Most Jangseung (Village Guardian Posts) and Sotdae (Sacred Poles) stand at the village entrance. The posts are believed to drive off evil spirits, illness or catastrophe that could enter the village, and the duck perched up on a such a pole symbolizes abundance and fertility. The posts protect the village with glaring eyes and the ever-watchful duck on the sacred pole cries with a thunderous roar.
This flower was growing in the shade of a huge natural rock amphitheater by the Colorado River in Grand Canyon. I believe it is a Sacred Datura. Thanks to Adam Schallau for his help in creating this image.
Walking to work across Southwark Bridge (1921) on a grey midwinter morning, an ugly big truck following behind, overlooked by Sir Christopher Wren's magnificent dome of St Pauls' Cathedral (1710).
Very heavy light pollution from suburban sky at Pico Sacro (Sacred Peak), near Santiago de Compostela, and no Orionids. But Orion is Orion...
Moita contaminación lumínica sobre o Pico Sacro e ningunha Oriónida. Mais Orión sempre paga a pena...

"Sacred"- Rising 1,600 feet above the New Mexico desert, Shiprock is taller then the Empire State Building and close to the height of the World Trade Center. Located in the 4 corners region south of Farmington, NM it got it's name from the early settlers crossing in Wagon Train s as when viewed from a different perspective it resembles a sailing ship and can be seen over 70 miles away in Arizona. It is known as Tsé Bitʼaʼí to the Navajos meaning "rock with wings" and is a religious and cultural site to them. When the sun went down and lit the clouds above in this beautiful orange light, I knew why it is sacred to them.
Comet 46/P Wirtanen above Pico Sacro (Sacred Peak). Cloudy weather left few opportunities to register this approaching comet, but there it is! Despite the strong winds at the top, 100% humidity and moderate light pollution, I also could catch 46/P visually. Thin clouds add a diffuse glow to the stars and intense artificial lighting reveals the texture of the rocks (a conspicuous quartz-dyke).
