This was from a lightning / thunderstorm moving into Pittsburgh on March 15,2012 at night. Got some decent shots of lightning from in the yard at the house.

Fade To Black: Metallica, Ride The Lightning
Metallica has touched on a lot of rawness and emotion in their songs- a lot of anger, disparity and hurt… this song is perhaps one of the best known for that. This song speaks of the internal struggle of fading way and the feelings of hurt and depression taking over your mind and pulling you slowly away from the world you know.
We have all gone through this I am sure- some of us escape the claws of depression and some never do. Some of us fade in and out of being grabbed by those claws. There are many songs out there about depression and sadness… just about every country song out there for example. But this is one of those rare songs that really captures the feelings of both longing to be saved and the “get the hell away from me” emotion. The drive at the end is really the result of a long build up through the song. The intro riff still gets me in the gutt.
I remember listening to this song with a lot of darkness in my room, save for a single candle, during a very hard time in my life. I remember thinking through the concept that life can literally be snuffed out as simple as a candle… and yet life was not as easy to be re-ignited as a candle is… and any such thoughts of being snuffed out should never be entertained!
