Made from Grandma's fabric and a thrifted bed sheet. Folded up, it fits into my purse.

PROBLEM: I have this old suitcase, which I think is really cool but I'm not sure what to do with it. I have some things that need a home but I don't want to go out and buy something.

SOLUTION: Heavenly Metal of Ann Arbor has just the solution. Use your old suitcase as a purposeful container. Here, owner Vicki Honeyman displayed reusable shopping bags.

HINT: Other items you could put in the suitcase: magazines, kid's schoolwork, or gift wrapping supplies.

When we had finished the yummy pork floss in these little bottles, I would reuse them, trying to reduce waste, to organize small amount of ingredients that I keep in the refrigerator.

Recycled and Reused

11 March 2013 -- 70/365

Warren, Rhode Island

Today was one of those days when none of the photo plans worked. What you see before you is a hastily taken "safety shot" during the most uncooperative lunch outing. It was a very nice day, weatherwise, so I decided to head to Colt State Park in Bristol at lunch. While crossing the Barrington Bridge, though, I spotted a woman kayaking. I know that she normally kayaks out to Colt, so I ducked down Water Street in Warren and stopped at the Town Wharf. My plan was to photograph her paddling past the empty mariner at the Town Wharf. For some reason, though, she cut her route short and I saw her looping around and island and heading back towards Barrington. By then it was too late to continue towards Colt, so I decided to try for her along the river. Just in case, I grabbed a very fast shot of the image you see in front of you.

Suffice it to say, I never saw her again. She wasn't visible from any of the road crossings across the river. I pulled into the boat ramp section along Route 114 where she normally puts in. Sure enough, her truck was there, but she was nowhere in site. I did take several photos from that location. The White Church was lost in haze, so that didn't work. A Victorian era house across the way was my next shot, but power lines ruined that photo. I did get a nice photo of a juvenile red-tailed hawk in flight, but that's hardly a Photo-a-Day candidate. After all that, I had to settle for my safety shot.

So what is this shot, you may ask? Well, it's a trash barrel at the Town Wharf in Warren. They decorated the barrel holder with an anchor and chain from a large yacht, and it's that decoration that I decided to make the centerpiece of today's photo. That also explains the "recycled and reused" caption. Fortunately, it does make a somewhat interesting b&w.

Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted the color sensitivity sliders followed by adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, details, boost black, boost white, and protect highlights. A levels, brightness, and contrast adjustment was added in PSE and it was topped off with a sepia photo filter.

Sometimes I have to go back to the car to get my bags, I like this new reminder in front of Trader Joe's.

The 3rd Annual Fashion Trashion event at the University of Minnesota, Morris. This event is run by the Studio Art folks, who have students in the intro 3-D studio course create costumes out of recycled, reused, or repurposed materials. This is a always a huge success, with lots of really creative work and a ton of fun for the audience.

Jess Larson is the MC, Jennie Nellis taught the course this year, and the judges are Troy Goodnough (Sustainability Coordinator), Jennifer Deane (History), Jacquie Johnson (Chancellor), Ray Schultz (Theatre), and Hilda Ladner (Multi-ethnic Programs)

This is what the center looked like after the renovation. Instead of purchasing new floor tiles and window panes, NCDOT recognized that the ones in the original facility were in good condition and could be reused in the renovated building. Doing so not only reduced the department’s carbon footprint, but it also saved vital taxpayer dollars.

One of the pinback button badge designs made by Zippy Pins, which is part of the Green Environment collection to build awareness for saving the earth's resources by doing things like living green, alternative energy (wind, hybrid, solar), supporting local farmers, recycle, reuse & reduce waste, think global & buy local, and everything else that will make the world a better place to live.

Although the subject matter is serious, some of the designs sayings are funny, clever, witty, humorous and sometimes irreverent - also available as magnets, zipper pulls and keychains.

Made for my mom who is an amazing sewer.

One of the most remarkable medieval carved coffin lids to have survived in a good state of preservation (thanks largely to its reuse as a floor slab in the south aisle and later rediscovery), this unusual piece dates from the early 14th century and features busts of the deceased couple beneath canopies with a crucifix and two doves below. The identity of the couple is unclear, but possible candidates are local landowners Walter de Beauchamp (d.1302) and is wife Alice (d.c1327).

If you were to make a list of the top churches in Worcestershire it's a safe bet to say St Giles' at Bredon would be one of them. It is a gem of a building, much of which dates back to Norman times (and the site is older still as a Saxon minster stood here) though it has been greatly modified and added to since, mainly in the 13th and 14th centuries.

The nave is the earliest part standing today, its west end still largely in its original Norman form (aside from the Perpendicular window inserted into it) but the remainder was pierced by Gothic arcades in the 13th century when the present substantial aisles were added on either side (but curiously for only two-thirds of its length). The central tower and spire belong to the following century, as does the handsome chancel beyond. The tapering steeple makes a fine landmark and the stonework is of the pleasant golden-hued variety that predominates here so close to the Gloucestershire border.

As a result of its complex building history the interior of the church seems more a collection of different spaces, the chancel and south aisle are bright and cheerful, the nave more subdued and mysterious. The light in the chancel draws the eye eastwards towards the focal point and reflects on an attractive tiled floor (some tiles in the chancel are fine medieval heraldic pieces, and there are elements of glass here of the same date). This is a church full of interest,. well worth exploring; there are some striking monuments, canopied medieval tombs in the chancel stand alongside a fascinating carved 14th century coffin lid featuring busts of the deceased above a crucifix, a remarkably rare survival. At the west end of the south aisle stands one of the largest and most elaborate early 17th century monuments in any church, its superstructure nearly touching the ceiling.

Bredon church is well worth visiting and was normally kept open and welcoming for that purpose in pre-Covid days. Hopefully it will be again once we get beyond this painful chapter.
