Hummingbirds are back in Central Kansas 8/3/18

I really don't know what I'll do when my hummingbirds leave. I have discovered that if I stand very still (and act like a tree) lol that they will come in close and "pose"! I don't even mind the 95+ degree heat ! If I "had" to be outside I'd be complaining all the time!

It's funny how that works! Have a great day everyone.

This guys stop by after a chase

This series is of the Ruby Throated Hummingbirds that took up residence in and around my back yard and garden this past Summer.

I found it amazing how perceptive these little creatures are. They would fly rite up in front of me and hover when I would enter their space . I think to say please leave my space, or hover and feed within a few feet of were I sat or stood, but point a camera in their direction and poof they were gone. Still I have managed to get a few pics of them . here are a few of my favorites.

This little guy hides in our crabapple tree and waits till mom finishes a round at the feeder. Then he darts down before she returns. Otherwise she scolds him badly.

Ruby-throated Hummingbird, immature

"Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are bright emerald or golden-green on the back and crown, with gray-white underparts. Males have a brilliant iridescent red throat that looks dark when it’s not in good light." Cornell

Hanging out at one of my nectar feeders.

Male Ruby-throated Hummingbird standing guard over the feeders preventing access by other hummers. I think one of them may even be the female. I see other feeders where lots of birds are feeding, but not here.

Notice the tiny toes! :-)

I had the opportunity to spend some time with a few beautiful Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. I went back a few days and felt I had understood somewhat of their patterns. It allowed me to plan for this particular shot, where the bird would contrast against an almost black background.

The hummingbirds appear quite happy with my re-arranged bird-feeders. And, the mid-sized birds appear to be happy with their new feeder now that I have moved it to the deck. I'm not so sure about the squirrels' state of mind. They are studying the situation while I contemplate near-cruelties in the event they re-assert themselves. Charlotte, North Carolina, USA
