New for model year 2017 was the Hyundai Ioniq, initially released in hybrid and electric versions, adding a plug-in variant in 2018. The hybrid version gets 55 to 58 miles per gallon depending on equipment, and is the most serious challenger to the supremacy of the Toyota Prius in the hybrid market.
The Hybrid Limited is the top trim level for the hybrid variant, and can be decked out with the Ultimate package which includes navigation, BlueLink telematics, wireless phone charging, and more. This fully loaded Ioniq stickers around $31,000.
The center stack. The interior is very conventional, which I like. Dual climate control is standard. The infotainment shows Korean (I always like to set infotainment to the language of the car's home country), and can also be set to English, French, and Spanish.
I still love my 2009 Hyundai Genesis, but due to excessive driving in stop-and-go city driving under rideshare duty conditions, the car has taken a lot of abuse. My goal is to never drive my own car for such services, but even then, a hybrid powertrain that uses electric power for the stop-and-go driving (which is normally the worst weakness of gasoline engines) is definitely a winning formula. Between the Ioniq being better than the Prius in many ways, and my hatred of Toyota in general and Prius in particular, the Ioniq is most likely to be my next car.

There has been a hybrid version of the Hyundai Sonata midsize sedan since 2011, and the 2018 model, on the LF platform, gets a facelift alongside the rest of the Sonata lineup. While non-hybrid Sonata models are assembled in Montgomery, Alabama, the hybrid models come from Hyundai's main Sonata assembly line in Asan, South Korea.
The engine bay shows a 2.0L gasoline engine paired to an electric motor. Power is delivered to the front wheels via a conventional 6-speed automatic transmission; I prefer this to the competitors' CVTs, which are slightly more efficient but are notorious for being whiny and vague.

This Sonata would be a nice way to stay in the Hyundai family and enjoy much of the poshness my Genesis offers, though I would cross-shop it against the Ford Fusion Hybrid, or Hyundai's own Ioniq Hybrid hatchback.

Dressed to go to the concert.
This band for evening's Gardens Magic Concert at the Wellington Botanic Gardens was Crash Bandihoot. I think I had seen them before and liked them. I arranged to go with my Meetup group.
Our buses are currently running on a Saturday service (due to a shortage of drivers). This means there is only one bus per hour to the station. My bus was cancelled. I went hoe, contacted one of the Meetup people going to the concert, another organiser. I told her I would be an hour late and arranged for her to take over my hosting duties.
One hour later I was back at the bus stop. That bus was cancelled too. I could have given up and gone home. My budget does not really run to taxis. But I was on my own at Christmas. I had to be on my own at New Year because I had Covid. Today is my birthday and I did not want to be on my own for this as well.
So I downloaded the rideshare app, Ola and found they could get a car to me in ten minutes to take me to the railway station. The train was delayed but I got to the Soundshell just before the concert started. There was just about space for me to sit with the group and we had an enjoyable evening.
Leaving after the concert I got a bus to the station a couple of minutes after I got to the bus stop. I got to the station as a train was boarding. There was a bus due from Porirua to home thirty minutes after I got there. Cool. I had a book to pass the time. I looked at the live information board. Bus cancelled. So the wait till the next one would be an hour an a half. Nope. Back to the Ola app. No car available. So I downloaded another app - Zoomy. Fortunately they had a car available.
It was a much more expensive night out that I had intended!

My trusty 2009 Hyundai Genesis, with over 254,000 miles on the clock, had deteriorated quite badly for the past few years due to excessive rideshare duty, but now that I have changed jobs and no longer have to abuse my car every day, I am catching up with badly needed repairs and upgrades. This photo was taken during a drive to Carlsbad Flower Fields, which was also a test drive of the car after those urgent repairs.
Major potholes and curbs took their toll on the front suspension, knocking out the control arm bushings and scraping the left front control arm itself badly. The car was turning into a death trap, and would squeak and groan through left turns. My late father's mechanic replaced all damaged components with new, on both sides of the front axle, for a very good price. This picture shows the replacement left front control arm. After the repair and an alignment adjustment, the car tracks and turns very straight and nice.

EcoBici is the bicycle sharing system launched in 2010 by the government of Mexico City. For approximately $30 USD a year, users can access the bicycles for free for up to 45 minutes. The program has expanded 444 stations with 6,000 bicycles. Daily ridership averages 25,000 and there are nearly 100,000 registered members.

From the first time that Virginia Key was named the replacement venue for Ultra Music Festival, after being removed from Bayfront Park, transportation has been one of its main issues. Ultra revealed shuttle and ferry options earlier this year, but ride share options remained scant.
Following a meeting this week at the city’s downtown administrative headquarters, the Miami Herald has published a report stating that Ultra might do away with ride shares altogether this year.
According to Ray Martinez, Ultra’s spokesman and security chief, Ultra has secured over 200 shuttles (the exact number is still being determined) to transport attendees from any of three shuttle stops in the city of Miami: the old Miami Herald site near the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, AmericanAirlines Arena and Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. Each bus can carry 55 passengers, allowing for approximately 11,000 attendees to be moved at maximum capacity at any one time.
Ferries will also be available for purchase (shuttles are free).
The issue, however, isn’t getting attendees to the festival — it’s getting them out. Attendees are expected to come to the festival at a steady rate throughout the day. “But the end of the night will create a new dynamic for Ultra,” writes the Herald, as up to 60,000 people leave each night.
“Uber’s number one concern is the safety of our driver-partners and riders,” said Javi Correoso, Uber spokesman. “The event’s location poses significant logistical challenges, which is why we have flagged concerns and made recommendations to establish a transportation plan that prioritizes safety and efficiency.”
“We have no idea whether it’s going to be one person using a rideshare company or 500,” said Key Biscayne Police Chief Charles Press. “Every car reduced from the causeway will help mitigate the traffic issues coming from the festival.”
No parking will be made available to general admission attendees, and “on-site parking will only be offered to staff, attendees requiring special accommodations, vendors and to a limited number of VIP ticket holders,” says Martinez.
Writes the Herald, “Karla Damian, a spokeswoman for the Miami-Dade Department of Transportation and Public Works department, told the Herald that Ultra submitted a traffic plan in February that is still pending approval from multiple government departments. County administrators still need schematics showing pedestrian walkways and fencing along the causeway’s median.”
