The superb fairywren (Malurus cyaneus) is a passerine bird in the Australasian wren family, Maluridae, and is common and familiar across south-eastern Australia. The species is sedentary and territorial, also exhibiting a high degree of sexual dimorphism; the male in breeding plumage has a striking bright blue forehead, ear coverts, mantle, and tail, with a black mask and black or dark blue throat. Non-breeding males, females and juveniles are predominantly grey-brown in colour; this gave the early impression that males were polygamous, as all dull-coloured birds were taken for females. Six subspecies groups are recognized: three larger and darker forms from Tasmania, Flinders and King Island respectively, and three smaller and paler forms from mainland Australia and Kangaroo Island. Like other fairywrens, the superb fairywren is notable for several peculiar behavioural characteristics; the birds are socially monogamous and sexually promiscuous, meaning that although they form pairs between one male and one female, each partner will mate with other individuals and even assist in raising the young from such pairings. Male wrens pluck yellow petals and display them to females as part of a courtship display. The superb fairywren can be found in almost any area that has at least a little dense undergrowth for shelter, including grasslands with scattered shrubs, moderately thick forest, woodland, heaths, and domestic gardens. It has adapted well to the urban environment and is common in suburban Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne. The superb fairywren eats mostly insects and supplements its diet with seeds. 25275

The Australian Hardhead duck (Aythya australis) is now considered a vagrant in New Zealand, but it apparently had a breeding population here until the late 1800s. Maori were aware of it, giving it the name karakahia. It now breeds only in Australia, but regularly ranges to the north, including to Indonesia (one breeding record), New Guinea, Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Norfolk Island. It is Australia’s only true diving duck and exhibits similar behaviour to the New Zealand scaup. Both male and female Australian hardhead ducks are uniform chocolate-brown with rufous flanks, an irregular white patch on the belly and a white undertail. The male has a distinctive white eye and a prominent white bar across the upper mandible of its bill. This white band is more subdued in the female, which has brown eyes. The Australian hardhead duck is a diving duck, and prefers large expanses of deep still water where it can dive for the water weeds and aquatic invertebrates that constitute its diet. It is mainly found in the south-east of Australia, particularly along the Murray-Darling watershed. S20N_267

The buses of Scotland - Stagecoach East Scotland

Stagecoach East Scotland is an operating region of Stagecoach UK Bus, with its regional base in Dunfermline in the Kingdom or Fife, Its legal operations come under "Fife Scottish Buses Ltd" although the company operates under six different brands:

Stagecoach began long distance express coach services in 1981 from its base in Perth, expanding into local bus operation when it bought McLennan Of Spittalfield in 1985. Deregulation of the British bus industry in 1986 gave Stagecoach the opportunity to expand in its home town, thus fierce competition with the dominant operator Strathtay Scottish began, which eventually saw Stagecoach's then Perth Panther subsidiary emerge as the largest provider of bus services in the Perth area, when Strathtay withdrew from Perth. On the breakup and privatisation of the Scottish Bus Group, Stagecoach was successful in acquiring two of the subsidiaries, namely Northern Scottish Omnibuses Ltd (in March 1991) and Fife Scottish Omnibuses Ltd (in July 1991). Allisons Coaches of Dunfermline was purchased in April 2000. Northern Scottish was renamed Bluebird Northern and Stagecoach Fife Scottish became known as Stagecoach in Fife.

In August 2003 the UK's first entirely commercial demand responsive bus service was launched by Stagecoach East Scotland in Fife. Trading as Yellow Taxibus and using the AA Buses Ltd legal name (transferred from Stagecoach West Scotland where it was purchased with the AA Buses operation in Ayrshire) the operation combined the benefits of a fixed bus route with the flexibility of pre-booked taxi pick-ups. Yellow Taxibus operated a fleet of eight-seater spacious, upmarket Mercedes Vito vehicles on a high-frequency service between Dunfermline and Edinburgh seven days a week; however after a two-year trial the loss making service was withdrawn in November 2005.

