.

Pickard and assistants Donniesha Terry and Rasheada Caldwell built a solid program that began winning more than it lost in the 2013-14 season.

Getting that championship proved a bit more elusive for the Atoms.

SAS earned berths in the sectional finals the past two years, but lost both times - to Cooperstown in 2015-16 and a three-overtime heart-breaker to Thousand Islands last March.

"We just told them we have to leave everything on the court," Caldwell said. "Just go out and do what we do. We're aggressive. We play hard. The girls really wanted this - especially losing last year."

This time, the Atoms prevailed.

But not before the Mounties from the Center State Conference II made SAS work a little.

Little Falls went on a 13-2 run in the third quarter to shave a 19-point SAS lead to just eight points, 40-32, after three quarters.

"My kids played with a lot of heart," Mounties coach Pam Munger said. "They put it out there in the second half. They could have walked away, they could have said they were done. They battled back. We got it to within eight. We just didn't have enough offense today."

Olivia Langdon scored 15 points to lead Little Falls, which was seeking its sixth sectional title.

SAS got 12 points from eighth-grader Alexius Pierce, Caldwell's daughter, and nine each from sophomores Freey Pleasants and Xyel Bradford.

"My teammates - it's all them," Jackson said. "They knew I was hot and they got me the ball - I've got to give them all the credit."

Despite Jackson's modesty, Caldwell said, she is a special player.

"We have a strong team this year, and all of our players can score," she said. "But Lyrik, she put the team on her back. She carried us. She's just one of those great players"

Pickard, who sent Caldwell out for the post-game interview while he stayed in the locker room for awhile, said it was hard to put his feelings into words.

"I'm overwhelmed," he said. "This is a big win, not just for SAS but for the whole community."

Monday, March 19, 2018 was a special day at Syracuse Academy of Science for Lady Atoms Basketball Team. Whole school came together in the morning to celebrate these special student-athletes. The team accomplish a lot this year by winning the girls basketball program`s first Section III, Regional, and State Finalist Titles.

Athletic Department and the Lady Atoms thank a lot for the support we received from administration, staff, and students. Special thanks go to Coach Reginald Pickard and Donniesha Terry for their hard work and dedication.

On Friday, September 16th, 2016, Miss Bittel and Miss Orioli's Student Leadership Club hosted their first Teen Center Night at the SAS Middle School from 5:30PM-7:00PM. Teen Center Night is an event for students to be able to come and hangout in a safe environment while doing interactive activities with their peers. Students were able to rotate from a wide variety of activities including, karaoke, basketball, coloring, watching a movie and playing video games. Pizza and drinks were provided! Students leadership uses Teen Center Night as a way to raise money for other events throughout the school year! Friday's event was hosted to raise money for our SAS family who lost their home to a house fire in August! Fun was had by all!
