Two of my favorite things . . . a waterfall and a sunset. Sandstone Falls in West Virginia's New River Gorge region is one of my favorite places to be . . .

Thanks for taking a look, and have a great day!

Sandstone Falls on a foggy morning is just hands down incredible.

Once the floor of an inland sea, the mesas of The Breakaways provide another attraction for tourists visiting Coober Pedy, with its opal mines and unique underground dwellings and businesses.

Yep it is my favorite collapsed sandstone cliff. You've seen it before, and there is a couple of trees on top of the cliff that are ready to fall as well , maybe after the next big rain and boy are we due for some. It hasn't rained now for over 5 months

Zebra slot canyon has been on my list of shots to get for years yet I never seemed to find time getting around to it. My last planned visit here got shelved after a rainstorm pummeled the southwest. Attempting to complete my slot canyon collection, I finally made a trip out to Escalante this fall.

Accustomed to the slot canyons around Page, Zebra slot is a rather short canyon. In total, Zebra is at most only 50-60 feet long. However, the last stretch is stunning with striated walls. During the early morning hours, the canyon had a cool dank color but as the sun rose higher a subtle glow crept in towards the back of the canyon. By mid-morning, the canyon colors were at its best with dynamic warmth towards the rear flanked by cool tones at the sides of the front.

This area is one of my favorite areas to bring clients, and no, it's not White Pocket or Coyote Buttes. I've never seen anyone else here and there is so much to photograph with tepees, water pockets, brainrock, fins, etc. It's always nice when you get a sunset like this!

Sandstone Falls is a wealth of beauty in a small area. At over 1200 ft. across and includes a couple of islands, it's amazing what you can find in some of the nooks and crannies.

Vintage sign painted and now etched into a large sandstone wall. Kane County, Utah.

This formation was crafted over thousands of years due to a unique weathering process known as tafoni. It has created a honeycomb pattern and smooth holes in the sandstone.

The largest waterfall on the New River, Sandstone Falls spans the river where it is 1500 feet wide. Divided by a series of islands, the river drops 10 to 25 feet.

Into another mysterious place in the Mojave Desert, this cliff top full of wind carved sandstone formations was a pretty amazing place to see. After a few turns on some sandy desert backroads and Christina waking up again to getting stuck for a minute in the soft sand we parked the car and walked in the direction we hoped that this place would be. It wasn't the easiest place to find since nothing is marked. I never knew a place like this existed in the Mojave. Dragons, hobgoblins and devils, there are so many things you can imagine in place like this.

In July 2001 Sandstone Heritage Trust had their first open weekend at the Sandstone Estates farm near Ficksburg in the Eastern Free State. The collection of trains was much smaller then than it is today! This is newly resorted class NGG16 no 153 on the first section of track they laid between the main complex at Hoekfontein and the loop at Grootdraai.

With no idea what to expect it was quite an eye opener to see what could be described as a huge toy box but in real life scale. Trains aside there were hundreds of vintage tractors at the site many of them in working order.

I re-processed this image tonight as I received an order for a print and I've never been quite happy with the image. Until now, that is. Using some new post-processing techniques I was able to take this photo from 2005 and create the image I've always had in my head. The location is Valley of Fire State Park near Las Vegas, NV. It's one of the coolest (no pun intended) state parks I've visited anywhere. I can't wait to go back in 2011!

This image began life as a RAW file that was processed in Adobe Lightroom 3.3, exported to Photoshop CS5 as a TIFF and optimized using Nik Viveza 2, Color Efex Pro and Sharpener Pro.

I’m not sure why, but I keep thinking I’ve milked my West Virinia trip from this past fall dry and then, “bam” I find another shot. This one I merged and edited some time ago then forgot about and came across it looking for a cover shot for my new Facebook photography page. Not only did I end up using it as my cover shot, I figured I’d post it today as well. Also looking forward to my upcoming trip in a couple of weeks to the Potomac Highlands in West Virginia with my good friend Randy Sanger, time for a much needed waterfall vacation. Enjoy, as always thanks for stopping by, and have a happy Tuesday!

Goblin Valley State Park, Utah.

There are thousands of these mushroom-shaped rock pinnacles in the area, locally referred to as 'goblins.'

This sandstone formation is located at Mile Marker 123 on Utah Highway 24, about 10 miles north of Hanksville.

Ancient (or alien?) communication? Probably not. It's amazing what wind and water can do over time.

Columns on eroded sandstone, Zion National Park.

While the entirely of the Utah landscape (and similar landscapes in the American Southwest) is compelling, for me the main defining feature always seems to be the red sandstone formations. Yes, I know there are other geological wonders, but in so many cases I see those relative to the massive layers of sandstone. Those lovely white strata? Much more powerful juxtaposed with the red sandstone? The beautiful forests? That red is a powerful complement to their color. And on it goes.

So it shouldn’t be surprising that my photographs of the regions from time to time distill down to photographs of that rock itself. It is a remarkable material. Sometimes it is fractured and broken, but it can also appear to be as smooth and unbroken as butter. We say it is “red,” but the truth is much more complicated, and the light affects our perception of its color a great deal. I photographed this small section of a Zion Canyon wall from below using a long focal length that allowed me to constrain the view to a few columns in the diffused and reflected light.

During my four-day loss of internet service, I decided I had enough images to start another collection, Shooting Sandstone.

From San Francisco to San Diego, I have shot sandstone, cliffs, rocks, formations, caves, whatever.

Going through the images and picking the best was something I have been thinking about for a while now. Thanks to AT&T, I finally had time.

This mound of Navajo sandstone curves into a semicircle and swirls around without regard to the usual horizontal lines of strata. The "cap" of lighter colored smooth sandstone here is also noteworthy, as it is at White Pocket.

I found it on the southern high-rise suburbs of the Lost City, Paria Plateau, Arizona on my second hike along the valley route to the Lost City. This spot is about 3.5 miles ENE of the popular White Pocket geological attraction. This layer of sandstone contains numerous exceptional examples of soft sediment deformation.

Another "skylight" shot from inside Lower Antelope Canyon. This one was a "save" from the Trash bin as for some reason I shot it at 1/640th second, which was a mistake made in the heat of the moment. Most of the shots I took in the canyon were from 1/10s to 1/80s hand held to get enough light for a proper exposure (thank goodness for image stabilization). So the short 1/640s exposure left the image super dark, causing a lot of noise when I lifted the shadows in post. But my noise reduction software did a pretty good job of getting rid of it, saving the image from deletion. I did have to crop out the bottom 3rd of it due to severe noise, but what is left isn't too bad.

A place to be,

where one is at peace.

Alone, yet in touch with everything,

embraced by the beauty around us.

Comfort, strength and safe from the world,

we each strike our own path in this journey of life.

Be yourself, hide nothing, so that others can be with you.

It is only then that you find your true self.

Thanks for listening :-) I just needed a brief interlude from the crazy days. Working on images and perhaps whipping up a quick word or two always helps.

The red sandstone cliffs take spectacular shapes: columns, swags, towers, corbels, funnels, sawteeth, sinkholes, potholes offer a constant vision of wonder to the eye. This is sedimentary rock, 99% quartz covered with a thin layer of iron oxide, and it is this latter which gives the stone its reddish colour.