On 14 December 2005 Stagecoach purchased the largest remaining private bus company, Barnsley-based Traction Group, for £26m. Traction Group owned Strathtay Scottish, which Stagecoach had pushed out of Perth some 16 years earlier. The Strathtay operations bridged the gap between Stagecoach's Fife, Perth and Bluebird operations, giving the group a vast swathe of the country extending from Edinburgh through to Perth, northwards to Aberdeen and round to Inverness, with only Tayside Buses - Currently trading as Xplore Dundee - and First Aberdeen being the major non-Stagecoach operators within that area. Unusually, despite the Strathtay fleet receiving the corporate livery, they were initially branded as Strathtay with ‘Part of the Stagecoach Group’ straplines, rather than Stagecoach Strathtay or Stagecoach in Dundee/Angus, which was a break from the then current corporate practice.

In early 2007, Stagecoach in Perth started one of two Stagecoach Gold services as a trial for Stagecoach Group. They offer newer vehicles to a higher standard and are in a special gold and blue livery, Since the trails the Gold brand has expanded across the UK while the Perth service was upgraded with new Alexander Dennis Enviro350Hs.

In October 2007 The Fife operations so an invested £4.5 million in upgrading the Express Network as "Express City Connect". West Fife to Edinburgh routes received nine new Scania Omnilink Tri-Axle single-deckers with full leather trim and Wi-Fi Internet access. The rest of the Express network received 20 brand new Plaxton Profile Volvo B7R Coaches with full leather trim and Wi-Fi Internet access and were used on X24/X26 and X54 services, (which supplement the Volvo B7R Coaches brought in 2006 for X27 and X59 routes.) In 2011, new Plaxton coaches (with leather seats & Wi-Fi Internet Access) X59 routes were brought to help deal with the increase in passengers, with new stock also appearing in 2012, 2013 and 2016. This has resulted in the brand receiving the accolade of Top Express Operation at the UK Coach Awards (2015, 2016, 2017). Further upgrades included the only Plaxton Panther LEs built so far. including 54517 (YX18LLC) seen here.

In March 2008, it was announced that Stagecoach Fife had bought Rennies of Dunfermline for an undisclosed sum. The Rennies fleet was 60 vehicles, and included 18 double-deckers which were all leased from Stagecoach in Fife. Rennies were formally based at Dunfermline (Wellwood Mill), before moving to Cowdenbeath in 2016. Rennies has become Stagecoach East Scotland’s coach hire business and the company also provides coaches for Scottish Citylink and Megabus,

In Spring 2013 Stagecoach ventured across the Forth and into the South Queensferry area. Unfortunately the company found the routes challenging and by June 2017 the company withdraw from that area, with Lothian Buses taking over.

After the acquisition of Strathtay, it meant that Stagecoach was operating three companies that bordered each other. These were Strathtay Buses (Dundee and Tayside), Stagecoach Scotland (Perth and Perthshire) and Stagecoach in Fife. So in a tidying up measure, all three companies were merged into one enlarged company, which was actually the Fife Scottish licence enlarged. This made it one of the largest Stagecoach companies, with depots at Aberhill, Arbroath (with an outstation at Forfar), Blairgowrie, Cowdenbeath (where Rennies is based) Dunfermline, Glenrothes, Leven, Perth, (with an outstation at Spittalfield) and St Andrews.

+++ DISCLAIMER +++

Nothing you see here is real, even though the conversion or the presented background story might be based historical facts. BEWARE!

The Fiat Macchi C.170 Brezza ("Gust of wind") was a single-seat biplane fighter which served primarily in Italy's Regia Aeronautica before and in the early stages of World War II. The aircraft was produced by the Varese firm, and entered service, in smaller numbers, with the air forces of Italy, Austria and Hungary.

In spite of the biplane configuration, the C.170 was a modern, 'sleek-looking' design based around a strong steel and alloy frame incorporating a NACA cowling housing the radial engine, with fairings for the fixed main landing gear. The C.170's upper wing was slightly larger than its lower wing, carried only by six struts and a few bracing wires. Only the upper wing featured ailerons while the lower wing carried large flaps. Although it looked slightly outdated, the aircraft proved exceptionally agile thanks to its very low wing loading and a powerful, responsive engine.

