On a walk through the farming area that is about 3km south of home I came across this tree with some sap oozing out.

I am really bummed with this image, had high hopes for it. The bird was in a fairly shadow area and had to shoot directly into the sitting sun
Tried my best for a better image with editing, but this is one of my weak points in photography.
I am posting because it is a fairly rare bird for me, personally.
A surprise find, but I believe there may be a breeding pair at Terra Cotta Conservation area! I was busy photographing warblers when suddenly I was surprised to hear a tapping sound, low and behold a Yellow Bellied Sapsucker enjoying some sap within close range! Tough lighting conditions (bright sun, harsh shadows) but you take what you can get!
Sometimes I scrape together a few bucks and travel far away to find cool looking birds.
Sometimes I walk out into the backyard.
The era of backyard birding is upon us!
Currently, the regular visitors to my yard include chickadees, juncos, house finches, nuthatches, flickers and red-breasted sapsuckers like this one.
It's not quite Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge, but it's mine...
Sap flows through a portion of the outer tree trunk called sapwood. Sapwood consists of actively growing cells that conduct water and nutrients (sap) from the roots to the branches of the tree. During the day, activity in the cells of sapwood produces carbon dioxide.
The internet is such a source of trivia :)

These metal buckets are collecting sap from maple trees that will be turned into maple syrup by boiling off most of the water in large vats. Buckets were the traditional way to do this but modern operations use plastic bags or use long collection tubes that empty into a common tank. Yesterday was Maine Sugar Sunday when over 100 producers invite the public to visit not only to purchase syrup or other maple products like candy, popcorn, and nuts (all are delicious) but to also view the production facilities. For children there were some special activities. This photo was taken a Goranson Farm in Dresden, Maine. For Werner.
Maine, at 2.2 million L (580,000 US gal), is the the third largest producer of maple syrup after Vermont and New York. The Canadian province of Quebec leads the world in maple syrup production. In 2019 the average price per gallon in the US was $31.
An Orange-crowned Warbler feeding on frozen Maple sap that was melting in the sun. Apparently humans aren't the only ones who like Maple syrup ;o)
This bird is one of a few of its species wintering in our part of southern Ontario this season, outside of its typical winter range.
Psalm 92:14 “They (the righteous) will still yield fruit in old age; They shall be full of sap and very green.”
At first I thought these were rain drops. We've had a lot of rain so I've been in and out a lot today taking photos. I have more photos but this was my favorite of the bunch.
Thank you all for your encouragement on yesterdays post, it's nice to have a community that actually reads my thoughts and responds. :) I'll respond there soon.

The waning Sap Moon makes its descent behind the Flatirons, as a spring sunrise reveals the aftermath of a significant spring snow-storm over the Front Range of the Colorado Rockies. This is one of my favorite vantages of the Flatiron formation and the town I call home, but getting up there through the 14" of crusty consolidated wet snow was more work than I anticipated. The Sap Moon is also called the Worm Moon by some people, as it is (often) this time of year that worm castings appear and attract the first Robins of Spring.
I had to take a quick break from the photos of Patagonia to show off a bit of unexpected home town glory. I think this was one of the most beautiful sunrises and full moon sets I've ever had the privilege to photograph, though I am not sure how well I have done it justice here.
For those who have read this far, I hope you enjoy as much as I did experiencing it! This is a horizontal stitch of three images, and then a fourth image for the proper moon exposure.

This female Yellow-bellied sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius) was a day later but in the same vicinity as the other two woodies at the Springfield Conservation Nature Center. It was a bright day so I added the 1.4 extender to the big lens. You can see all the holes around the trunk that provides sap for her. This is only the second time I've seen this species, we are on the edge of the non-breeding to migration range.
I can imagine a lot of tears being shed in the world today with the Ukraine war and closer to home the flooding emergency in SE Queensland, Brisbane and northern NSW. All the best to Brisbane friends and some of my Melbourne friends who are visiting a sick parent.
The trees in the walkway next to my house are weeping red sap in sympathy. Either that or it is the attack by black fungus and ants causing it!
Take care everyone (Flickr and otherwise) in Brisbane! As to Ukraine, words cannot express what is happening there!

In a similar vein to my previous post, in retrospect I regret not giving this girl any currency for her effort in rowing out to our boat on Tonle Sap lake, Cambodia, in a ... tub?
We were warned by our tour guide not to give money and even though we heeded that advice, sure enough we were soon approached by other craft bearing small children and snakes. It is nevertheless difficult to resist the pleas of a young child for "dollar, dollar".
If I had this time again, I would prefer to ignore the guide's advice and pay the dollar(s), rather than feel guilty for the rest of my life that I didn't.
