Biography

Recipe for Katy Gunn: Pour equal parts of the following into large bowl: Ella Fitzgerald, Bettie Paige, Wonder Woman, Hip-Hop, pure joy, Brain-Dance, unrequited love, sinful debauchery, Idealism to a fault, and (quite a bit of) sarcasm.

Cook for any length of time to achieve varying results. All promise to be rich rich rich.

Katy Gunn - a DIYer with a vengeance, wrote and produced her solo EP - well equipped with rich vocal harmonies, soulful grooves and an intimate songwriter's sensibility. Sarcastically witty "exquisite pop" as quoted by her CD Baby review, Katy Gunn's music is all at once dark and blissful, daring and eclectic while maintaining accessibility as she always finds a way to lay down a hook with particular sophistication. To top it off, her voice is one you won't be forgetting anytime soon.

From the age of two, Katy routinely stole her brother's violin and practiced secretly in the broom closet. The path to a musical life seemed inevitable from that point on. Dropping out of high school to study classical violin at the Oberlin Conservatory, she performed at home and abroad as soloist and concert master, until eventually moving beyond the staid classical world to pursue her own musical language. Katy traveled restlessly between San Francisco, West Hollywood, Chicago, New York, Spain and Brazil before eventually settling in Williamsburg (Brooklyn), where she currently resides.

Nothing like your typical rock band, come to a show and you will find a seven piece group with three part vocal harmony, two violins (katy will dazzle you as she sings and plays the violin - both at the same time) and a complete rhythm section sure to please. Her self-released EP is a willing teaser for the upcoming album, "Beautiful Things," yet another DIY accomplishment to be released in the fall of 2010.

This fascinating 10-second clip (sarcasm) shows an example of SoundManager 2 + HTML5 audio stress test pages running side-by-side on an iPad and iPhone. I'm trying to figure out when and what may cause the dreaded "cannot play movie" error dialog sometimes shown.

The process roughly involves new Audio().src = 'foo.mp3?rnd='+Math.random() being assigned, and then at onfinish(), the process is repeated until the browser (or device) barfs with "cannot play movie" after running out of memory(?) or other resources.

The buttons are provided as a way of starting the sound create-play loop again, should it stop for some reason. On iOS4, sound playback must be user initiated and if new sounds are to be created and/or played, they must be chained via the prior sound's finish event.

The point is to try to determine what kind of limits (RAM, number of objects, amount of requests/loads) are eventually being hit and causing the strange error.

The iPad made it to 135 plays in this case, and the iPhone (a 3GS with iOS 4.1) has finally appeared to have crapped out (albeit the sound stopped, but no error dialog) at 279. Starting playback again via tapping a button gave out at 291, no dialog.

With the iPad, once failed, subsequent reloads of the page immediately fail to play audio and show the modal error dialog. The iPhone seemed to clean up after itself and was responsive after a reload of the page.

One of many scenes from the Fremont Solstice Parade 2010. It was a rainy. overcast day. The weather, of course, did not stop us from celebrating the start of another seattle summer.

Held on Saturday, June-ary 19. High of about 60 degrees.

Warnings and instructions on the door of the famous collector's shop, Cloud Cuckoo Land, in Mevagissey, Cornwall.

Perhaps he should add "no photographing this door and posting pictures of it on Flickr"...

Her self-released EP is a willing teaser for the upcoming album, "Beautiful Things," yet another DIY accomplishment to be released in the fall of 2010.

last night my 48 hour film opened at the AFI in Silver Spring - you can see it now, on my webpage: oozing sarcasm

Ever heard of the movie, "Where Angels Go, Trouble Follows?" Matt and I tend to live by that line. If it's not my car alarm going off uncontrollably in the BUSY Multnomah Falls parking lot, it's my car on fire. Yes, fire.

We had left to backpack to Marmot Pass in the Olympic National Forest yesterday morning. After a missed sign for 101 North out of Olympia (by 20 miles), and the longest detour through McCleary for the Rainier to Pacific relay race, we FINALLY made it northbound on HWY 101. I estimated we could be at the trainhead by about 1.30pm. As we started up FS27, only a few miles from the trailhead, white smoke comes spewing out behind the car. Could this be dust from the (paved) road? No, says Matt. As soon as I stop, the smoke is billowing from under the hood. Not knowing what could be wrong (but I'm paranoid about keeping my car in working order), Matt calmly reminds to NOT open up the hood with all the smoke!

Then came the flames. I'm pretty panicky at this point and wishing I had a fire extinguisher. (I own one in my car now!) The flames were down under the car near the oil reservoir and axle. I can still clearly see the reflection of the bright orange flames on the black pavement. Packs, cameras, and valuables were evacuated from the car and were safe.

What could be wrong?? Oil level? high. Coolant? full. Tranny fluid? Can't find it! Subaru makes the worst diagrams, because we could not for the life of us figure out where the dipstick was for the tranny fluid!

This is my worst nightmare come to life. Stuck in the mountains with no cell service! By the time the third car stopped and asked if we needed help, we finally gave in and took their help. Enter Crow and Lisa. I tell you, good karma will come there way for this! Crow deduced it was a cracked transmission line that broke, spewed tranny fluid on the super-hot exhaust manifold, which then caused the leaking tranny fluid to ignite.

I dealt with incompetent phone answerers as I called my insurance company's help line and I was finally able to get a tow truck to meet us at the Quilcene ("Q-U-I-L-C-E-N-E") Ranger station ("There's a huge sign, you can't miss it!"). Crow, Lisa, and their two dogs took us back down the 5-7 miles to Quilcene, then they continued back up the hill to start and finish their hike.

The next few hours consisted of rescuing the car, driving to Silverlake, and finding a shop on a late Saturday afternoon that could fix my car. Kevin, the tow truck driver, went above the call of duty in making sure I could get back on the road the same day. And it all worked out...all that was needed was a new transmission line/tube.

Backpacking elsewhere was out of the question given that it was now after 6pm, so I instead put in a call to my friends in Puyallup. We were fed homemade cheese-filled pasta and delicious red wine, and had a few good hours of conversation at my friend's house before we headed back on our way to PDX. Yea for friends who live out of state!

Needless to say, the day's adventure wasn't exactly as we planned, but at least everything worked out in the end. =)

Drawing inward.

Pull in stomach.

Haunch shoulders.

Bow head.

Close eyes.

...Think happy thoughts.

This is called intense sarcasm. This was the final score of the University of Michigan/Rutgers University football game yesterday. Michigan beat is 78-0. That is not just awful, this is absolutely embarrassing. The game was played here in beautiful Piscataway, New Jersey.....and the Scarlet Knights put up ZERO points.

Losing a game 78-0 is very difficult; you have to try really hard NOT to score and be unable to stop the other team from scoring almost every time the Wolverines had the ball.

To make things worse, Rutgers lost their game to Ohio State (out in Columbus, Oh) 58-0......this means Rutgers has lost their past two games by a combined score of 136-0.

For my Flickr peeps who do not know too much about American football, this is the equivalent of your football (soccer) team losing by a score of about 10-0.

I don't see Chelsea losing any matches 10-0.

I don't see Bayern Munich losing 10-0 to anybody.

I don't see Barcelona getting beat by a 10-0 margin.

Bad Rutgers.....BAD Rutgers..... :-(

"xD" or "XD", an emoticon commonly used on the internet to express happiness, self-deprecation, laughter, bewilderment, or sarcasm.
