Wills Eye Hospital provided 2,000 pairs of free solar eclipse viewing glasses this morning. All of the glasses were gone by 10:00 a.m.
The first person in line arrived at 4:30 a.m. and was interviewed by several local TV stations. The line wound around the four corners, encompassing the hospital at Ninth and Walnut Streets.
A diverse group of individuals stood in line, reading, listening to music, taking selfies and attending to their pets, as they killed time before receiving their glasses.

Diabetic retinopathy, a condition caused by diabetes, occurs when the blood vessels in the back of the eye change. These vessels can weaken and leak fluid or abnormal vessels can grow on the surface of the retina, which may hemorrhage.

J, DD and I went to get our eyes checked today. Here is J at Wendy's rockin' the sunglasses the doctor gave him. No retinopathy, which is good, but he does need glasses this year due to slight myopia. He picked out some really cool frames with the help of our friend C, who is an optician.

You all know what this is. But doesn't it look like some kind of 19th century torture device? It *is* a torture device to me. However, I got good news today at my eye checkup thankfully; my little bit of retinopathy is still "dry", meaning no leakies and my retinas are hanging in there just fine.

Beware the Eyes of April…with the total solar eclipse, April 8, 2024, NHB/NMRTC Bremerton optometrist and ophthalmologist urge everyone viewing the celestial event to safely prepare and protect their vision from injury from following tips recommended by the American Optometric Association, such as using only approved solar eclipse viewers. The only safe way to view a partially eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as ‘eclipse glasses’ or viewers that meet international standard ISO 12312-2 for safe viewing. Sunglasses, smoked glass, unfiltered telescopes or magnifiers, and polarizing filters are unsafe. Inspect any type of eclipse glasses or handheld viewer before use – if torn, scratched, or otherwise damaged, discard the device. “Viewing an eclipse can be an amazing experience if done safely. However, looking directly at the sun without protection from the ultraviolet radiation can cause serious and permanent damage to the retina, including solar retinopathy, which can lead to vision loss,” remarked Cmdr. Wills Eye Hospital provided 2,000 pairs of free solar eclipse viewing glasses this morning. All of the glasses were gone by 10:00 a.m.
The first person in line arrived at 4:30 a.m. and was interviewed by several local TV stations. The line wound around the four corners, encompassing the hospital at Ninth and Walnut Streets.
A diverse group of individuals stood in line, reading, listening to music, taking selfies and attending to their pets, as they killed time before receiving their glasses.
Wills Eye Hospital was recently honored among the best Eye Hospitals in the country by U.S. News and World Reports: Best Hospitals.

The International Diabetes Federation stated in 2017 that more than 400 million people across the world suffer from diabetes. The number is rising every day and was projected to be around 629 million by 2045. The mere statistic of a large number of diabetic populations, along with the reliance on blood glucose monitoring devices, has propelled a tremendous growth in the global next-generation glucose monitor market. Retinal Imaging System
Retinal image of fluorescein angiogram (FA) done on a live, anesthetized 24 day old mouse exposed to 5 days of oxygen at one week of age. The image shows dilated and tortuous blood vessels, as well as obliteration of newly formed vessels. In vivo retinal imaging is a novel non-invasive method of studying Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) in a mouse model that shows unique abnormalities (arterial tortuosity, venous dilation, capillary sparsity) that were previously challenging to distinguish. ROP is an eye disease affecting premature newborns exposed to high levels of oxygen that can cause blindness.
