Male Woodcocks make display flights over their territories at dusk in Spring, and this display is known as roding. You don't usually see any of the amazing plumage in this light as all you see is a pigeon-sized dark shape flying with surprisingly slow wingbeats. They fly around their territory in large circuits so often reappear in the same place every five minutes or so. They are not particularly easy to spot as the light is always fading but fortunately they draw attention by making an amazing noise. You only hear a low growling noise if you are close but these growls are interspersed with a far-carrying, high-pitched noise that sounds like a Pixie sneezing. Here is a recording from Latvia and as the birds are always moving as they call you only hear the low growls a few seconds in between the sneezes as the bird flies close: xeno-canto.org/669062 If you look closely at my photograph you can see it has its beak open so was calling at the moment I took it.
I took this photograph in late May this year but forgot about it as I was busy uploading photographs from the Isle of Skye at that time. I have tried many times to photograph roding Woodcocks but this is only the second time I have managed a half decent result. My first attempt seven years ago did show more plumage detail but I was using flash at that time, which I no longer use when photographing wildlife. Here is my earlier attempt: www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/14123819138/in/photolist
