I don't have a Christmas pic to post this year, but I wish all my Flickr Friends and Contacts a wonderful Christmas season and a healthy and prosperous New Year.

Auguro a me stessa di arrivarci come lui !! (Patrizia Molinari, Flickr, palabras sobre T. R.)

This bird was first found by my friend Ian Cruickshank yesterday at Ford Rodd Hill Lighthouse. I relocated it today at 1:30 pm in the same spot. It made it's Song Sparrow like call which you can hear here on the video I made by clicking this link:

Also bitte alle schön zu Hause bleiben :-)

After the threat of a storm of visitors in the Eifel in the last picture, I now show how it really is. So please all stay at home :-)

(Of course, everyone is invited to our home in the Eifel, for a coffee or a beer, preferably in the warmer and less virus-free season).

A Dark-eyed Junco pauses briefly with a trove of nesting material before taking it to add to a structure hidden among grasses on the ground. This bird was seen at Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Site near Victoria on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.

Built in 1860, Fisgard Lighthouse was the first lighthouse on the west coast of Canada and it is still in operation, though not manned anymore.

Fisgard Lighthouse

Strait of Juan de Fuca

Vancouver Island

Canada

The first lighthouse on Canada's west coast is still in operation. Fisgard Lighthouse is one of Canada's National Historic Sites. There hasn't been a keeper here since the light was automated in 1929, but every year many thousands of visitors step inside a real 19th century lighthouse and capture some of the feeling of ships wrecked and lives saved.

The Straight of Juan de Fuca almost always has a ship passing by, from small sailing vessels, to enormous cargo ships, and the proximity of the Canadian Navy base means that military craft of several nations can often be seen at close range.

Enjoyed paddling out to Rodd Island on the weekend - took my camera with me and got some nice long exposure pictures

Neil Young expressed in his album "Rust Never Sleeps":

"It's better to burn out

than it is to rust".

That may be true for people but not so much for objects.

On the theme of Vancouver Island, here is another perspective of the lighthouse that is part of the Fort Rodd Hill park we stayed at for a couple of nights. We were able to watch many activities happening in this passage way of the Pacific. We saw a huge Cruise Ship sail off at night. There were several freighters during the day as you can see if you zoom in, and a ship was anchored out from shore with all kinds of navy personnel being transported out to the ship in small water craft to do manoeuvres offshore. This was one of the more peaceful scenes just as the sun was setting.

Built in 1860, this was the first lighthouse on Canada's west coast. Though at the time it was built, British Columbia wasn't yet a part of Canada, not joining Confederation until 1871.

Back in the 19th century this small piece of land the lighthouse was situated on was remote and isolated, calling for a great deal of dedication from the lighthouse keeper and his family. The light was automated in 1927 and is still in operation, lighting the way into Esquimalt Harbour which is a home base for the Royal Canadian Navy.

I had a chance to revisit Fisgard Lighthouse this week. These red adirondack chairs have been placed in scenic areas of our National Parks as a place to slow down, to relax and to truly discover the best that Parks Canada has to offer. I think they chose the perfect spot.

A Mule Deer mother of triplets, decided to raise her fawns on the secure grounds of Fort Rodd Hill, BC. As a result, she became quite habituated to humans, and barely took notice when a scrimmage game lost control of the ball and it landed near her.

I only wish I hadn't clipped her ears. This shot is a few years old now, and I had at the time only just received my big lens. I wasn't yet used to it's reach with larger animals. I love the strange juxtaposition of the ball in the frame, and thought you'd enjoy it too.

A first for us with camping was staying overnight at a National Historic Site on Vancouver Island. There are about 5 Otentiks within the Fort Rodd Hill park just outside Victoria, BC. We stayed in one of them for two nights. It was off season so there were only one or two other campers staying at that time we were there. At 5:30pm the park staff close the gates around the whole park to the public, and only the campers were left inside to roam throughout the fort. It gave us some neat vantage points to shoot the lighthouse at night. It was so quiet. Although these raccoons came out at night, they were never a nuisance for campers. They seemed content to patrol the old ramparts of the fort.
