Some old logging equipment placed around the main street of town as decorations.

So you think you can come up with a better title? Well, let me see your suggestion:)

“If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” - Wayne Dyer

That statement is so true, and doubly so for photographers, I think. A couple of years ago, I would have walked across this bridge in downtown Austin, paying absolutely no attention to the rusty railing. Now I find myself looking at everything "through the lens", whether I have my camera with me or not. Photography has caused me to slow down, look at everything and see what was never visible to me before. It really has opened up my eyes. Plus it's great fun!

Old rusting trucks hanging out at Jawbone Flats, leftover from the mining days of the 1940s.

Jawbone Flats was established as a mining camp in the 1920s. It gets its name from the fact that while the miners were out in the mines during the day, their wives would gossip, or "jawbone", during their daily activities in town. The mining camp was shut down in the 1940s when the mining proved to be less than profitable. Shiny Rock Mining Company operated out of Jawbone Flats from 1972 to 1992.

Thanks to Senator Mark Hatfield, this area became protected as the Opal Creek Scenic Recreation Area in 1996, along with the Opal Creek Wilderness, which lies adjacent. Since this area includes old growth trees, Jawbone Flats is home to the Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center, and educational groups and individuals can come to study and learn about this ancient forest. No private vehicles are allowed here; you have to hike in 3.5 miles. In addition, the old buildings, artifacts, and equipment here are protected by federal law.

The crew get the OK to get on board !

bike #4 The bikes on the boardwalk are prone to rust, this frugal bike rider also added a taped on headlight. But for many, this is their only form of transportation and a little ingenuity is needed.

I had some fun out in Enumclaw, WA. There are these abandoned RR tracks there and usually several surplus train cars there.

It's a treasure trove of rust!

Cool rust on the side of a dilapidated building in Isleton California.

This huge machine part is quietly rusting away on a patch of waste ground in Mill Street in Watchet. I've no idea what it is, but it is huge - taller than me! Perhaps it is an old part of the nearby paper mill, or maybe it had something to do with the Mineral Line Railway which ran near here.

the rusty drum and water

A large water drum (I think) made for another great rust and metal study. 02-11-08
