National Black River Scenic Byway
Michigan
Sandstone Falls on Michiganās Black River is a stunning display of natureās artistry, where the river cascades over rugged layers of sandstone, creating a series of picturesque waterfalls. Tucked within the Ottawa National Forest, this hidden gem is surrounded by dense woodlands that burst into vibrant hues in autumn. The falls are shaped by centuries of water carving through the soft rock, leaving unique formations and swirling pools. It is a must-see for anyone exploring Michiganās Upper Peninsula.

This outcrop of Greybull Sandstone (Cretaceous) lies on the west side of the Red Gulch Road just a little over a mile and ahalf from where the road starts near Shell, Wyoming. A fluvial sand that was deposited paleovalleys cut intp the underleing sediments. This particular channel contains crossbedded sands that grade up into an estuarine facies.

~~~ The exposed sandstone has been scoured by the ocean and has been left pockmarked like swiss cheese.
Walking toward a deep canyon, I crossed this ephemeral stream. Two pools were visible, but I wondered whether the pools were rare or abundant. On the way back, I walked up this stream cutting into bedrock, and found four more in about half a mile. So I conclude that the pools are recurring element in a stream cutting into sandstone.
Potholes can be desert aquaria, populated with fairy shrimp, tadpole shrimp, horse hair worms and frogs. But I could not find anything in these. So, either pools in ephemeral streams are dramatically different habitats (scoured after fast water or floods) or else these were very young pools, with tiny eggs hatching but not yet visible.
Legend Rock State Petroglyph Site
Don't stare too hard. There are no petroglyphs in this photo just the beauty of the sandstone used as the "canvas" at this site. The petroglyphs at Legend Rock are etched into a crossbedded Creatceous sandstone. The sandstone is the Torchlighlight Member of the Frontier Formation named for the Torchlight Dome near Basin, Wyoming on the eastern side of the Big Horn Basin. It outcrops along a hogback on the flanks of the Hamiton Dome and Legend Rock is on the northern flank of that hogback. Iron and managanese oxides have been deposited on theweathered surfaces of the sandstone makind a good surface on which the ancient artists could chip their art. The crossbedded nature of the sandstone can be seen in this photo.
Here's a shot from a client outing to South Coyote Buttes last evening. The forecast had called for clear blue skies, so we were quite happy with these nice clouds. Once we got up on the sandstone, the sun started breaking out and we got some pretty incredible light up until sunset. Would you like to visit some of these remote areas of the desert Southwest? The rain ended the trip early, would love to return during much nicer weather.
Taken in Monument Valley, UT, in the Navajo tribal park. It is still amazing to me after seeing how unforgiving this land seems to be that indigenous people could live and survive here for thousands of years.
The Roaches has many sculptural forms where the elements have worked away on the sandstone.
Shortly before noon, the sandstone in this remote slot canyon on the Colorado Plateau catches the light just right, resulting in the light diffusion effect known as Rayleigh scattering.
Many, many thanks to my friend Willie Huang for his time, patience and especially his critical eye & counseling on helping me get the most out of the complex task of 'developing' an image that combined many focal & exposure blends
Grassy courtyard of the Supreme Court enclosed by warm sandstone a wall and elegant black cast iron fences.
Near Hinton or Sandstone, WV.
Would have been better to get there earlier so I wasn't shooting into the sun. I tried to get a fisherman that had waded out to pull that tree off. Another hard rain will get it off hopefully. Again, low water flow.
A beautiful sandstone monolith seen in SE Utah while looking for wildlife. i really like the sunlight making it glow and the stormy sky beyond.
Shot for Smile on Saturday, theme "mini figures"
This is my son Peter, at that time 10 years old. In the Technical University of Delft there was a 3D setup where you could digitise yourself and later have it cut out in sandstone. This figure is around 6 cm high, but the details are awesome. This is how he was 10 years ago, in looks and stance. Now, at almost 2 meters long it is a different story.....
And as a disclaimer, I think that I used this figure some years ago for another assignment. This shot itself, however, I took this morning.
