El macho mide unos 15 cm. y la hembra 10 cm. (Cola más corta) Sexos distintos.
Posible confusión: Inconfundible
Actitudes: Posa visible. Muy territorial.
Ecología: La hembra construye el nido a la sombra, tiene forma de conito y cuelga entre las raíces que sobresalen en los barrancos, emplea materiales como musgo, telas de araña, líquenes y lo tapiza con fibras vegetales*. Como en casi todas las especies de Picaflores, es la que incuba y cría a los pichones.
El macho realiza despliegues abriendo y cerrando la cola para ahuyentar a los intrusos del área de alimentación, que puede circunscribirse a un arbusto o a una zona mayor, dependiendo esto de la oferta de alimento*
La hembra defiende el área del nido*
Alimentación: Néctar de flores, insectos, etc.
Hábitat: Matorrales y arbustales en Serranías. Pastizales. Barrancos. Jardines en ciudades. En verano hasta 3000 m.s.n.m. En invierno desciende.
Distribución: Jujuy, Salta, Tucumán, sur de Santiago del Estero, Catamarca, La Rioja, San Juan, Mendoza, San Luis, Neuquén y Córdoba. Eventualmente puede llegar a La Pampa y Buenos Aires.
Argentina. Chile. Bolivia.

Slight damage to the rear bumper, setting the trend for it's younger brother's, who were/are hardly ever seen without gaffer taped bumpers. I think the ones on these were slightly more durable though.
