Backstage as Santa Cruz Shakespeare presents “Pericles”. The play by William Shakespeare and George Wilkins runs through Aug. 30 at the Audrey Stanley Grove at DeLaveaga Park, and is directed by Santa Cruz Shakespeare Artistic Director Charles Pasternak, featuring Paige Lindsey White in the title role. “Pericles” is a late romance by The Bard that continues this year’s local festival’s sweep into the mythic. The first half of this rarely performed play follows Prince Pericles’ journey through multiple kingdoms, wild adventures, desperate escapes, a magnificent love affair, a pair of storms at sea and a single shipwreck. The second half shifts some 14 years later to Pericles’ daughter, Marina, who must survive her own trials: an assassination attempt, an abduction by pirates and the violence of a brothel. By the power of her kindness, wit and virtue, she rises above each of these dangers, finally meeting her father. According to the festival’s program, “The reunion of Pericles and Marina is one of the most beautiful scenes Shakespeare ever wrote. We cannot survive alone; the coming together of father and daughter is the rebirth of a world. The play ends, indeed, with another incredible rebirth; in love and unity, miracles are possible.”

Founded in 2014 as a newly independent theatre company, SCS continues a 40-year tradition of staging bold productions of the plays of Shakespeare and other great playwrights. Throughout our history, hundreds of thousands of people, young and old, have been enthralled, engaged, and energized by what we bring to the community. Inspired by Shakespeare, we create and strengthen our community by bringing audiences and theatre artists together to celebrate stories about our collective humanity. Matching a fearless aesthetic with transparent financial responsibility, SCS is passionate about theatre that is inclusive, inquisitive, and that engages with the contemporary moment. In a true repertory company, actors play parts in most (or all) of the productions offered in any given season. Once each of the shows opens, it enters a schedule of rotating performances, so productions of multiple plays can be seen in a single week.

Along with Pericles the 2025 Santa Cruz Shakespeare season includes A Midsummer Night’s Dream, by William Shakespeare Into the Woods, music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, book by James Lapine; licensed by Music Theatre International and “Master Harold"...and the Boys, by Athol Fugard (Shmuel Thaler - Santa Cruz Sentinel)

(See links). Cloudland Canyon State Park is in northwest Georgia, on the western edge of Lookout Mountain. Boulder-strewn Sitton Gulch Creek cuts a deep gorge into the mountain. Sitton's Gulch Trail runs parallel to the creek. The short, steep Waterfalls Trail, with stairs down into the canyon, leads to Cherokee Falls and Hemlock Falls, where water cascades down into pools. Nearby, Sitton’s Cave has mineral formations.

Located on the western edge of Lookout Mountain, Cloudland Canyon is one of the largest and most scenic parks in the state. Home to thousand-foot deep canyons, sandstone cliffs, wild caves, waterfalls, cascading creeks, dense woodland and abundant wildlife, the park offers ample outdoor recreation opportunities.

Hiking and mountain biking trails abound. The most popular hiking paths include the short Overlook Trail, strenuous Waterfalls Trail and moderate West Rim Loop Trail. Mountain biking is available at the newly developed Five Points Recreation Area and along the Cloudland Connector Trail. The park also includes an 18-hole disc golf course, wild caves available for touring during select months of the year, a fishing pond, trails for horseback riding, picnicking grounds and numerous interpretive programs, especially on weekends.

Guests seeking an overnight experience can choose from fully-equipped and comfortable cottages, quirky yurts or several different types of camping and backpacking options. Come enjoy the great outdoors at Cloudland Canyon State Park.

I came up upon a hedgehog that looked quite thin and hungry. Too bad I didn't have any tasty snacks or cat food for it. What surprised me was that the hedgie didn't mind my presence at all, but preferred to dig around, sniff alot and chase things I couldn't see.

Kevin Cislo (19), Nate Recknagel, and Zach Putnam (3) all meet at home after they all came around to score on Putnam's homerun. I think Putnam's about to punch Cislo's batting helmet here. Because obviously that's a valid homerun celebration.
