The strange colorful tree, protected by a bunch of bigger ones, grows in beautiful light on hidden glade. An ancient path of grass leads there, surrounded by columns of pines and larchs. The entrance to the cathedral of a sacred tree. You'll pay your respect or you'll never find the way out of there...

High Drama Morning among the recently arrived Kingfishers

Todiramphus sanctus

One of the more widespread Kingfishers in Australia (and beyond)...

Similar in size to the Forest Kingfisher, it was often adept at staying unseen until the last minute !

Our initial exploration around Darwin produced several sightings of both Sacred and Forest Kingfishers.

123 in 2023 #88 Sacred

52 weeks of 2023 HDR

A brief visit to the South New Brighton Estuary produced a nice result today. I have been trying to capture images like this of the Kotare / Kingfisher for quite some time. Today was the day 😀. I didn't try to follow as it flew from the tree into the water as my plan was to shoot it as it comes up with it's prey. Mission accomplished .

Kingfisher with a lizard for lunch against a bright cloudy sky.

I think the purple fringing is caused by the bright back lit background.

Datura is a genus of highly poisonous vespertine-flowering plants in the Nightshade family. There are several species of Datura, but pictured here is Datura wrightii, colloquially known as Sacred Datura, native to the Southwestern United States and Northwestern Mexico.

Datura plants – both Datura wrightii, and other varieties – contain toxic quantities of tropane alkaloids like scopolamine and atropine. Substantial ingestion of Datura results in anticholinergic syndrome; function of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine is blocked, resulting in a series of symptoms ranging from psychosis to hyperthermia to temporary blindness. The symptoms of anticholinergic syndrome are described by the medical mnemonic “Blind as a bat, mad as a hatter, red as a beet, hot as a hare, dry as a bone, the bowel and bladder lose their tone, and the heart runs alone.” Ingestion of Datura can be lethal.

That doesn’t stop some people, often teenagers, from ingesting it though, because hey, psychoactive plant! But apparently it is the Worst. Drug. Ever. I once heard it described by a Youtuber as “The Psychedelic that Only Gives Bad Trips.” A foray into the Datura Trip Reports section of Erowid.org features Trip Report titles such as “24 Hours of Madness”, “Three Unpleasant Days,” “Imaginary Friends May Not Be Nice”, “Vague, Unreal, and Unpleasant,” “The Depths of Delirium Sucked”, “Complete Retrograde Amnesia”, “Loss of Coordination Entirely”, and “Oblivion in the Worst Possible Sense.”

Clearly ingesting Datura isn’t advisable. If you wish to unlock its mysteries, I would recommend sitting with it and asking it what it wants to tell you rather than consuming it. But if you want to get wild and crazy, maybe touch it and end up with a horrible case of contact dermatitis* like me. :)

*Note that it isn’t known to give contact dermatitis universally, only to sensitive individuals; I’m allergic to almost everything on God’s Green Earth, so it’s not surprising I had a reaction. That being said, apparently touching it with an open sore can be No Bueno.

Many thanks for your visits, faves and comments. Cheers.

Sacred Kingfisher

Scientific Name: Todiramphus sanctus

Description: The Sacred Kingfisher is a medium sized kingfisher. It has a turquoise back, turquoise blue rump and tail, buff-white underparts and a broad cream collar. There is a broad black eye stripe extending from bill to nape of neck. Both sexes are similar, although the female is generally lighter with duller upper parts. Young birds are similar to the female, but have varying amounts of rusty-brown edging to feathers on the collar and underparts, and buff edges on the wing coverts.

Distribution: The Sacred Kingfisher is common and familiar throughout the coastal regions of mainland Australia and less common throughout Tasmania. The species is also found on islands from Australasia to Indonesia and New Zealand.

Habitat: The Sacred Kingfisher inhabits woodlands, mangroves and paperbark forests, tall open eucalypt forest and melaleuca forest.

Seasonal movements: In Australia, Sacred Kingfishers spend the winter in the north of their range and return south in the spring to breed.

Feeding: Sacred Kingfishers forage mainly on the land, only occasionally capturing prey in the water. They feed on crustaceans, reptiles, insects and their larvae and, infrequently, fish. The birds perch on low exposed branch on the lookout for prey. Once prey is located, the Sacred Kingfisher swoops down and grasps it in its bill, returning to the perch to eat it.

Breeding: For most of the year Sacred Kingfishers are mainly solitary, pairing only for the breeding season. Usually two clutches are laid in a season. Both sexes excavate the nest, which is normally a burrow in a termite mound, hollow branch or river bank. The nest chamber is unlined and can be up to 20m above the ground. Both sexes also incubate the eggs and care for the young.

Calls: The voice of the Sacred Kingfisher is a loud "ek ek ek ek" repeated continuously throughout breeding season. Birds also give a "kee kee kee" in excitement and a series of chirring, scolding notes when alarmed.

Minimum Size: 19cm

Maximum Size: 24cm

Average size: 21cm

Average weight: 45g

Breeding season: September to December; occasionally extended to March, if conditions are favourable.

Clutch Size: 3 to 6

Incubation: 18 days

Nestling Period: 26 days

Sacred Ibis - Plettenberg - South Africa

Basilique Notre-Dame de Montréal, Vieux-Montréal, Montréal, Quebec. April 21, 2014.

I first noticed there were two last week and have been watching the courtship. He has been courtship feeding her and showing her the real estate he has picked out. I have used their behaviour and my photos to work out which is which and this and the last photo is the result of my research.

He was providing regular food runs for the sitting female.

He had several regular perch sites near the nest and would fly in, announce his presence and drop down to the opening. Usually he didn't enter, but she'd take it from his beak in the opening.

Sacred Kingfisher

≠======================≠

On a near 40c day, in a very oppressive forest wtih little relief from the heat, which is captured under the tree canopy, this Kiingfisher was panting and trying to find some cooler shady spot to rest.

With a name like Kingfisher, you'd think they might spend time in the water.

Sacred Kingfisher eats mostly a wide variety of invertebrates they only occassionally take very small fish, or frogs.
