The McMichael Collection is housed in rustic-styled buildings using stone and wood. The collection began in the early 1950's as the personal art collection of the McMichael family in their contemporary rustic log home in Kleinburg Ontario, a small town about 20 km. (15 miles) north of Toronto.
By 1965, the home became a major tourist attraction and the family deeded the house, land and art collection to the Government of Ontario. The original log home has been added onto several times and each addition has respected the rustic origins of the gallery buildings. In the Grand Foyer, the log timber walls and cedar plank ceiling form interesting textural patterns at their convergence.
More information on the history of the Collection is available at: www.mcmichael.com/about/history.cfm
A gabion basket filled with pebbles and topped with a timber seat made from salvaged timbers from the old Weston-super-Mare Pier that was destroyed by fire.
It over-rose, so I did not attempt to slash the top, as I normally do. The already tender surface yielded an interesting pattern in the oven. Cornmeal sprinkled on before the final rise added to the effect. We'll check it out tomorrow at breakfast! Multi-grain sourdough; my leaven.

As a rustic addition to your birdhouse collection or as a home for our feathered friends, this birdhouse is a unique addition. The large size, 14 inches wide and 14 inches tall, the spindled tin top and the wide star design makes it a focal point. St Leonard's church at Yarpole is unusual in a number of ways, most noticeably for its detached bell tower or campanile which greets the visitor at the churchyard gate. Yarpole's belfry consists of a squat stone structure from which arises a remarkably rustic 14th century timber tower with a pyramid-cap, supported within by a forest of raw timber beams.
The church itself stands beyond, nave, north aisle and chancel all somewhat restored in the Victorian period. Within the attractive interior is obviously well loved and maintained and is an unusually lively space, owing to the conversion of the west end of the nave (along with much of the north aisle) to use as a village shop and post office, with a cafe are above in the gallery-like space. This work has been a great success and has ensured the church remains in use as a vital asset to the village and a hub of the local community. The remainder of the nave and chancel meanwhile remain otherwise unaffected and in regular use for worship.
The church is always open during normal hours and a good place to relax if like me you've arrived by cycling on a hot day!

Alexis and Michael were married on a perfectly glorious day at Gum Gully Farm. I have made a few cakes for Alexis now so have a history going back a few years, but this was the first time we actually got to meet in person. The whole family are beautiful! It's not often we run into anyone other than staff when setting up our cakes, so it was lovely to get to see the mother of the bride again, the bridesmaids and even 'Dad' and I had a long chat about his overseeing role of the cakes deconstruction and how to take care of the caricatures we made of Michael and Alexis on top :) The top tier of this cake was vegan, separated by a riser full of flowers. Both tiers being chocolate mud full of raspberries and buttercream! The cake was decorated to match the colour scheme of the bouquets and table decorations. I wish this lovely couple nothing but pure joy and happiness in their married life, Leah.
