This little girl is on an antique chair with an old wedding veil draped over her face and time ticking away.

Remy bundled up on the rocking chair at our friend's family farm near Colrain, Mass. They hosted us at the farm for thanksgiving 2005.

My Rocking-Chair

Robert Service

When I am old and worse for wear

I want to buy a rocking-chair,

And set it on a porch where shine

The stars of morning-glory vine;

With just beyond, a gleam of grass,

A shady street where people pass;

And some who come with time to spare,

To yarn beside my rocking-chair.

Then I will light my corn-cob pipe

And dose and dream and rarely gripe.

My morning paper on my knee

I won't allow to worry me.

For if I know the latest news

Is bad,--to read it I'll refuse,

Since I have always tried to see

The side of life that clicks with glee.

And looking back with days nigh done,

I feel I've had a heap of fun.

Of course I guess that more or less

It's you yourself make happiness

And if your needs are small and few,

Like me you may be happy too:

And end up with a hope, a prayer,

A chuckle in a rocking-chair.

They didn't quite grasp the concept...

Wm C Holcomb was a master mechanic on the Illinois Central Railroad. He lived in Water Valley, Mississippi, in a small white frame house with green shutters and a big back addition added later. They called the lawn the "croquet ground." They had a black helper named Paralee who used to go out on Sundays and wring the necks of chickens for fried chicken dinner. Paralee had a nice family. Martha (my grandmother) stayed in touch with her younger brother, Toy, in Indianapolis, where he used to come over and help her with chores. (This is from Martha's recollection)

They built a home east of Water Valley, on a road that became East Street. He worked as a molder for the Illinois Central Railroad, where he made parts for the engines. He had a beautiful orchard and garden at home. (Taken from an article written by Jewell Holcombe Williams for the Yalobusha Co. History Book and forwarded to my mother by Betty Summers.)

Here is the 1920 Census report on their household:

Holcomb, William, head, home owned, free of mortgage, m, w, age 70, married, able to read and write, born MS, parents born SC, moulder, IC shops, wage worker.

Sarah, wife, f, w, age 63, married, age to read and write, born MS, parents born TN, no occupation

Jewell E., dau, f, w, age 28, single, born MS, parents born MS, clerk, IC office

Effie, dau-in-law, f, w, age 27, widowed, born AR, parents born MS, cler, IC office

Elizabeth, grand daughter, f, w, age 4, single, born MS, parents born MS

House no. is 186 East St. in Water Valley, Yalobusha, MS. Beat 2, Ward 4. Series T625, roll 901, page 154, Heritage Quest.

Sarah Lou was named, as was the custom in those days, after the confederate states. In the 1880 Census she is still at home with her parents.

Marriage: Jan 06, 1881, Water Valley, MS

An artistic rendition (Photoshopped) of a beautiful Maine farm house I shot this summer. Makes you want to grab a chair and sip a cold ice tea.

A porch scene in Learned, Mississippi.

We spray painted it a forest green.

It's made of solid walnut and has an amazing finish. A work of art no doubt.
