Scavenge Challenge March 2012 - "6. Look for unusual or rustic door and cabinet hardware, i.e., hinges, handles and knobs."
Drove through another part of town today and discovered this set of garage doors, which certainly qualify as unusual for where I live!
Stopped, rolled down the window, snapped the shot, and was gone - thankful I didn't have to get out and brave the (much needed) rain.

The mission's Christmas tree is the dried stalk of a century plant flower. It has great shape and texture, and serves well as a stand-in for the more traditional conifer in a place where no such trees are available.

I finally got my D90!
Right after I graduated (and got scads of money), I ordered my new camera off of ebay!
It took like a week to get here.... The shipping was way too slow. My parents went to Utah for about a week and brought the D40: the camera I used to use. Meanwhile, I sat at my desk looking at others' work while fuming about not having a camera.
I'm happy now, though!
In case you're wondering, I did make the bowls in the picture.
It's a test shot, but I thought it looked cool enough.

This Rustic Pile is a monument created by veterans of the 1864 Battle of New Market, Virginia. The monument was erected in 1909 by the surviving members of Confederate Captain Charles Hugh Woodson’s Company A, First Missouri Cavalry. It marks the location in the Bushong orchard where the Confederate line formed for attack.
This rustic pile
The simple tale will tell:
It marks the spot
Where Woodson’s Heroes fell.
The story of “Woodson’s Heros” – Company A, First Missouri Cavalry – and their unusual path to New Market is told on the nearby wayside marker, “Good-bye, Lieutenant, I am killed.”

Scavenge Challenge September 2012 - "25. Last month, we delicately applied post-processing to improve our photos. This month, we're going to take that a step further and render an image into an artistic version using a heavier hand. Again, photos should be presented as a diptych, side by side for comparison. The challenge you face here is to create something which is visually appealing to a general audience, NOT a garish, over-the-top alteration. Two options to consider: stylizing (rendering as a painting or sketch) or adding a texture to your original image."
Ok… fuzzy wording ("heavier hand") has me scratching my head. To much? Not enough?
We'll try THIS picture and see if it flies.
Obviously, the top shot needed some serious work, although low exposure has benefits if you know ahead of time you want to add in texture/grain. In addition to fiddling with exposure, I pulled on curves and levels, applied vignette, sharpness (more sharpness, yet more sharpness), plus some lightening (of the side of the pan) and polarizing (of the backdrop to kill some of the sheen that developed when I upped the exposure).
If I had to do it over again, I would have tried a small reflector on the pan or just gone with a higher exposure and hoped I could get enough "grain" using sliders, as the black was pretty much a black hole as taken.
All was done in Aperture 3.

It's hard to tell on the plain white background, but this Rustic Sphinx moth is huge -- more than big enough to cover the palm of my hand. They can be up to three inches long, front to back. Besides that, they have a really striking and complex pattern. This was the first one I'd ever seen in person, and it was really impressive.
Rustic Baubles
These truly stunning bauble bundles make unique and beautiful Christmas decorations. Each bundle is made up of 6 baubles, all hand made from recycled glass and tied together with recycled 'Kantha' saris.
All Nkuku glass is 100% recycled. This not only saves energy (50% less energy than that required to make new glass) but is an ongoing process, as glass can be recycled continually. This means we can create new beautiful and useful objects with less impact on our environment.
