This time of summer I seldom have to sit outside in my backyard very long to find an interesting bird or animal to get a few photos of . A couple of bird feeders attract a variety of birds as well as squirrels and even Deer. For the deer I put out a daily bowl of corn which off course is also stolen by the chipmunks squirrels, rabbits and even some of the birds. its a hungry bunch with many of the deer squirrels rabbits and chipmunks being daily regulars, So here is an Aug collection in no particular order of some of my backyard buddies.

I received a reliable tip this weekend that there were a number of hummingbirds frequently visiting the back patio at the Douglas Lodge restaurant in Itasca State Park, MN, so I drove there yesterday and got a few shots.

I had to crank up my ISO setting on my camera to 800 to try to reduce the shutter speed as much as possible since I was trying to freeze the wings. This shot's speed in 1/2000 sec.

A ruby throated hummingbird is about to bury it's head into the trumpet vine flower to get to the nectar.

It's catch as catch can with them this week. There are so few left, so I have to grab the camera and just shoot. This was taken through the storm door glass.

(Archilochus colubris) The only hummingbird that has a natural range in Vermont. These are my first in my lifetime hummingbird photos and wouldn't you know it? That hair is on the glass!!!

They are so fast. I just sat on the deck with the camera on the feeder.....snapping away as soon as he came in!

Such cool little birds.

Canon EF 28-135 is certainly not a lens to capture this bird. But it was a good experiment to try.