Power was provided by a 650 kW (870 hp) Fiat A.74 14 cylinder radial engine, which also drove the contemporary Fiat CR.32 fighter. With the "direttiva" (Air Ministry Specific) of 1932, Italian industrial leaders had been instructed to concentrate solely on radial engines for fighters, due to their better reliability. The A.74 was actually a re-design of the American Pratt & Whitney R-1830 SC-4 Twin Wasp made by engineers Tranquillo Zerbi and Antonio Fessia, and in the C.170 it was geared to drive a metal three-blade Fiat-Hamilton Standard 3D.41-1 propeller of 2.9 m (9.5 ft) diameter. This allowed an impressive top speed of 441 km/h (272 mph) at 6.500 m (20.000 ft), and 342 km/h (213 mph) at ground level.

The first C.170 prototype flew on 24 December 1934 in Lonate Pozzolo, Varese, with Macchi Chief Test Pilot Giuseppe Burei at the controls. It was followed by the second prototype early the next year, which flew with an armored headrest and fairing in place (the C.170 lacked any further armor!) and other minor changes that were incorporated for serial production.

Despite Macchi’s proposal for a closed cockpit canopy the cockpit remained open – Italian pilots were rather conservative. Additional protection was introduced through armored side panels, though, which would protect the pilot’s shoulders. Radio equipment was also not included, as in many other Italian fighter aircraft.

During evaluation in early 1935 the C.170 was tested against the Fiat CR.42 and the Caproni Ca.165 biplane fighters, and was judged to be on par with the CR.42, although the Ca.165 was a more modern design which boasted a higher speed at the cost of maneuverability. An initial order of 99 C.170 for Italy's Regia Aeronautica was placed to Macchi factory in summer 1935, followed by foreign interest and order options from Austria, Belgium and Spain.

Anyway, what looked like a prosperous design was soon rendered obsolete: Following the end of Italy's campaigns in East Africa, a program was started to completely re-equip the Regia Aeronautica with a new interceptor aircraft of modern design. The 10 February 1936 specifications called for an aircraft powered by a single radial engine, with a top speed of 500 km/h, climb rate at 6,000 meters of 5 minutes, with a flight endurance of two hours, and armed with a single (later increased to two) 12.7 mm (0.5 in) machine gun. That was more or less the premature end for the C.170, as Macchi and other manufacturers quickly turned to more modern monoplane designs.

Therefore, orders and production of the Macchi Brezza remained limited. Beyond the original 99 aircraft for the Regia Aeronautica only 24 further C.170s were delivered. These aircraft went in spring 1936 to Austria to equip Jagdgeschwader II at Wiener Neustadt. Immediately after their delivery the Brezza fighters were retro-fitted with radio equipment, recognizable through the antenna installation on the headrest fairing. The potential orders from Belgium and Spain were soon cancelled, due to political tensions.

As a side note, the Austrian C.170s fighters were the first aircraft to sport the new national emblem, which had been the result of a competition and won by flight engineer Rosner from the Graz-Thalerhof base. The white, equilateral triangle with the point facing downwards in a red disc was a completely new design and had (other than the flag or coats of arms) no prior basis.

The C.170s' career in Austrian service was short, though: in March 1938 the Austrian units were absorbed into the Luftwaffe, and after a brief period the aircraft were handed over to Hungary where they were used for training purposes.

Although an obsolete design, it proved to be robust, durable and effective especially in severe conditions. In spring 1943, surviving C.170s were rounded up from training schools and delivered to night ground attack units operating on the Eastern Front. The C.170 was used to conduct night harassment sorties on the Eastern Front until September 1944, when the units were disbanded, due to a lack of serviceable airframes and spare parts.

The kit and its assembly

Inspiration for this little, whiffy biplane came when I posted a pic of an Austrian Ju 86 bomber as a reply/ suggestion to a fellow modeler's (NARSES2) search at whatifmodelers.com for “something” to make from a Gloster Gladiator.

When I looked at the paint scheme a second time I remembered that I still had some Austrian roundels in stock, as well some very old biplane spare parts... hmmm.

Biplanes are tricky to build, even OOB, and kitbashing this kind of whif would not make things easier. Anyway, I love such challenges, and the potential outcome would surely look nice, if not exotic, so I decided to tackle the project.

Basically, the following donation ingredients went into it:

● Fuselage, engine, cockpit/pilot and tail from a Revell Macchi C.200 "Saetta"

● Upper wing from a Matchbox Gloster "Gladiator"

● Lower wings from a Matchbox SBC "Helldiver"

● Wheels from a Matchbox Hs 126 (shortened)

Pretty straightforward, but even though it would be a small aircraft model, it would come with two big challenges: mounting the lower wings and shaping the resulting, gaping belly, and the custom-made struts and wirings for the upper wing.

