Dundalk overwhelm Bangor in All Ireland Final

by Roger Corbett

Bangor’s amazing run in the All Ireland Junior Cup came to an abrupt end when they were comprehensively beaten by Dundalk, eventually losing by 55-5.

Where do you start when trying to relate and absorb the events of Saturday’s final at Chambers Park? Firstly, congratulations to worthy winners Dundalk who nullified the Bangor attack, then went on to produce some stunning plays which racked up no less than 8 tries, each by a different player. For Bangor’s part, they were unable to respond to the intensity of Dundalk’s game, and lacked the cutting edge which their opponents used to great effect.

The day started full of promise, as the strong support from North Down made their way to Chambers Park in Portadown, knowing Bangor would be fielding their best team. Once again, the pundits had Bangor as the underdogs – just as they had done so in the previous three rounds! In confounding the experts earlier, Bangor produced some awesome performances against top quality opposition to get to the final. Dundalk had produced some convincing wins in the early rounds of the competition, but had struggled to get past CIYMS in the semi-final, just managing to squeeze ahead at the second time of asking. However, with a number of key players returning to the side in time for this game, they were now back at full strength and would be a formidable force to contend with.

Having won the toss, captain Jamie Clegg elected to play into the stiff wind in the first half. For the first 5 minutes, Bangor doggedly retained possession and tried to play their way into Dundalk’s half through a series of determined forward moves. However, little ground was made and, when possession was finally lost, the Dundalk back line produced a burst that simply cut through the Bangor defence resulting in an easy touch down under Bangor’s posts for a 7-0 lead.

Bangor stuck to their plan and slowly, but patiently, got their attack moving forward, eventually winning a penalty to the left of Dundalk’s posts, but Mark Widdowson’s kick into the wind drifted just wide of the mark.

The contrast in play between the two teams was becoming clear, with Bangor trying to keep the ball close while Dundalk were throwing it wide. The latter strategy was proving to be the more effective as, with 20 minutes gone, a quick back line move with players looping around resulted in an overlap on the right wing which gave a clear run in to again, score under the posts. A further 9 minutes later, they did it again and, although the Bangor defence had sensed the danger and moved across to cover it, their tackling let them down allowing Dundalk to get over in the right hand corner, taking their lead to 19-0.

By now, Bangor were trying to hang on until half time when they could regroup and come out with the wind at their backs. Dundalk, on the other hand were anxious to press home their advantage and give them a more comfortable lead. To Bangor’s credit, although camped on their own line for lengthy spells, they dug in and managed to hold on until the referee’s half time whistle.

As the teams reappeared from the dressing rooms, it was obvious Bangor were ringing the changes, particularly in the backs. With the wind advantage having lessened considerably, Bangor got the second half underway. It was now Dundalk’s turn to adopt the slow, steady approach, just as Bangor had done earlier. However, their more confident off-loading and support play was, once again, taking play deep into Bangor’s territory. Frustration at not being able to gain possession and take play out of their danger area eventually resulted in a yellow card for Clegg after a succession of penalties. Dundalk kicked the penalty to touch, won their lineout and drove for the line. Although initially held up by the Bangor defence, Dundalk’s repeated drives were eventually rewarded with another converted score, extending their lead to 26-0.

From the touchline, the Bangor faithful had felt that if their players had managed to score first in the second half, they may have been able to mount a fight-back and close the gap to their opponents. As it was, this Dundalk score simply bolstered their confidence and pushed Bangor deeper into trouble. With Bangor still a man down, Dundalk added to the score with a penalty and then another score in the corner. Everything was now working for the Leinster men, as even the difficult touchline conversion into the biting wind successfully split the posts, bringing the score to 36-0.

As the game entered the final quarter, and with Dundalk all but holding the cup, Bangor were now on the ropes. By contrast, the Dundalk players were in almost total control, and were not going to slow down now. In a 10 minute spell, they ran in a further 3 tries, making the scoreline 55-0. By now, any sense of dejection the Bangor supporters may have been feeling was now moved to feelings of sympathy for their players. However, pride was at stake and once again Bangor rallied as the game entered its final minutes. At last, the forwards got within striking distance of the Dundalk line and, although their repeated attacks were repelled, they finally managed to do what their opponents had done so effectively, and quickly passed the ball wide to Davy Charles. Even though they were 55 points ahead, the Dundalk defence made Charles work hard to drive through the tackles and score Bangor’s consolation try, bringing the final score to 55-5.

From Bangor’s point of view, the final score doesn’t tell the whole story of this competition. While the final may have resulted in a sad anti-climax for Bangor, the remarkable journey to get there will be remembered for some time. On the day, Dundalk were by far the better side, and Bangor would have to concede that their game was not up to the usual standard. However, there is no doubt the experience of competing at this level is something to relish and the goal now will be to secure a top four place in the league and try again next year.

Everybody at the club has nothing but the highest respect and praise for what has been achieved this year by not just the 1sts, but all the senior teams, and one poor result isn’t going to change that – the welcome at Upritchard Park for the returning players is testament to that. With that in mind, the players now need to put this disappointment behind them and provide the best possible response against a struggling Portadown side at home in the league next Saturday.

