Inside the office building "De Rode Olifant" (The Red Eliphant).
De Rode Olifant was built in 1924 for The American Petroleum Company (since 1947 Esso) by the architects J.H. de Roos and W.F. Overeijnder. The original name of the building was "Petrolea". The name had to be changed when Esso left the building around 1990 and a law firm started to use it. Now it's called "The Red Eliphant" after a sculpture of an eliphant at the facade of the building.
The current user of the building is "Spaces" a collection of smaller offices.
Dit opvallende gebouw van rode baksteen in Amsterdamse School-stijl staat aan het eind van de Utrechtsebaan, tegenover het Malieveld. Het gebouw werd als hoofdkantoor van de oliemaatschappij Esso gebouwd en heeft een kantooroppervlak van ruim 10.000 m². Het werd in 1921 ontworpen door Herman de Roos en Willem Overeijnder. De officiële naam is 'Petrolea'; de toren, versierd met een olifant van natuursteen, is 56 m hoog. Het moest hoger worden dan het Shell-kantoor aan de Wassenaarseweg.
Het interieur is in Art Deco afgewerkt met veel steen, glas-in-lood, kersenhouten lambriseringen en parketvloeren. De grote ontvangsthal heeft een fraai gebogen glas-in-lood plafond.
The Roding is powerded by a BMW engine. Therefore Dähler is the right place to get some extra whp. The R1 was shot in front of the Paul-Klee Museum near Bern.
Milan, Le Cisalpin, Simplon Tunnel, Brig, 10 Mar 1980
10 March 1980 was a Alpine tunnel trifecta for me. I rode from Luzern to Milan via the Gothard Tunnel, and then back via the Simplon and Lotschberg Tunnels.
This album is the Milan to Brig leg of the trip through the Simplon Tunnel. I rode TEE Le Cisalpin, which ran on an afternoon and dinner time schedule from Milan to Paris. It was a French train of Budd Gran Comfort equipment and looked like what SP might have done if they'd had Budd build the Shasta Daylight and given it the stainless steel and red stripe Sunset scheme.
I took a few shots in Milan between the time I arrived on the train from the Gothard line and Le Cisalpin left. I didn't take too many photos from the train on the run to Brig as the windows were all sealed and there were several other people in the compartment.
At Brig, I got off Le Cisalpin to connect to the Bern-Lotschberg-Simplon. Again, I didn't have a long layover, but there was a fair bit of activity before my BLS train left.
The glint shot of Le Cisalpin leaving Brig is a rip off of Ted Benson's photos of the last CZ on the line west of Tracy. I admit it.

I finally got outside for a photograph and headed out to Berners Roding for some sunset action. It was OK but nothing special, turning round to go back to the car and I saw the moon had appeared - far more interesting. This is a 5 bracket HDR fo those who are interested in such details.
Construction work on the Damrak's new tram tracks, looking towards Amsterdam Central Station.
The Damrak and Rokin in Amsterdam are (still) one big construction site with work being done for the Noord-Zuidlijn metro, as well as the "Rode Loper" (red carpet) project, upgrading the main arteries into the city to the 21st century, with wide tree-lined sidewalks for ultimate pedestrian strolling pleasure.
Seriously though, the concepts look pretty sweet!
