Right next to the main road over Alnwick Moor in Northumberland is Corby's Letch waterfall. After the recent rainfall it had a decent flow of water although the watercourse has tree branches in it presumably from Storm Arwen a few weeks ago.

Martin's Landing is a boat ramp on the Edisto River in rural South Carolina, north of Highway 17. On this day I walked the banks, mindful that an enormous alligator had been caught not that far away and that the deadly canebrake rattlesnake will swim its waters. Today, there was no one or nothing here but me and some golden winter light. Summer will be soon around again and the picture will look completely different, the warm browns and golds to be replaced by humid, steamy greens.

MacLeod’s Stone is more than 3 metres tall and stands on a small hill at the north end of the beautiful Traigh Iar beach on the west coast of the Isle of Harris, overlooking the small island of Taransay.

Erected more than 4,500 years ago, its purpose is now unclear but it may have been part of a calendrical system or it may just have been a navigational aid to guide boats into the bay.

It was later named after the local clan chief and was possibly a rallying point for the clan.

Thanks for taking the time to view and comment on my photographs – it is greatly appreciated and encouraging!

From our first and only visit so far to magnificent Wistman's wood. This is one of the few photos I managed to take at the very edge of the woods before the heavens opened and we were forced to retreat. The ancient forest with its gnarly oak trees can be found in the middle of Dartmoor National Park. The high altitude of the moorland causes the trees to grow so slowly and knobbly.

Here's another view of the Woodhead Road from a different location, this particular bend known as "Devil's Elbow", in the High Peak, Derbyshire. Unfortunately, from this height and position you don't get to see the full bend in the road, which is particularly sharp.

As with the previous photo "Woodhead Road" all I have done is mess around with (simple) blurs and over saturation of colours.

This is the most cooperative Cooper's hawk I have ever seen. I walked all around him/her and watched it for an hour from a distance of 20 to 40 feet. He is sitting on a brush pile waiting for sparrows to forget that it is there, which they did four times exposing themselves to him, but he missed all four times. He chased a couple of birds that were in nearby trees and flew by so close several times that I could have reached out and touched him. Each time he he attempted to capture a bird he returned to the brush pile. I went in the house and returned several time, once to get my tripod. He was here from about 8:30 to noon. I left at noon so I don't know if he captured a meal but he was not here at 2:30 this afternoon when I returned home. IMG_0739

I went on a short hike along Hornbeck's Creek to photograph Indian Falls, but the water level was so low that it was very unimpressive and not photogenic. However, just down from the falls was this scene of the meandering creek through the woods that I thought was nice. You never know what you might find as long as you open to the possibilities.

I'm guessing it was a Daubenton's as it was flying in daylight?

Every afternoon, dozens of Lorikeets come to my yard to feast on the fruit I provide for them (it costs a small fortune, they eat a lot of fruit in 5 hours, but I don't mind). Other birds also come, so it's a free-for-all feast, while I dice and slice in the kitchen.

Lorikeets are as noisy as they are colourful, and they have quite a few young who they have this week started bringing to my yard. In the opening sequence, an adult bird sits on my gutter with a juvenile. Watch the interaction between them and see the adult give the juvenile permission to fly to the tree.

There's no earth shattering story here, just 90 seconds of Lorikeet action recorded in my yard yesterday afternoon. I hope you will enjoy my visitors as much as I do.

The SS Sicamous was launched in 1914 and for many years connected rail lines and towns on Okanagan Lake. Built by the Canadian Pacific Railroad, the vessel operated until 1937 and is currently beached as a part of a heritage shipyard operated by the S.S. Sicamous Restoration Society in Penticton. The ship is 200 feet long (61 metres) and was the largest ship plying the waters of Okanagan lake. The ship had five decks when built and in 1935 two of the decks were removed, turning the ship to mainly a cargo carrier.

Located between the Perseus and Sagittarius arms of our galaxy, is the Orion spur . This minor arm is home to our solar system, and named for its most prominent constellation, Orion. Although the sword asterism appears as a line of 3 stars, below Orion's belt, it actually contains a massive molecular cloud where new stars are being born. At approx. 30-40 light years in diameter, its far from being the largest in our galaxy; however, it's close proximity (1.3k ly) makes it the brightest in the northern hemisphere.

" That's life (that's life) that's what people say

You're riding high in April

Shot down in May

But I know I'm gonna change that tune

When I'm back on top, back on top in June

I said, that's life (that's life) and as funny as it may seem

Some people get their kicks

Stompin' on a dream

But I don't let it, let it get me down

'Cause this fine old world it keeps spinnin' around

I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate

A poet, a pawn and a king

I've been up and down and over and out

And I know one thing

Each time I find myself flat on my face

I pick myself up and get back in the race

That's life (that's life) I tell ya, I can't deny it

I thought of quitting, baby

But my heart just ain't gonna buy it

And if I didn't think it was worth one single try

I'd jump…".

Although this was BNSF in 1997 and power was starting to mingle especially in California because of the Oregon Trunk, it was still possible to catch solid Santa Fe power sets. Unlike the S-RICH of 1/11 previously posted that had 5 blue and yellow EMD's, the S-RICH for 1/12/97 was solid was bonnet. I picked it up over near the loop and with the thickening"white wispies", I came over here to Coyote Hill as TLS calls it. I ended up chasing it our into the desert because of the failing weather in Tehachapi.

I'm pretty sure this is a Cooper's hawk juvenile because of the yellow eyes. If someone knows otherwise, let me know.

This hawk sat on one of the poles I hang my feeders on and I'm sure he was just waiting and watching, hoping too, to nab himself a little bird but it just wasn't happening. They all stayed far away from the feeders while he was here. Smart little birds

Wright's Tower in the Middlesex Fells Reservation just north of Boston.

We got there at about 4:30 and ran into some park rangers about to lock it up. They were nice enough to let us go up and see the view first, and they said that they usually close it "by 5", and also close it if it's raining. But, if you get there after its closed, you can still get a good view of the skyline from some nearby rocks.

Baillon’s Crake

Scientific Name: Porzana pusilla

Like most species of crakes and rails, Baillon’s Crake is a denizen of swamps and other wetlands. Although they are rather secretive and skulk about among the vegetation at the margins of these wetlands, sometimes they can be seen dashing across floating aquatic plants. When they run, they have a peculiar crouching posture, but at other times, they walk slowly with their head down and tail held erect and constantly flicked.

Description: The upperparts of a Baillon’s Crake are a rich cinnamon-brown, with black streaks and white spots on the back and wings. They are generally light grey below, with a white belly that has dark barring, which extends onto the undertail. The bill is greenish, as are the legs and feet, while the eye is bright red.

Similar Species: The Australian Spotted Crake is much darker, with dark-brown upperparts and dark-grey underparts.

Distribution: Baillon’s Crakes are mostly found in south-eastern and south-western Australia, with records at scattered sites elsewhere throughout the country. The species also occurs in New Zealand, South East Asia, Eurasia and southern Africa.

Habitat: Baillon’s Crakes inhabit vegetated wetlands, usually with fresh or brackish water, including swamps, billabongs, lakes and reservoirs and temporarily inundated areas. They often prefer wetlands with floating aquatic vegetation.

Feeding: While foraging, Baillon’s Crakes pack at insects, crustaceans, snails and other small invertebrates on areas of open mud at the margins of wetlands, among fringing vegetation, or from floating aquatic plants.

Breeding: Five or six pale-brown eggs are usually laid in a shallow cup or platform made from dry rushes, grass or waterweed, placed among tussocks at the margin of the wetland. Both sexes incubate and both guard the young birds.