Bangor Scorers: David Charles 1 try.

In front of a big crowd at Chambers Park on Saturday afternoon Dundalk delivered a stunning and ruthless display to see off the challenge of Bangor and capture the All Ireland Junior Cup title for the very first time.

Three first half tries had them firmly in control at 19-0 ahead having played with the elements at the Portadown venue during the first half and while the wind dropped somewhat after half time the Dundalk intensity most certainly didn’t as they cut loose scoring five more tries.

Dundalk returned to a heroes welcome at their Mill Road clubhouse on Saturday night after a display of pure brilliance throughout the afternoon.

Precision, pace and skill from the Louth men from start to finish left Bangor playing second fiddle for long periods.

Rapid Responder Unit

Circa 2007

This was the Ambulance Command's first endeavour, and as is typical, they made due with what they had, ergo the somewhat 'plain Jane' car. Not surprisingly, this was an initiative from the frontline Officers and Paramedics, fraught with a great deal of political nonsense and pushback from their parent agency and political masters.

The programme proved a success and subsequent units were considerably better kitted up.

Interestingly (and humbling) was that despite the fact that Hong Kong was modelling their Ambulance Service after British Columbia's, they had had medics on motorcycles for many years, and had the unit above easily six or seven years before BCAS got to it.

SHADOW HILLS - The Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a Major Emergency Structure Fire early Wednesday morning, where a large blaze involved a commercial building and several vehicles.

One-hundred eleven LAFD Firefighters responded to the 10900 block of West Randall Street beginning at 2:31 AM on Wednesday, November 30, 2022, where a large commercial building showed flames shooting through the roof. The fire consumed multiple nearby vehicles, vegetation and debris, and threatened several buildings. Firefighters established heavy streams from the exterior of the building (defensive operations), including aerial ladder pipes. Firefighters flowed copious amounts of water to quench the intense heat fueled by a heavy load of combustibles inside the structure, labeled as a party rental warehouse.

The building sustained heavy damage under hours of intense heat exposure, making it dangerous for firefighters to make entry, which eventually led the roof to collapse. LAFD's robotic firefighting unit, Thermite RS3, was dispatched to make entry by remote control to allow more penetrative hose stream access without unnecessarily putting firefighters at risk. After many hours of consistent suppression efforts under the command of Assistant Chief Guy Tomlinson, firefighters have controlled the flames (although an official "Knockdown" was not called due to smoldering hot spots beneath the rubble, which firefighters will continue to pursue). The long and persistent efforts of the firefighters on scene spared all neighboring businesses from becoming involved, protecting them from damage.

There were no reported injuries. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

VPD responded to block traffic and FortisBC were also onscene. At 3:54PM on October 20, 2024 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to the 11100 block of W Vanowen Street in North Hollywood for a reported structure fire. Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy fire in a storage yard, exposing a commercial building.

The building, doing business as a prop building company, was placarded with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 704, Standard - often referred to as "NFPA hazard diamond". The placards provide emergency responders with critical information, at a quick glance, about the contents of structure/container. The building showed a "2" in the blue, "3" in red, "4" in yellow and "OXY" in the white, which could add significant complexity to an incident were the fire to extend into the structure.

Firefighters cut gates for access and maneuvered fire apparatus through the grounds to reach the fire. They immediately deployed heavy streams, using portable monitors and handlines to get copious amounts of water flowing.

The large yard was filled with unknown stored goods which created a very dark smoke and colored water run-off. Due to the potential for a hazardous materials component, the Incident Commander requested the LAFD Hazardous Materials Squad. These HazMat Squads are staffed with firefighters who achieve specialty certification in hazard identification, technical advising, entry into hazardous atmospheres, specialized mitigation and technical decontamination.

While crews continued to battle the fire, the HazMat Squad confirmed the run off was from ordinary combustibles and nothing posing a hazardous threat.

56 minutes into the incident, the 50+ firefighters on scene, including Engine 13 from Burbank Fire, operating under the command of Assistant Chief William Peralta, achieved a knockdown of the fire with no injuries reported. The quick and aggressive actions of the firefighter prevented the fire from extending to the building, averting a potentially far more serious situation.

In order to ensure the fire was fully extinguished, the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority foam tender, stationed at the Hollywood Burbank Airport just next to the incident, responded to a mutual aid request. They supplied LAFD engines with plentiful foam to more effectively address any remaining hot spots.

As crews completed their work, all firefighters underwent a decontamination operation to wash their protective gear of any remaining contaminants.

Responding to community requests and as part of its rural coverage project, Vodacom installed a portable, solar-powered mobile phone mast in the remote mining community of Numbi in the Democratic Republic of Congo during April 2015.

The 18 metre high tower and more than 2,500 kg of equipment - including four batteries weighting 50kg each and six solar panels - had to be transported by hand across 27 km of steep, muddy terrain from Kalunga to Numbi, high in the mountains of South Kivu.