Work started with the Macchi C.200’s fuselage, which was built OOB - just without the wing, which is a single part, different pilot (the included one is a pygmy!) and with a free spinning metal axis for the propeller.

The wing installation started with the lower wings. I glued the Helldiver wings onto the C.200 fuselage, so that the wings' trailing edge would match the C.200's wing root ends. From that, a floor plate was fitted under the fuselage and any excessive material removed, the gaps filled with lumps of 2C putty. That moved the lower wing's roots backwards, creating space at the lower forward fuselage for the new landing gear.

The latter was taken from a vintage Matchbox Hs 126 reconnaissance aircraft - probably 25, if 30 years old... Size was O.K., but the struts had to shortened by about 5mm, as thge HS 126 is a much bigger/longer aircraft than the C.200. A cut was made just above the wheel spats, material taken out, and the separate parts were glued back together again.

With the lower wings in place I started building strut supports for the upper wing from styrene strips - tricky and needs patience, but effective. I started with the outer supports, carving something SBC-style from styrene. These were glued into place, slightly canted outwards, and their length/height adapted to the upper wing’s position.

When this was settled, the upper Gladiator wing was glued into place. After a thorough drying period the short fuselage supports in front of the cockpit – again, styrene strips – were inserted into the gap. This allowed an individual lengthening, and was easier than expected, with a stable result.

After having the upper wing glued in place I added some wiring, made from heated and pulled-out styrene sprues. This not only enhances the kit's look, it also (just like in real life) improves rigidity of the model. Also a tedious task, but IMHO worth the effort. I tried thin wire, nylon strings and sewing yarn for this job, but finally the styrene solution is what worked best for me.

The exhaust installation had also to be modified: the new Hs 126 struts with spats would have been where the original C.200’s hot exhaust gases would have gone, so I added new exhaust pipes that would go between the new legs.

Other small added details included, among others, a pitot on a wing strut, a visor in front of the cockpit, a radio antenna, a ladder made from wire.

Painting and markings:

I would not call the Austrian 3+1-tone pre-WWII-scheme spectacular, but the colors are unique. My scheme is based on an Austrian Ju 86 bomber from 1938, so it fits into the intended time frame.

The colors were puzzled together from various sources and are subjective guesstimates:

● A pale, yellow-ish beige (Humbrol 74, ‘Linen’, out of production)

● A rather brownish green (Testors 1711, ‘Olive Drab’, FS 34087)

● A dark green with a yellow-ish hue (Humbrol 116, ‘US Dark Green’ FS 34079)

● Light blue for the undersides (Humbrol 65, ‘Aircraft Blue’, RLM 65)

In order to add some details I painted the area behind the engine cowling in aluminum. The respective part under the fuselage, where the exhaust gases would pass, was painted in Steel – both Testors Metallizers.

The interior surfaces were painted in a neutral Grey – but with the engine and the pilot in place you cannot see anything of that at all.

Markings are minimal: the Austrian roundels come from a TL Decals aftermarket sheet, the flag on the rudder was laid out with red paint (a mix of Humbrol 19 and 60), the white bar is a decal. The tactical code is fictional, puzzled together from single digits in various sizes (also from TL Modellbau sheets). The original documents how purely black fuselage codes, but I found these hard to read. So I chose digits with a white rim (actually, these belong to modern German Luftwaffe tactical codes in 1:32), which improve contrast a little.

The kit received a thin black ink wash and some shading/dry-painting with lighter basic tones (Humbrol 103, 155, Model Master 2138,‘Israeli Armor Sand Grey’, and Humbrol 122). After decal application, another turn with overall Hemp and Light Grey was done in order to fade contrast and to emphasize the surface structure. The wires were also painted, but only with thinned black ink and a VERY soft brush.

Finally, everything was sealed under a spray coat of matt acrylic varnish.

Voilà, and done in just about a week!

Walt Lafty and Nick Perri Performing at Brooklyn Bowl in Philadelphia PA on December 18th 2021.

This is the second show i've shot in two days with the Nikon Z9. The show the day before this had almost ZERO front like, which made things a lot more difficult.

