This segment of road was part of the 1926 to 1930 alignment of Route 66 near Alburn, Illinois.
After Route 66 was realigned in 1930, this section briefly reverted to its State Route 4 designation before being abandoned in a 1932 relocation of the State road. About 1.5 miles of the section, known as the Auburn Brick Road, was incorporated into the 1932 modifications and resurfaced by hand with brick at the same time.
Today, this section of brick road is listed n the National Register of Historic Places.

Billboards once stretched along Route 66 telling travelers of the dozens of motels in this small town in eastern New Mexico. Nowadays the signs are all on I-40 which has bypassed Tucumcari altogether. While this particular motel is certainly vintage, the owners have chosen to replace the orginal sign...and possibly the name as well. The base rate of $25.99 is less than one-third the cost of lodgeing along the Interstate highway.
