Orion's Belt is a very colorful region in the center of the constellation of Orion. This very deep image was composed of 4 panels and shows a huge chunk of sky at very high resolution. The region is filled with dust an gas, notably the Horsehead and Flaming star nebula are visible. Also notice the many other objects: IC423, 426, 431, IC432...

Four panel color image taken at the remote observatory from the E-Eye site in Spain.

The image is composed of 47.5 hours of exposure time with the ZWO ASI-2600MC color camera using a Takahashi Epsilon 180 ED Astrograph, riding on a Paramount ME II.

The Holidays are here! For many people this Friday will mark the beginning of the Holiday week. Many of you won't have that much Flickrtime next week, so here are my best wishes for the Holidays for you all!

And to keep in style with this group, there are two guesses in this one. Give me the car, and if you are really into it, tell me the location. I give you a clue: this is one of Germany's most photographed and picturesque churches. The mountains should tell you in which Bundesland you can find it.

Here's my buddy the Stellar's Jay (Cyanocitta stelleri) with todays antics. I was sitting on our deck this morning. This juvenile Jay was snooping around in the trees. We put several peanuts on the rail of the deck. Within minutes it was on the rail and away with the peanuts! At the time I was sitting on the deck about 8 feet away! I love these guys!

Stout's hotel opened in 1927 between the railroad and the main highway in the town of Gila Bend, Arizona. The original building had combined a hotel and a market starting in the early 1920's. The market burned down but the hotel survived. Albert Stout decided to focus on the hotel and hired the architectural firm of Henry C. Trost to design a building. Trost, famous as the architect of many buildings throughout the southwest, designed the hotel with the main entrance facing the street rather than the railroad. Stout owned an ice house in the town and took advantage of the location to open an ice cream parlor in the hotel, catering to drivers in Model T's crossing the desert at 25 mph. The hotel used abalone shell and coral in the flooring and registration desk giving it the nickname Jewel of the Desert. Always reliant on the railroad traffic for business, the hotel closed in 1985 when the railroad stopped. The structure remains in place and efforts are underway to restore the building.

A dominance hierarchy occurs in Harris' hawks, wherein the mature female is at the dominant bird, followed by the adult male and then the young of previous years. Groups typically include from 2 to 7 birds. Not only do birds cooperate in hunting, they also assist in the nesting process. No other bird of prey is known to hunt in groups as routinely as this species.

For those of you who don't know Red River Gorge in Eastern Kentucky has the highest concentration of natural sandstone arches east of the Mississippi River. Of those Grey's Arch may be the most majestic and beautiful in of all of them as it towers above a gully and an enormous rock recess. With a span of 79 ft., it is a real payoff on what is considered one of the best hikes in the gorge.

Spinster's Rock is a Neolithic dolmen near Drewsteignton in Devon. It is situated on Shilstone Farm west of the village. It is near the A382 road. The dolmen consist of three granite supports rising to between 1.7 and 2.3 metres surmounted by a capstone measuring 4.5 by 3.1 metres.

Anna's Hummingbird profile made by enlarging a cropped segment of the image captured using my camera.

I saw plenty of Anna's Hummingbirds during my week visiting San Marcos, California. Apparently these birds are up and down the coastline stretching as far north as Canada. But it's a new bird to me and I was pleased to capture some nice examples of these beauties! Here a male takes a restful break from his frenzied quest for food. There's some nice light on his gorget and you can clearly see the iridescent feathers on his brow.

The place is highly sacred to the Bhutanese in that they believe Guru Rinpoche, the father of Bhutanese Buddhism landed here on the back of tigress.

This is one I've been working on for some time, it's gone through a few different versions and after a lot of on and off work is finally done. I always struggle with favourites, but Return of the Jedi might be my favourite Star Wars movie and the whole Jabba sequence at the start of the movie might be my favourite moment in the movie.

The thousand-year-old wild olive (Olea Silvestris) of Santu Baltolu di Carana are in an extraordinary landscape complex between the granitic mountain and the shore of Liscia Lake. The oldest one has a trunk 20 meters round. To surround the trunk 12 people arms are needed and its foliage covers a surface of 600 metres.

According the dendrochonology based dating made by Sassari and Paris University, this natural monument of almost 4000 years old is one of the oldest trees of Europe.

***************************************************************************

The wood stork is a large American wading bird in the stork family. It appears all white on the ground, with blackish-gray legs and pink feet. In flight, the trailing edge of the wings is black. The head is dark brown with a bald, black face, and the thick down-curved bill is dusky yellow. Juvenile birds are a duller version of the adult, generally browner on the neck, and with a paler bill. The bare head and the long bill, which can measure up to ten inches in length, render the wood stork distinctive from other large waders in its range.

19/04/2017; A skyline that never seems to get boring. :)

...................................

Anyway, time to come with some sad news, as I have come to the decision to drastically cut back my activity on Flickr. Not that I have been incredibly active on Flickr in the past months in the first place, as I have mostly switched to Instagram. Which comes with its own downsides, but in general, it rather suits me than Flickr still does.

For starters because there's more activity on Instagram, and there's no such thing like Explore over there, which is more about being able to beat the algorhythm than it is about the quality of the photos. And apart from that, I would like to give 500px a go, however unfortunately I can't properly spend any time in that, as I'm still being distratced by the little bit of what I'm actually still doing with and on Flickr.

I won't be gone completely whatsoever though, pretty sure I'll come and check some stuff out over here still. If only because despite what made me not like Flickr as much anymore as I used to, I also don't want to just throw away the network I have been building up the past 9 years. It has been that very same network (ergo; all of you folks :) ) that actually still kept me on here while having been in doubt for pretty much the past year.

So while I'll keep uploading photos on a daily basis over here up and until July 16th, and I may continue to upload work over here but just not as regularly, please check me out on Instagram, my website, 500px (mostly for in the future), or my Facebook photo page. If you'd like to add me on Facebook, you can find me here, or if you are fine with me adding you, please tell so and I'll send you a friend request if you tell me how I can find you (as far as that isn't clear enough). :)

Lud's Church is an immense natural cleft in the rock on the hillside above Gradbach, in a forest area known as the Black Forest in the Peak District. The feature has been formed by a landslip which has detached a large section of rock from the hillside, thus forming a cleft which is over 15 metres high in places and over 100 metres long, though usually only a couple of metres wide.

Over the ages this place has offered shelter to all sorts of renegades and there is a tradition that Robin Hood used it. However, it is fairly certain that the Lollards (followers of John Wycliffe, an early church reformer, who were condemned as heretics) used it as a place of worship in the early 15th century, giving the place its current name.