Brooklyn Bowl in Philly on the other hand has an AMAZING lighting rig and people who know what they're doing to run it, which makes for better photos.

Now that i've gotten to shoot in terrible light and better light, how did the camera handle? The Auto Focus still is more jumpy then the Canon's and Sony's. What I mean by that is, it's easily distracted by other moving things in the frame. For example, it should stay locked on the face or eye of the guitar player and not be thrown off by the guitar itself.

With Sony and Canon it's much harder to get the systems to miss the eye or face when you have face and eye detect on. Those stay sticky unless you force it to focus somewhere else.

The colors are great, the files handle well at higher ISO, the cameras super responsive. The quickest of all the flagships when it comes to turning on and turning off. It's instant. Canon takes a little bit to turn off...aka power down...then power back up. And the same is true for the canon.

Banding is not an issue so far. Yes you may see some banding from the LED lights in a few images, but there's really nothing you can do about that regardless of the system. So, it's really a non issue for me so far.

The lenses are still where the system falls short for me. I still don't feel as if they are able to focus as quick as the Pro canon and Sony glass. The glass is nice, but the 1.8's are just much slower, in terms of focus speed then the Pro glass from the Sony and Canon.

Now before you say, but Jared, Canon doesn't have a line of 1.8's...yes, you would be correct. They have a line of 1.2's. 85 and 50. Speaking of the 50, Nikon's 50 1.2 is nice, but still not as fast focusing as it's counterparts.

I still have trouble knowing when i'm actually shooting photos. You could snap of 20 and not even know you were taking photos. Yes there's some modes like adding a black frame after you take a shot, but that kind of defeats the purpose of the "blackout free" viewfinder.

All and all, so far so good, I am enjoying shooting the system. I wish the glass was faster, I wish the focus was stickier, but again, this camera is a million times better then any of the prior Nikon mirrorless options.

I will continue to use this camera in the Real World and share my thoughts along the way.

While it’s true that images, grids, and scaled size are extremely important when it comes to responsive website design, the typography – font styles, line length, size, spacing, etc – make a lot of difference too.

Typography For Responsive Website Designs

Color becomes landscape at Lightscape, where familiar ground in Golden Gate Park is temporarily rewritten by light, reflection, and shadow. Trees glow from within, their forms traced in saturated blues, violets, and magentas. Along the water, illuminated lotus-like sculptures float in quiet formation, mirrored perfectly on the surface below, turning the pond into a second sky. Elsewhere, fields of small lights spread across the grass in precise, rhythmic patterns, inviting slow movement and careful looking.

The experience rewards patience. Paths curve gently through darkness, then open into moments of surprise—branches outlined in neon hues, fog catching beams of light, and distant plantings revealed in layers rather than all at once. Human presence remains secondary here, mostly suggested by silhouettes and soft motion, reinforcing the sense that the garden itself is the main performer.

These photographs focus on that balance between spectacle and stillness. Lightscape is theatrical, but never loud; immersive, but never overwhelming. The installations feel responsive to the park’s existing contours, using color and illumination to emphasize texture, scale, and depth rather than masking them. What emerges is a temporary nighttime ecology, where art and landscape collaborate instead of competing.

Seen together, these images document a fleeting transformation—an annual moment when Golden Gate Park shifts from daylight refuge to nocturnal dreamscape, reminding visitors how dramatically perception can change once the sun goes down.

Driving Change: Gender-Responsive Practices in Business

Driving Change: Gender-Responsive Practices in Business brought together distinguished figures from business, politics and leading research institutes. The panellists discussed the growing need for companies to innovate and embrace diversity within their organisation and their customer base in order to remain competitive in times of economic turbulence, both at home and internationally.

Award Ceremony -

Since 2005, the discussion panel has been followed by a Women in Business awards ceremony. The 2015 awards were presented to three winners from the EBRD region who have proved to be the most advanced in applying gender diversity measures in their businesses.

This year the discussion panel and awards ceremony was complemented by a signing ceremony for the EBRD’s Women in Business programme in the Eastern Partnership countries. Local financial institutions signed letters expressing their interest in participating in the programme, which combines finance and advice for women-led small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The programme will be launched in Georgia in 2015 as part of a regional drive that will benefit more than 2,000 women entrepreneurs.
