Several operators are currently experimenting with demand responsive services which sit somewhere between 'normal' scheduled bus routes and taxis. The Oxford Bus Company launched Pick Me Up in 2018 originally using 6 all Mercedes-Benz Sprinters although 10 are currently in use offering demand responsive journey's via an App across Eastern Oxford.

RF68FLX (978) is one of two EVM Cityline converted Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 516CDI's bought in late 2018 to cope with increased demand and is seen here passing down a busy St Aldate's in Oxford city centre. However, whether such services remain a viable long term proposition remains to be seen.

Architects; GLC Architects Department, 1967.

This Iconic Brutalist building on South Bank hardly needs any introductions. Younger cousin of Royal Festival Hall was a bit of a ‘tearaway punk’ 0f 60s, always liked by architects but has taken considerable time and numerous skateboarders and graffiti to endear itself to Londoners at large and of course the tourists. A fact which may also strangle it due to the over ambitious development plans currently being considered for enlarging and enhancing the facilities for attracting yet more tourists and to ‘milk the cow’ to its limit.

The bold and distinct exteriors are for all to see but the foyer serving Queen Elizabeth Hall and Purcell Room is a hidden gem of 60s design and deserves a detailed look to fully appreciate its pincer like tapered grip layout, while its subtle responsive widths, context with the river, pedestrian deck, car park below and the big hug it offers to QE Hall deserves credit which is long overdue.

Most of the major performance buildings of international repute set the scene by attaching elaborate foyers designed like ‘cat-walks’ for seeing and for being-seen for the audience. Here this honour has been reserved for Festival Hall, no more than few yards away. This is appropriate since these concert halls are intended to contrast with smooth modernity and generosity of modern style and scale of Festival Hall, while the issues of aesthetic morality and means of expressing functions and materials are at stake here.

My composite photo above shows the empty foyer in the top row waiting for the original furnishings to arrive. Very few materials are on display, white marble on floor and walls, windows and doors in sand cast aluminium, structure in board marked concrete. Truncated pyramids formed with perforated metal planks with sound absorbing properties on the ceilings also house light fittings.

The middle row shows multi-purpose details, moveable black leather circular seats floating on Perspex base and table top in the middle, sand filled gaps around columns used as ashtrays and avoiding skirtings.

These fittings apparently were never approved or liked by the management and were thrown out at the first available opportunity.

The first photograph in bottom row shows a canteen like layout as see in mid 70s and the last two photos are taken by me recently and show the multi-purpose community use, admirable but miles away from the original intentions and concepts.

In praise of the building, it takes everything in its stride and it can be easily made to revert back to the original concepts or accept sensible changes without too much difficulty.

Big fan of Pinterest? You’ve got to love this new theme we have to offer – Pinboard. It features an auto stacking layout with infinite scroll as seen on the Pinterest desktop site. If you are unfamilar with the term “infinite scroll”, it means that new posts are loaded automatically when you hit to the bottom of the page. The stacking layout works perfectly and responsively on any resolution using a desktop or mobile devices such as iPad, iPhone, Blackberry, and Android.

Demand-responsive services operated in Hampshire under the Cango brand are contracted out but use vehicles owned by the County Council (though when tenders are let, prospective operators may submit variant bids to use their own). Optare Solo YJ05XMR, seen here leaving Lymington Bus Station on the 1610 to New Milton via Sway on 21 April 2011, is numbered 53076 in the fleet of First Hampshire & Dorset but was originally Wilts & Dorset 2101. The "XMR" in the registration number is coincidental but would look perfect on a W&D vehicle, recalling as it does the Wiltshire registrations of old!

With all the talk of Responsive design I thought I would make this little overview for myself so it was easier to get an overview of what space is available for each platform.

IPhone 4 screen resolution is 960x640 but I chose not to include it as it is not as widely spread as the other IPhones.

IPad 3 supposedly uses a resolution twice the size of the previous IPads but this is not confirmed.

I have not mentioned Android as the screen resolutions for this type of device varies a lot (try Googling it).
