Fisgard Lighthouse (1860) stands at the entrance to Esquimalt Harbour. It is next to Fort Rodd. Together, they constitute a Canadian National Historic Site. Fort Rodd was a coastal defence installation established during World War I and active through World War II and beyond. The building in the foreground is made to look like a boathouse but in actuality it housed a powerful search light that was intended to detect and illuminate targets for the forts guns.

The Site was a 19th century artillery fort on the coast of Vancouver Isaland near Esquimalt Harbour, approximately 15 kilometers from downtown Victoria, B.C.

The Fort is adjacent to Fisgard Lighthouse the first lighthouse on the west coast of Canada.

At the beginning of World War II plans were made to upgrade the defences at Fort Rodd Hill due to the age and obsolescence of the guns in place at that time - and the risk of invasion - must of worked; no one showed up on the beaches.

Fisgard Lighthouse at Fort Rodd Hill.

Still operational since it was built in 1860, Fisgard Lighthouse guides ships into Esquimalt Harbour, home base for the Royal Canadian Navy. The lighthouse was automated in 1929 and is open to the public as part of the Fort Rodd Hill & Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites.

We arrived at the park rather late in the afternoon and were told that, although not far, and given I am nursing an injured knee, the walk to and from the lighthouse would take up most of the time that was left before closing. We decided to head for the nearest high ground - a rampart of Fort Rodd - to take whatever photos we could and return another day when there was more time.

About 25 minutes before closing, two park volunteers drove up in their modified golf cart saying they were there to give us a ride the rest of the way to the lighthouse so we could get some close-up photos, then would come back and pick us up to get us back up the hill before they locked the gates! The bonus was that, because of the late hour, nearly all the other visitors had already left the lighthouse, allowing us to photograph it people-free!

When the volunteers picked us up, along with another couple, they took us back by the scenic route, a narrow, dirt walking trail, providing us with historical details of each area we passed. By the time we reached the gate, we had made friends.

This is what brought us to Vancouver Island in the first place... the wonderful people! And, how beautiful it is.

The Fisgard Lighthouse is part of the Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Site of Canada located in Victoria, British Columbia. The Fisgard Lighthouse was the very first lighthouse put into operation on the west coast of Canada. The historic landmark was constructed in 1860 and posted at the entrance of the Esquimalt Harbour as an operational beacon, servicing the naval fleets of the British Royal Navy’s Pacific Squadron. For many years, a lighthouse keeper maintained the lighthouse until it was automated in 1929. Copyright © Kim Toews/All Rights Reserved.

On our first day in Canada we visited Fort Rodd an old artillery site that is located at the entrance to Esquimalt harbour. As we were walking on the causeway to the lighthouse I heard a wader flying high up. I managed to spot it but only as it was flying away down the coast. A few minutes later I heard it and this time I spotted it flying towards me and followed it as it landed on some rocks not far away. I hurried over and was able to sneak up on it until only a small (deep!) stretch of water separated us.
