During my four-day loss of internet service, I decided I had enough images to start another collection, Shooting Sandstone.

From San Francisco to San Diego, I have shot sandstone, cliffs, rocks, formations, caves, whatever.

Going through the images and picking the best was something I have been thinking about for a while now. Thanks to AT&T, I finally had time.

A Winter storm dropped rain on the sandstone formations forming reflecting pools everywhere.

The Fisher Towers, carved from early Permian sandstone and capped with early Triassic sandstone, are much more substantial than sand castles on a beach, but will share the same inevitable fate, one grain at a time.

Union Pacific's Global 2, Illinois to Lathrop, California premium intermodal passes the conglomerate (not to be confused with sandstone) cliffs of Echo Canyon, Utah on Oct. 11, 2024.

Conglomerate is a sedimentary rock, composed of rounded quartz pebbles, cobbles, and boulders surrounded by a matrix of sand and finer material, and cemented with silica, iron oxide, or calcium carbonate. The rock fragments are rounded from being rolled along a stream bed or a beach.

The Echo Canyon formations range in age from 45 to 125 million years old.

Another photo of the wonderful sandstones on Spittal Beach in Northumberland. The pebbles have been placed there for contrast and deliberately made wet to enhance sheen.

Milwaukee Road 261 leads a fall color excursion over the Kettle River in Sandstone, MN. Founded in 1857, Sandstone was aptly named for the giant sandstone quarry near this location. On this day, Sandstone's population got a temporary boost as railfans from all over the midwest gathered to see the big Northern cross the aging bridge.

A very early morning rising with an hour of an uncharted hike to reach this hidden desert gem tucked away in a less known and reachable part of the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. The sheer size of the bowl is overwhelming and to give a feeling of its grandeur I included a person in the image.

The locality of the " Hrubá skála " offers hundreds of climbing trails directed to all towers in solid rock. More than 400 rock towers reach up to 55 metres high. They are so close to one another that climbers often move from one rock to another at height, fixed on the rope.

A rare and fine example of tafoni sandstone weathering. Tafoni occurs where water, wind, and stone meet to create inticate carvings. These are found in the Vermillion Cliffs national monument.

Torridonian sandstone outcrop on the NE spur of Farrmheall, with Beinn Spionnaidh and Cranstackie in the background.

The bedding plane is interestingly varied in this outcrop, as is the texture - some layers contain pebbles, which have been buried in the rock since the these deposits - from a river delta - were laid down approximately 1 billion years ago.

Wandering around about 30 minutes before sunset I took more than 200 photos. I was completely alone except for a group of 5 Big Horn Sheep that watched me the whole time I was in the area.

Recently I was able to enjoy the last days of autumn in southern Germany close to the boarder of France in the wonderful "Pfälzer Wald", the Rhineland-Palatinate Woodlands. These red sandstone rock formations are stunning. I was lucky to catch these evening sunbeams, which lasted only a couple of minutes before the sky got dark and cloudy again.