Upon arrival, a team of Vodacom technicians installed the 18 metre tower in front of a stunned crowd of townsfolk. Once the tower is erected and switched on, people rush to enjoy their newly-installed connection – delivering vital health and security communications to the local community.

Maj. Gen. David R. Hogg responds to a reporter's question during a press conference in Algiers, Algeria, Dec. 6, 2010.

U.S. Army photo

U.S. Army Africa’s commanding general met with Algerian military and government leaders in Algiers Dec. 5-7.

Maj. Gen. David R. Hogg discussed bilateral relations and regional issues, toured the Algerian Central Military Museum and met with reporters for a free-ranging press conference before returning to USARAF headquarters in Vicenza, Italy.

Accompanied by U.S. Ambassador to Algiers, the Hon. David Pearce, and members of the American country team, Hogg met with Maj. Gen. Ahcene Tafer, land forces commander of the People’s National Army (ANP); Mohamed Kamel Rezag Bara, presidential adviser on counterterrorism; Maj. Gen. Ahmed Senhadji, secretary general of the Ministry of Defense; and Brig. Gen. Rachid Saoudi, commander of ANP special forces; said Lt. Col. Philip Archer, U.S. Army Africa’s North African regional desk officer.

Hogg took the opportunity to clarify USARAF’s missions and dispel erroneous perceptions during a press conference Dec. 6 with Algerian and international media.

“This is my first trip to Algeria, and I’m here to meet with the leadership of the land forces and to develop a relationship, and to discuss some of the future training opportunities that both of our nations can do together,” Hogg said.

He mentioned upcoming joint Algerian-American reconnaissance and counter-IED training possibilities, and a future visit by Algerian soldiers to the United States to investigate how the Army integrates its lessons learned center into its training regime.

“A lot of mutual discussions and a lot of mutual benefits this year,” he said.

Hogg went into some detail to explain what U.S. Army Africa is, its place in the overall U.S. military, and the context of its operations in Africa.

“Let me explain a little bit about what U.S. Army Africa does. It’s one of these headquarters that a lot of people don’t know anything about, to include some of the people I talk to in the U.S. military,” he said.

Hogg clarified that USARAF is an Army component command with its headquarters in Vicenza, Italy, and is the land forces component of U.S. Africa Command, led by Gen. William E. “Kip” Ward, which is headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany.

“It is strictly a headquarters. That means I have a staff and personnel that do headquarters-type business. I have no assigned forces, which means I do not have combat forces assigned to my headquarters,” Hogg said.

“Our primary mission here on the continent of Africa is what we refer to as theater security cooperation. In other words, we come at the request and the permission of the sovereign countries here in Africa to train, to work with, to cooperate on a variety of areas — from just basic command-post exercises to doing humanitarian- and disaster relief-type events — the whole realm.

“But we come only if a nation says, ‘Hey, we’d like to do some work with you, we’d like to partner with the U.S. Army forces.’

“And the other piece that’s very important is that we are in support of the embassies. So we do not do anything on our own, unilaterally. We work with the countries and we work with the embassy, and that’s really what our mission set is.”

Hogg responded in the negative when asked whether USARAF had established or was in the process of establishing bases in Algeria or the region.

“I think the question you’re trying to ask is: Do we have any bases here in Algeria? And the answer is: No, we don’t have any bases here,” he said

Hogg responded as well to a number of questions regarding security and counterterrorism activity in the Sahel region.

“As you know, this is a regional issue, where Algerian land forces have taken a leadership role, and it’s very impressive, the progress that’s been made,” he said.

He described the current status of counter-terrorism in the Sahel as a work in progress. “And with the leadership of the Algerian land forces and the work that they’re doing down there for coordination, there’s progress being made,” Hogg said.

He was asked about whether counter-terrorism training is part of the Algerian-American land forces relationship.

“Our support and assistance is based on request from sovereign countries, and it’s really in a training piece, so that kind of flows into your counter-terrorism training,” he said.

The general was asked whether USARAF, or AFRICOM, is planning to establish a headquarters on the African continent proper, and took the opportunity to dispel that lingering notion.

“There is no decision, no desire to move the AFRICOM headquarters. I mean, Gen. Ward’s been pretty clear on that: He wants to get beyond that and just get into the mission. As far as my headquarters goes — Vicenza, Italy: that’s where we’re at, that’s where we’re going to stay.

“Which means we do a lot of travel to make the mission happen — but that’s OK.

“So there are no plans now, in the future or in the past to move AFRICOM into the continent . . . and that’s really where we’re at at this stage. We’re more interested in getting on with our mission of cooperation and helping with security and stability on the continent.

“The bottom line is: continued engagement and agreement as far as some of the future activities that are planned, and the potential for future exercises here in Algeria. And so it’s very productive and very enjoyable. I’ve enjoyed it and I’m looking forward to coming back.”

Hogg returned to Vicenza Dec. 7. The visit strengthened the overall relationship between the Algerian and American land forces, said Archer.

“They value the growing partnership with the U.S. military. They are a very modern military and we have much to learn from them,” he said.
