Die Balz ist ein sehr streng eingehaltenes Ritual. Sie beginnt normalerweise mit einem besonderen Flug und setzt sich am Boden durch das Umschreiten des Weibchens fort. Während des Fluges berühren sich oft die Flügel des Pärchens oder das Weibchen berührt mit ihren Fühlern die Flügel des Männchens. Die Paarungswilligkeit der Partner wird durch Duftstoffe verstärkt. Die männlichen wirken nur auf kurze Distanz, aber besonders die Nachtfalterweibchen locken die Männchen über große Entfernungen. Mit der Balz einher geht das Territorialverhalten der Männchen. Je nach Art werden bestimmte Bereiche wie beispielsweise Baumkronen und Hügelkuppen („Gipfelbalz“), Wegabschnitte oder kleine unbewachsene Stellen verteidigt.
